Beethoven Piotr Anderszewski (piano); London Symphony Orchestra/Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Barbican Hall, Thursday, November 20 th , 2003 (CC) Substituting Beethoven’s Fourth Symphony for the Coriolan There must be something about Gardiner and downbeats, because the second movement did not begin together, either. Some suspect clarinet tuning was offset by effective antiphonal string writing. At this latter point, Gardiner seemed intent on exposing the modernist side of Beethoven, as he did also by asking the horns to stop certain notes which would have been impossible to play naturally on a hand horn, thus sharpening the texture. In fact, this was a performance that improved very much from movement to movement. Gardiner had obviously rehearsed a hierarchy of accents in the third movements that meant that phrases had real directionality and impulse, complementing the quirky Trio perfectly. The finale was a triumph, strings scurrying away. The tremendous drive was the result of accuracy of ensemble, not just speed. Things now augured well: the LSO had warmed up. Piotr Anderszewski has been making waves in pianistic circles recently. His

Beethoven Diabelli-Variationen Piotr Anderszewski (Klavier) Virgin/EMI 5 45468 2

What critics and journalists are saying about the ACO:
Glorious Beethoven (May 2004)
"The two seconds before the first notes of Beethoven's Overture to Coriolan sounded were among the most thrilling in the concert. Richard Tognetti raised his hands as if summoning a great inner power, and 30-odd musicians moved as one, taking a breath before unleashing a thunderous series of cadences. Each and every note was telling, precision-cut and framed by a tantalising silence in which the underlying rhythmic pulse was defined by a heartbeat. It was seriously exciting stuff, and a fine demonstration of this band's trust in raw instincts and innate musicality... The same energy was there in Beethoven's Triple Concerto, featuring soloists Tognetti, Emma-Jane Murphy (cello) and Benjamin Martin (piano). And then the Pastoral Symphony. Forget likeable. There is so much to love in Beethoven's Symphony No. 6 in F major, from the expansive beginning, to the delicate slow movement to the charming dialogue of the birds before the storm hits.
This really is glorious Beethoven - catch it if you can.

Re: Piotr Anderszewski
I asked Bruno Monsaigneon after a recent presentation if there is an artist before the public today whom he would put in the same category as Gould, Richter and Menuhin. He told me that he believed that Piotr Anderszewski, a young Polish pianist, combines many of the finest qualities of Gould, Richter and Michelangelli in his playing and his approach to music. He urged me to get his new Bach recording (French Suite no. 5 and the Overture in the French Style) which was released last year on Harmonium Mundi. I've got it on order. Does anyone know his playing?

Chopin Recital
Piotr Anderszewski (Virgin Classics 45602) Notice that two of these genres are specifically Polish. The mazurka was the national dance, the polonaise an old dance form that Chopin raised to the category of patriotic anthem. The mazurkas breathe romance and nostalgia, though Mr. Anderszewski's technique also illuminates their contrapuntal complexities. Even the third and fourth ballades, some of the most overplayed music there is, sound fresh under his fingers. E-mail ltaitte@dallasnews.com
