I bought this disc as a sad reminder that she probably wont be giving many more recitals, or recording much new repertoire, let alone ever tour the African continent, and becuase she is a great pianist I never heard live. I was completely bowled over. Most live recitals one listens to every now and again, but her unique Argerich combination of energy, craftsmanship and mercurial insight that reveals new splendours even in well-known works, is simply addicting. I LOVE this disc. Martha Argerich: Live from the Concertgebouw 1978 and 1979 - Schumann, Ravel / Argerich >

There is dignity here,if thats what you crave, but also a sense of Chopin the unique experimentor of miniature forms, like cathedrals drawn on postcards,or the details of the figurines we place on top of mantles,or shadow boxes, mere mists of piano timbre,as the Eb-minor,or the F# minor. Kissin also finds in Chopin the realm of the rule breaker.
Chopin: 26 Pr©ludes, etc / Martha Argerich > Customer Review #2: Fiery Chopin I got this recording only because: a) I teach "music appreciation" classes and needed a copy of the Op. 28 Preludes for my CD library, and b) since its a re-release, its fairly affordable.

Pianist Martha Argerich is one of a kind, a caffeine-fueled fireball capable of conveying the power of Chopin and Rachmaninoff and the deep emotional impact of Mozart's piano concertos. At heart, she's a romantic, and none of her varied recordings is unsatisfying.

Web Search On the Aisle [INDEX] Carnegie Hall: Montreal Symphony Orchestra and Argerich By Philip Anson / October 28, 2001 On the Aisle The Montreal Symphony Orchestra made its annual autumn pilgrimage to Carnegie Hall this weekend with pianist Martha Argerich as headliner. On the evening of Saturday Oct. 27 Argerich was in her demoness phase. She seemed distressed, as if performing under duress, and made faces on the two occasions when she flubbed notes. It was one of those concerts where her former husband, conductor Charles Dutoit, had to encourage and cajole her from the podium, then try to keep up with her when she bolted from the gate like a racehorse. Of course, Argerich is always worth hearing, even when moody. Her Tchaikovsky was a titanic, momentous effort which her dark, slightly loony virtuosity made especially gripping. Argerich played loud and fast, attacking the keyboard with the broad strokes of a sculptor shaping a raw block of marble. Yet there were also flashes of detailed whimsy: her solo passage in the first movement was syncopated, almost jazzy. And she played the whole concerto at dizzying speed, as if to prove she still has the chops. The Prestissimo was about as fast as a human can play while still maintaining clarity and articulation. The orchestra struggled to keep up with the diva’s rapid tempi and unpredictable rubato. They framed her fireworks nicely, but made little statement of their own.

Legendary pianist Martha Argerich remains something of a mystery to the public, that an entirely original interview with her appears here is a rare and extraordinary gift. We extend our warmest thanks to her for her sharing of her unique and fascinating personality.
Jura Margulis: You were born in Argentina and your first piano teacher was Scaramuzza. Tell me about him. Martha Argerich: My mother took me to him when I was five, she always wanted the best...she was not herself a musician, but she knew what was the best thing to do. He was an Italian maestro, a despot with sadistic tendencies, mostly in his youth! I came to him when he was old, and milder, although still.... He taught several generations of the greatest pianists in Argentina, the father of Barenboim, De Raco, and Bruno Leonardo Gelber, who studied with him at the same time as me.
JM: Tell me some of the strange things he did to his students. Argerich: He would one day demand your wrist to be so high it would literally touch the lid, then the next day so low that your palm would touch the wood underneath the keys. This was not actually the way he wanted you to play, of course...The side effect was that the students who feared him would gather and confer about his whim of the day...you know, "today he wants the wrist up"...Another thing I remember, one student who traveled quite some way, and only once a month, was instructed to play on the piano as if he were cleaning the keys. you know, a certain staccato technique. The next month when he arrived for his lesson, Scaramuzza shouted "Cretino, what do you think you are doing ... cleaning the keys?" He was quite unpredictable, irrational, but a great teacher. He said a student is like iron or steel, if you bend iron it breaks, and the sooner the better. If you bend steel, it regains its original shape.

The Miraculous Martha !
Martha Argerich plays the Prokofiev Piano Concerto No 3 with Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony at Davies Hall, 2-4-October-1998

by William Hsieh
If sound could kill, I'm not sure anybody could have emerged from an Argerich concert alive, or at least unscathed. And I certainly wouldn't have survived to write this. On October 2-4, 1998 Argerich made her belated debut with the San Francisco Symphony conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas performing the Prokofiev Piano Concerto No 3 , her signature piece since 1957. Thirty minutes before the concert, I double-checked with the box office to see if she would indeed show up. I only stepped into the concert hall after their affirmative answer. After all, I was not about to be stood up by Martha for the fourth time. After the piano was set in place and the orchestra seated and tuned, an eerie silence ensued. Then thunderous applause when a gracious and matronly lady in black stepped on stage followed by MTT. My heart was in my throat. It was indeed Martha. For all these concerts she cancelled, there she was now bowing smilingly to the audience, as if to assure them she would indeed play. And God did she play! The second movement started in a relaxed but somewhat alert tempo. When the piano solo made its entry, however , what I heard was simply out of the world. Following low trills in E and F sharp, Argerich lashed out a scale passage that put the common notion of

Martha Argerich (born June 5 ) is a pianist of Argentinian origin. Argerich was born in Buenos Aires , and initially studied with her mother, who was a piano teacher. She gave her debut concert at the age of eight, playing a concerto by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart . The family moved to Europe in 1955, and Argerich studied with Friedrich Gulda in Switzerland . She later studied with Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli. In 1957, she won two major piano competitions within a few weeks, and her career as a professional pianist began. Argerich has not played solo concerts since the early years of her career, instead playing concertos chamber music and accompanying instrumentalists in sonatas. She is noted especially for her recordings of 20th century works by composers such as Sergei Rachmaninov Olivier Messiaen and Sergei Prokofiev , with her most famous record coupling Prokofiev's third piano concerto with Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky 's first. The orchestra on that recording was conducted by Charles Dutoit , to whom Argerich was married from 1969 to 1973.

