A native of Brazil, Monteiro received $10,000 and shared the concert stage with Argerich herself. In addition, he will play five public concerto and chamber music concerts throughout Argentina, as well as recital performances in Japan, as part of the 2004 Martha Argerich Festival. Monteiro competed with twenty-nine other candidates after an initial videotaped pre-selection process. Born in Argentina, Argerich is a well-known pianist who has collaborated for more than forty years with Conductor Charles Dutoit, former music director of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, in live performances and on recordings.

The music community is on pins and needles wondering whether the master pianist, a notorious perfectionist about her music, will find the acoustics at Taipei's Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall less than satisfactory. Responding to such fears, Hsu Po-yun of New Aspect Productions laments, "Such is Taiwan's fate when politicians do not care about culture. We suffer from a lack of world-class performance spaces. For years people in the cultural community have cried out for help, but the government has just turned a deaf ear to our pleas." This shortage of top-notch performance venues affects more than just classical music, and has kept numerous performers from working in Taiwan. Taiwan has no domed stadium to accommodate large rock concerts, and despite years of their best efforts, arts agencies have been unable to attract Broadway-style shows such as "Phantom of the Opera" and "Miss Saigon" to Taiwan due to deficient stage equipment. The severe lack of facilities puts added pressure on Taiwan's two finest performances spaces, Taipei's National Concert Hall and the National Theater, where staff members are so inundated with applications for limited performance space that they actually push the applications around in wheelbarrows. Invariably, this tragicomedy results in numerous scheduling controversies each year.

The honor is a precious one considering that only Japan has an Argerich festival and that the pre-eminent Argentine pianist cancelled her Israel concert in favor of the Taipei venue. Last year, after three cancelations, Argerich finally arrived in Taipei for the first time and was impressed by the hospitality with which she was greeted. She agreed to come back from something more than just a concert as a result, Taipei residents will be able to enjoy the first ever Argerich festival in Taiwan. At a time when male pianists dominate the international music scene, Martha Argerich has managed to achieve a position towering above her many male counterparts. He was among 30 competitors selected for the competition from a submitted videotape and other credentials. He has performed in 15 countries during the last 20 years and is a prizewinner in several national and international piano competitions. He also was one of 35 pianists invited to perform at the prestigious Van Cliburn Piano Competition in 1997. Two solo recitals, one chamber music performance and the final concerto round narrowed the field from 30 to the final three. The distinguished panel of judges included Argerich; Gygory Sandor, another renowned pianist who studied under Bartok; Eduardo Delgado, an Argentine who teaches in California; Aikiko Ebi, from Japan; and Alexis Gologin, a Russian who now lives in Switzerland. After the competition Dossin was invited to participate in the Martha Argerich Festival, performing with the Buenos Aires Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of conductor Charles Dutoit. He had other solo and orchestra performances during the Festival tour, always sharing the stage with Martha Argerich. (09 October, 2001) MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated) Starring: Martha Argerich There is not much video documentation of the great pianist Martha Argerich in her prime, so it is fortunate that this program, taped for Canadian television in 1977, gives a three-dimensional view of her various strengths. Ravel's Jeux d'Eau , which translates a fountain's flow and glitter into piano music, exemplifies the quality that most people notice first in her playing: dexterity and precision at breathtaking speeds. But there is also a fine awareness of the music's descriptive power. Liszt's moody Les Funerailles , in contrast, requires the ability to hold the music together as a coherent structure at very slow speeds, evoking a carefully defined atmosphere. This, too, she does splendidly. But the heart of the program is Schumann's Concerto in A Minor, one of the 19th century's greatest works in that form, rich in virtuoso display and heart-on-sleeve emotion and requiring fine rapport between soloist and orchestra. This disc fulfills all the music's potentials.
