Selections from the Definitive Collection Philips 462699-2 ADD/DDD 2CDs 152 minutes th Century. The series is scheduled to be released in ten 2-CD sets each month over the next year. (December 1998 and July 1999 will be vacation months.) With two exceptions, each set will be devoted to a single pianist. Many pianists will be represented by two of these sets; some (Arrau, Gilels, Kempff, Richter, Brendel, Horowitz, and Rubinstein) will be represented by three. In all, 72 pianists will be included in this project, which is unprecedented in the history of recordings. Is this typical of the actual releases? Philips sent me a release sheet on the first ten. I hope to review at least some of these in greater detail, but I can give you an overview here. First up on the reviewing stand are Martha Argerich, Claudio Arrau, Wilhelm Backhaus, Alfred Brendel, Julius Katchen, Emil Gilels, Clara Haskil, Vladimir Horowitz, Wilhelm Kempff, and Stephen Kovacevich. The Argerich, Arrau, Backhaus, Gilels, and Haskil discs present them in one or more concertos. The solo pieces are, for the most part, substantial. For example, the Kovacevich discs consist solely of Beethoven sonatas, and the Backhaus set preserves the pianist's 1954 Carnegie Hall recital in its entirety. Overall, some of this material is new to CD; some of it hasn't even seen commercial release before. He was also fond of reminding his listeners that Beethoven, in his existential struggle, was a contemporary figure. For him, Beethoven stood for the "spirit of humanity victorious". "Beethoven's message of endless struggle concluding in the victory of renewal and spiritual rebirth, speaks to us and to young people today with a force that is particularly relevant to our times. In the sense that his life was an existential fight for survival, Beethoven is our contemporary. In the sense that he mastered both his life and his art to reach the ultimate heights of creation and transfiguration, he will last as long as the human spirit prevails upon the earth," he wrote in an essay to accompany his first series of Beethoven sonatas. Arrau was left grasping for words to describe the power of Beethoven to affect something very deep within the listener. The metaphysical, essentialist language may not be to contemporary taste but poetically such description is reaching, just as the music reaches, past what we know easily towards what we experience intuitively. Arrau's characteristic lush, rich, fully textured pianistic sound has a type of grandeur that befits such description. If Arrau does not evoke a trembling of the soul, then he most likely will evoke a deep visceral reaction of some other kind. This seems a given from the sheer sonic power of his deep rich chords. Perhaps more than any other pianist Arrau has a distinctive recognisable sound.

The Transcendental Etudes are no picnic to play on the piano. The virtuosity needed for the polyphonic music calls for rapid raise in octaves, daring leaps and dexterity, usually of the left hand. It's a great work out for an ambitious pianist. Emotional, dramatic and intense, the music of Liszt has never been greater than on this recording which was originally an LP in the 70's. On the cover is the artist himself, Franz List.

(larger image) price: Reviews Rating: 5 of 5 Summary: I Know I'll Go Back To It Often Comment : How come we have such a repertoire? Why these pieces and why in such an order? And why together with Solomon? The availability of the films is of course a major consideration. But then why in such an order? The quality of these films has a lot to do with such an order. The first one is the best, both in sound and in vision. The collaboration with the orchestra was wonderful, in rhythm and in musical effects, everything. With Arrau, it is a standard thing. His power to unify large scale structures and to cumulate paces for dramatic effects are amazing, and these are all on top of a most beautiful tone and perfect phrasing. Depiction of his hands comes only occasionally. What we have is somewhat like what you see when you attend a concert. But his interpretation is the very best one could ever hope foras perfect as perfection itself. Like very old and pure cogniac, it's always contained within an old bottle. The sound and visual qualities of the second piece is not so good as the first one. The speed of filming was not fast enough and when the tempo is fast, the vision of his hands, particularly his fingers is blurred and the higher notes are slightly distorted. But as far as music and interpretation is concerned, like the first piece, they are very instructive indeed. Here we have the subtleties of rhythmic flexibility and tone colouring of the highest degree.

Not everyone will agree with his Beethoven playing, and his playing in general, but many will be fascinated by his complex intellectuality. His Beethoven playing, particularly the sonatas, are some of his best and most interesting work. If anyone was to own one recording of Arraus playing, I would surely suggest a Beethoven recording. His interpretations of these three popular sonatas are unorthodox but are given very passionate and interesting performances. Anyone studying or interested in these sonatas should listen to Arrau, the Appassionata especially is given an excellent performance. This CD is highly recommended, its an excellent lesson in Arraus Beethoven playing.