The performances of the legendary pianist Martha Argerich are always special occasions and those on disc are no exception. This new release with EMI Classics is all the more so as it marks her first ever recording of Beethoven's Triple Concerto and she is joined by the violinist Renaud Capuçon and cellist Mischa Maisky, conducted by Alexandre Rabinovitch-Barakovsky.
The key to making this complicated concerto work is the relationship between the three soloists. The concerto works on many different levels, with the soloists having to respond to each other in the intimate way one would normally expect to hear in a chamber music work but in addition to this, they must respond to a full orchestra and conductor, at times all at once. Argerich, Capuçon and Maisky are regular collaborators and also friends, making them an ideal trio to make this Concerto a great success. Their performance has a great sense of spontaneity and at the same time, commitment, only possible with musicians this close. This recording of the Beethoven Triple Concerto is coupled with the Schumann Piano Concerto in A minor, both recorded live at the Lugano Festivals of 2002 and 2003 as part of the 'Martha Argerich Project'.

55. Martha Argerich
martha argerich. extent of animal excitement, what we generally associate with theyoung argerich. But it is what we treasure most of a temperamental pianist.
http://home.netvigator.com/~joelamkt/argerich.html
Martha Argerich
In the opening movement of the C-major Concerto of Beethoven, Argerich brought out the darker colour and Mozartian lyricism of the middle development section so wonderfully that only the old Kempff and young Perahia could match. She gave every bar the breath and space to sing. Before the well-known imagination of the grand old master, the lady find no shame. While the young man sounds satisfied with a lighter Mozartian grace, Argerich is determined to turn every bar into wonders. Here Richter begins to sound impatient to ponder, with his strong and stern drive forward. The great colorist ran dry of paint this time or did he only refrain himself from pouring out his colour too casually. No matter the reason, no one will regret Argerich for being too sensitive and imaginative in the two earlier Beethoven concertos. Yes, Argerich has matured. But it would be inappropriate to say that her playing is growing more intimate and serene, after more than three decades on the concert platform. Like most temperamental musician. She could, in different occassions, play with extremely different expression. Her recent recording of the Rachmaninov Concerto No.3 with Chaily was virtuosic to the extent of animal excitement, what we generally associate with the young Argerich. But it is what we treasure most of a temperamental pianist. She is always unpredictable. Some may even say she is revelatory, in the line of Horowitz, Richter, Cherkarssky,... Back to Index Page

Pianist Recognized as one of the greatest pianists of our time, Martha Argerich has had a colourful career pursued with a singular vision. Though dogged by recurrent ill health in recent years Argerich is playing with a passion and insight accorded few artists in any field. She has always been a maverick and her discography reflects her wide-ranging interests. She was a child prodigy, playing in public from the age of five. However, after her initial international successes in the late 1950s she retired from concert giving in 1960 for four years for further study. When she returned to the platform it was with a blazing energy that has rarely faltered since. Argerich is known as a virtuoso with a penetrating musical intellect. She has recorded not nearly as often as her fans would prefer, but most of her discs have achieved legendary status. Of particular note is her debut DG recording which has never left the catalogue in thirty-five years and her more recent recording of the Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No 3 with Riccardo Chailly on Philips which has been a worldwide best seller. Argereich is also a committed chamber music maker and she has collaborated with nearly all the important instrumentalists of her generation including Mstislav Rostropovich and Gidon Kremer, well documented on disc.

LP Stock Number: DG MG 2129 T he Argentinean fireballer first burst on the musical scene with this album. She now inspires a cult following despite (or because of) her penchant for canceling concerts at the last moment. She is said to not practice very much, virtually sight reading the pieces during the concert, which accounts for the improvisatory feeling of her performances. The pieces on this debut album were selected to showcase her superhuman keyboard technique. Chopin Scherzo No. 3 We are immediately put on notice that we are listening to a major talent. It is not just the technical mastery, which is evident from the first few bars, but the expressiveness with which Argerich plays. The articulation of individual notes is incredibly clean. The dynamics are awesome. The speed is breathtaking. Yet all this technical firepower is always at the service of the music, never technique for its own sake. The combination of sheer technical firepower and intelligent interpretation result in an immensely satisfying performance. Brahms 2 Rhapsodies Argerich gets to show a softer, more thoughtful side of her playing in the Brahms Rhapsodies. It is easy to get carried away with the power of her fortes, but the strongest side of her playing may well be in the softer passages where she gets to display her superb and delicate sense of touch. At times, these Rhapsodies seem more like lullabies so gentle and delicate is her playing. She tickles the keys and notes just hang there limpid, but never limp. Then she comes back with her trademark propulsive rhythms, driving the music along at breakneck speed. She plays through the barlines, taking the music in great huge gulps.
