It had one of the finest if not the finest guest artists to debut with the CSO since Paavo Jarvi became CSO music director (September 2001). Pianist Piotr Anderszewski, 33, was born in Poland to Polish-Hungarian parents. Last year he won the Gilmore Artist Award, a quadrennial prize given for potential to achieve a major international career, not for a competition victory. Hearing him perform Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 1, it was easy to see why. Anderszewski is a stunning musician. He had a fine collaborator in guest conductor Gustav Kuhn, whose debut was notable also. Austrian born Kuhn, who made his conducting debut the year Anderszewski was born, led the CSO in Beethoven's "Egmont" Overture and the Symphony No. 6 ("Pastoral"). One was tempted to call Anderszewski's playing perfect, and in a classically styled work like Beethoven's First Piano Concerto, such exactitude is a virtue.

It must have been hard to live as a composer in the late Eighteenth and early Nineteenth century; after all your peers were Beethoven and Schubert! Such was the plight of the Irish-born composer John Field (1782-1837). On the other hand, Field had a successful career as a pianist. Not of the virtuoso Liszttian ilk, but rather one whose strength was color and sensitivity of touch. These characteristics emerge in Field's Fifth and Sixth Piano Concertos, The Fifth (1817) has the subtitle 'fire by lightning,' but the source of the title is unknown. It opens with a resounding Beethoven-like chord, but the music that follows more closely resembles the piano concertos of Chopin. The piano's role emphasizes delicate nuances, sonorous and intricate melodies, convincingly played by Benjamin Frith. The orchestral passages appropriately contrast the piano's role with drama and tension. The work brims with felicitous melodies and dramatic flourishes that engage the mind and heart. The Sixth Piano Concerto (1819) opens with a stately orchestral introduction that extends into an engaging 20 minute dialogue between piano and orchestra. A lovely, delicate larghetto is followed by an energetic but finely spun rondo. These concertos combine the drama and tension of Beethoven with the lyric delicacy of Chopin. Both are immensely enjoyable: they express the exuberant spirit of a composer who knew and loved the piano. Benjamin Frith plays with the freshness of discovery and wit that serve the composer perfectly. The Northern Sinfonia accompanies enthusiastically and the sound is clear and close, slightly wanting in reverberation. Those wanting to explore Field further are advised to try his Nocturnes, lovely, engaging pieces that admirably predate those of Chopin.

Sinfonia Varsovia/Piotr Anderszewski
Virgin Classics 5 45504 2 DDD 59:30
This is a follow-up to Anderszewski's well-received recording of Beethoven's Diabelli Variations (Virgin Classics 5 45468 2). The pianist excited comment during the Leeds Competition in 1990 when, displeased with his own performance, he stopped playing in the middle of the semi-final round and withdrew. Anderszewski leaves it to the piano to provide a cushion for the ears, treating the orchestra as its foil. Albeit within Classical boundaries, he uses timbre and phrasing to give the power of expression to these performances. In so doing, I think he permits himself interpretive and expressive liberties that he doesn't permit the Sinfonia Varsovia. This creates an interesting and not unmusical tension throughout the disc. Unfortunately, the piano has been balanced too far forward, and Anderszewski outplays the Sinfonia Varsovia during the music's climaxes. Anderszewski's fine technique allows him to conjure up brilliant effects when they are needed. He takes up a treasured tradition by playing his own cadenzas in both concertos. These, like his interpretations in general, are a bit left of center: Classical, but with a little twist of the knife. I also feel the knife twisting in the third movements of both concertos, because here the pianist's super-sensitive phrasing becomes a mannerism. There's something of an acid wit to these finales.

[63:10] full-price by Jonathan Yungkans "There is something to be said for a churlish temperament," Marcel Marnat writes in the notes for this disc. Beethoven's greatest compositions were often born into the world much like pearls from an oyster-with a little sand and considerable irritation. One particular irritant was publisher Antonio Diabelli, whose "botched piece of cobbling," as Beethoven called the waltz in "Danube peasant" style that Diabelli sent in 1819, aroused Beethoven's ire to extremes. But the pearl brought forth from this intense annoyance four years later was one of extraordinary price-a piece that, perhaps more than Bach's Goldberg Variations, could be called an Everest of piano writing as well as a towering summation of its composer's keyboard style.

BY LLOYD SCHWARTZ April and May dangle some seductive events in front of classical-music lovers that ought to tempt anyone who isn’t one already. I’m most looking forward to pianist Leon Fleisher ’s rescheduled celebration of his 75th birthday with music for one and two hands, including Brahms waltzes and Schubert’s great B-flat Sonata (Jordan Hall, May 20). Other FleetBoston Celebrity Series events that whet my appetite are soprano Dawn Upshaw (Jordan Hall, April 2); pianist Andrew Rangell in a challenging program that includes Charles Ives’s Concord Sonata (Jordan Hall, April 3); the Australian Chamber Orchestra , under Richard Tognetti, with pianist Piotr Anderszewski (Jordan Hall, April 30); and a duet recital with Metropolitan Opera mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade and bass Samuel Ramey (Symphony Hall, May 7); for information, call (617) 482-6661.
