GP: What makes Chopin's music so unmistakably Polish?
EA: First of all, is his use of Polish dances. Even in the "Second Concerto" there is a mazurka in the third movement. He was the first serious Polish composer to use successfully the dance element in his writing. But beyond this, there is in his music a quality Poles call "zal." It is sort of like "soul," but is actually more a combination of melancholy, sadness, and even pity. It's [a] difficult word to translate, but a lot of people feel it sums up inherent characteristics of the Polish people. Certainly, Chopin believed this.
GP: Isn't "personal" a keyword with Chopin?
EA: Oh, yes. In that sense, he was probably the first and most original of the Romantics. In his music, he always dealt with the individual rather than the universal. The depth of his expression, however, is so great [that] it becomes universal and touches something in all of us. But basically it is about himself.
GP: But aren't there those who see Chopin more as a classicist than a Romantic?

Richard Stoltzman/Emanuel Ax:
Crystalline Landscape in a Cavern Bass Concert Hall, April 15 Hearing clarinetist Richard Stoltzman and pianist Emanuel Ax at Bass Concert Hall is like watching chess at Memorial Stadium. This is no place for chamber music; especially as played by Stoltzman, who is master of the intimate nature of his instrument. Ax invited the audience to move closer to the stage, but the space left the musicians and the audience at a disappointing disadvantage. Rather than forsaking tone to fill the space, Stoltzman took a whispery approach to Robert Schumann's Fantasy Pieces . His timbre is reminiscent of shakuhachi playing deftly shaded colors and long gently flowing lines. It's hard to hear the point of articulation where each pitch in a melody begins and ends. The degree of difficulty was upped by his slower than usual tempos. But the sense of ensemble was not up to this pair's standards although some of that may have been due to the less-than-optimal setting. Too often, phrasing and dynamics headed off into different directions. Like Benny Goodman, Stoltzman straddles the classical, contemporary, and jazz repertoires. All three were represented in the tuneful

The second movement, Manny's Gym , is gentle jazz, with a paraphrase of a Satie in the middle. It gave Ax lots of opportunities to show off his singing tone. In the bebop Hail Bop third movement, too, you can swing along (and the principal viola and trumpeters definitely did so), but you can't quite find the beat. At one point, the xylophone, trumpets and upper register of the piano really let loose. Rattle, Ax and Adams took many bows together. The second half of the concert, in which the orchestra was joined by the Rundfunkchor Berlin, consisted of Maurice Ravel's

Pianist Emanuel Ax closed the Carmel Music Society’s 2002-2003 concert season last night with a highly successful concert at the Pacific Grove Middle School. It was gratifying indeed to see a sold out house for a classical concert on the Monterey Peninsula, where jazz events outnumber classical concerts to an extraordinary degree. Mr. Ax last appeared locally under the auspices of the Carmel Music Society in a sonata recital with Yo Yo Ma at Sunset Center, an event that occurred over ten years ago. This was simply one of the best concerts ever heard on the Monterey Peninsula, and it certainly demonstrated beyond any doubt that Mr. Ax is a highly skilled and artistic collaborative artist as well as a distinguished recitalist and concerto soloist. Known affectionately to his friends as “Manny,” Mr. Ax was an affable, and self effacing host last night as he walked out on stage to perform an interesting program consisting of two sets of Beethoven variations, Leonard Bernstein’s “Touches,” and a selection of works by Chopin to end the program.

Emanuel Ax, Piano EMANUEL AX, Piano Emanuel Ax is renowned not only for his poetic temperament and unsurpassed virtuosity, but also for the exceptional breadth of his performing activity. Each season his distinguished career includes appearances with major symphony orchestras worldwide, recitals in the most celebrated concert halls, a variety of chamber music collaborations, the commissioning and performance of new music, and additions to his acclaimed discography on Sony Classical. Throughout the 2003-04 season at Carnegie Hall, Mr. Ax will focus on the music of Debussy. This season-long "Perspectives" series features Mr. Ax in performances with the Boston Symphony under Bernard Haitink, with the Juilliard Orchestra under Charles Dutoit, in three chamber music concerts at Zankel Hall, and in a solo piano recital. These programs also feature world premieres of three Carnegie Hall commissions. In recent years Mr. Ax has turned his attention toward the music of 20th-century composers, performing works by such diverse figures as Sir Michael Tippett, Hans Werner Henze, Paul Hindemith, Ezra Laderman, Peter Lieberson, Joseph Schwantner, William Bolcom, André Previn and Aaron Copland. He gave the world premiere of John Adams’ "Century Rolls" with the Cleveland Orchestra in 1997, the European premiere with the Concertgebouw Orchestra in 1998, and the New York premiere with the Cleveland Orchestra at Carnegie Hall in 2000. Another concerto dedicated to him, Christopher Rouse’s "Seeing," was premiered in 1999 with Leonard Slatkin and the New York Philharmonic (its European debut was at the BBC Proms in 2001). In 2000 Mr. Ax joined the Boston Symphony for the first performances of Bright Sheng’s "Red Silk Dance," and in March 2003 he joined Yo-Yo Ma, David Zinman and the New York Philharmonic to premiere Mr. Sheng’s "Song and Dance of Tears." Mr. Ax premiered Krzysztof Penderecki’s "Resurrection" with the Philadelphia Orchestra in May 2002, and in May 2003 he premiered a concerto written for him by Melinda Wagner, "Extremity of Sky," with Daniel Barenboim and the Chicago Symphony.

Each season his distinguished career includes appearances with major symphony orchestras worldwide, recitals in the most celebrated concert halls, a variety of chamber music collaborations, the commissioning and performance of new music, and additions to his acclaimed discography on Sony Classical.
New music will figure prominently in another of Mr. Ax's notable undertakings during the 2001-2002 season: the world premiere of Krzysztof Penderecki's piano concerto with the Philadelphia Orchestra and its Music Director Wolfgang Sawallisch, which he will perform both in Carnegie Hall and in Philadelphia. Other highlights of his season include a duo recital tour with pianist Yefim Bronfman; the gala opening concert of Philadelphia's new Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, with Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman, and the Philadelphia Orchestra; and performances with the Israel Philharmonic, Munich Philharmonic, NHK Symphony in Tokyo, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Montreal Symphony, Pittsburgh Symphony, National Symphony and the Toronto Symphony.
Born in Lvov, Poland, Emanuel Ax moved to Winnipeg, Canada, with his family when he was a young boy. His studies in the Pre-College Division of Juilliard were greatly supported by the sponsorship of the Epstein Scholarship Program of the Boys Clubs of America, and he subsequently won the Young Concert Artists Award. His piano teacher was Mieczylaw Munz. Mr. Ax, a graduate of Columbia University where he majored in French, resides in New York City with his wife, pianist Yoko Nozaki, their son, Joseph, and their daughter, Sarah.

During the nineteenth century, before the age of electronically produced sound, there was a strong tradition of music-making in the home. The piano became something of a home entertainment center: every household had or aspired to have one, and this, together with the sheer sociability of making music together, resulted in a thriving market for piano duets. The two-piano duet has a smaller repertoire than the one-piano duet, since it was rare to find two instruments in a single room except in concert halls, colleges of music and the homes of professional musicians and composers. Musically speaking, however, two pianos offer the most varied opportunities, because each performer has the complete range of the keyboard at his disposal, and this makes possible an element of virtuosity inhibited by the comparatively cramped position of two players at one keyboard. Today's program comprises three monuments from the rarely heard duo-piano repertoire: Variations on a Theme of Haydn and the Sonata in F Minor Op. 34bis
