What is Argerich?
Many people have asked me why the computer in my office is named "argerich" (full name argerich.colorado.edu). That's a long story that I won't get into here, but I will say that the name comes from the Argentine-born pianist Martha Argerich who is pictured above. Martha Argerich was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1941, and gave her first public performance at the age of 8 (some sources say 5). She studied in Europe with Friedrich Gulda, Nikita Magaloff, Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli, among others, and gave her debut recital in 1960 (a recording of this recital has recently been re-released by DG.) Some of my other favorite living pianists include Grigory Sokolov Helene Grimaud Radu Lupu , and Olli Mustonen. For sheer technical virtuosity no one can match the young Marc-Andre Hamelin . My most recent discovery is Eliso Virsaladze (thanks to BMG/Melodiya's Russian Piano School series). My favorite historical pianists change with time: right now, the list is headed by Sviatoslav Richter Emil Gilels , Arthur Rubenstein, Dinu Lipatti, Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli , and Julius Katchen. Next year it will probably be different.

Sunday, March 31, 2002 Celebrated pianist Martha Argerich to perform at Kimmel MARTHA ARGERICH By ROBERT BAXTER Courier-Post Staff Martha Argerich returns to Philadelphia to perform Robert Schumann's Piano Concerto with Charles Dutoit and the Philadelphia Orchestra April 4, 5 and 6 at the Kimmel Center. Argerich generates unparalleled excitement with her virtuoso technique and explosive temperament. Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1941, Argerich began studying the piano at age 5. By 16, she had won the prestigious Geneva and Busoni competitions. Five years later, a deep depression took Argerich off the concert circuit. In 1965, she resumed her career by winning the Chopin Competition in Warsaw. Argerich quickly claimed legendary status as one of the great keyboard artists of the age. She has left her mark on the virtuoso piano literature of the 19th and 20th centuries, but her repertory ranges from Bach and Mozart to Bartok and Prokofiev. Widely acknowledged as one of the supreme musical artists of the day, Argerich performs and records on her own terms. A battle with melanoma took her off the concert circuit in the 1990s. After the cancer went into remission, she resumed her career but gave up solo recitals to concentrate on performances of concertos and chamber music.

Saturday, April 6, 2002 Ovations galore for pianist Martha Argerich By ROBERT BAXTER Courier-Post Staff Like a meteor shooting through the night sky, Martha Argerich dazzles and excites every time she performs. Thursday night in Philadelphia's Verizon Hall, the pianist astonished a capacity audience when she joined Charles Dutoit and the Philadelphia Orchestra in a brilliant performance of Robert Schumann's Piano Concerto. Argerich set the tone at her first entry. Playing boldly and decisively, she charged the piano's opening statement with electric energy. Then, when the music turned lyrical, she refined her thunderous sound to a feathery pianissimo and caressed the notes with melting tones. Schumann's concerto is filled with rapid shifts like this. Argerich negotiated them all with matchless ease. In the lyrical episodes, she turned her piano into a singing voice filled with shimmering colors. In the more declamatory sections, she made her piano speak as she inflected the musical line with a myriad of subtle accents.

    EXCERPTS FROM A
RARE INTERVIEW WITH ARGERICH BY DEAN ELDER
    Clavier/September 1979

ELDER: ... An interview with Martha Argerich is an exploration of a woman who loves to laugh and who yearns for the verdant and azure spaces of a more natural life.
[In 1978, Dean Elder had just heard her performance of the Mozart Concerto in C, OP. 25, K503, at Avery Fisher Hall, at about the time EMI captured the broadcast-performance in Amsterdam released in mid-2000.
In describing the concert, he wrote, "...for Martha Argerich is about to play and prove that not all of Paradise has been lost."
"... She is considered by cognoscenti and public to be in the front rank of her generation. Few pianists are viewed with such awed admiration by their colleagues. Few pianists receive such frenzied ovations."

[Elder on the Mozart concerto that night]
"The performance of Mozart's great Concerto in C, K. 503 is exciting and note-perfect. She plays Mozart with a beautiful, silvery, limpid tone... "The New York Philharmonic conducted by Raphael Kubelik plays superbly. It is lovely Mozart, like a bird song, fresh and unpredictable. Argerich plays freely, effortlessly. Broken octaves ripple, turns are tossed off. The vehemence of her octaves and the brilliance of her passage work are as striking as her immense rhythmic vitality and feeling for tonal values.

Martha Argerich has through the past decades claimed the position as one of the greatest pianists of the post-war era. From her legendary debut recording in 1961 up till this day she has given the music world some of its most valued treasures, in form of recordings and concerts. Her recordings ranges from Bach to Bartók, with an emphasis on central romantic, and early modernist repertoire. Her name first occured after winning the 1957 Busoni competition at Bolzano, and she acquired additional fame with her remarkable debut recital on DG from 1961. She was also awarded the first prize in the Chopin competition in Warszaw in 1965.
Since then her probings into the works of Liszt, Chopin, Ravel, Prokofiev, Schumann, Bartók and others have given her a place in the Elysium of musicians along side with predecessors such as Horowitz, Richter and Gilels and contemporary colleagues such as Pollini, Zimerman and Perahia. As for my self, I must admit that no other pianist  have given me moments of pure heavenly bliss like Martha Argerich. I first encountered her in a recording of Ravel's Gaspard de la Nuit, and have since been a devoted fan and admirer of her stunning musicianship. I should therefore warn you, that this presentation, of this young man's greatest musical love is written through highly subjective and adoring glases.
Martha Argerich's production of recordings is extensive, and only a selection of them will be presented here.
