In April, Anderszewski became only the fourth pianist to receive the Gilmore Artist Award. The award is made to an exceptional pianist who, regardless of age or nationality, possesses broad and profound musicianship and charisma and who desires and can sustain a career as a major international concert artist. Along with Beethoven's "Diabelli Variations," considered one of the most daunting works in piano literature, Anderszewski's program will include two works by Bach, three preludes and fugues from "The Well-Tempered Clavier Book II," and "Partita No. 1 in B-flat Major." Anderszewski made his U.S. orchestral debut during the 2000-01 season with the Detroit Symphony and his New York orchestral debut last summer at the Mostly Mozart Festival. He has appeared in recital in most of the major European venues. His recitals in Chicago and Ann Arbor, Mich., in the fall of 2001 were well received, and he returned to Chicago last summer to replace Daniel Barenboim on the Chicago Symphony's Piano Recital Series.

FREE PRESS MUSIC WRITER Polish-Hungarian pianist Piotr Anderszewski has won the $300,000 Gilmore Artist Award for 2002, one of the most lucrative honors in classical music, administered by the Kalamazoo-based Gilmore Keyboard Festival. RELATED CONTENT
  • Gilmore Artist Award Anderszewski (On-der-shev-ski), who made his American orchestral debut with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra at the Meadow Brook Music Festival in July 2000, will receive $50,000 in cash and $250,000 for any career-related projects, such as purchasing a new piano, commissioning new music or a recording project. Anderszewski, 33, will make his debut as a Gilmore Artist at the 2002 Keyboard Festival, which opens Saturday and continues through May 11. The Gilmore also has selected Jonathan Biss, 21, and Kirill Gerstein, 22, to receive Young Artist Awards. Each will get $15,500 over the next two years to further their careers and education. Created in 1989, the Gilmore Prize is unique in the classical music world in that there is no formal competition. Instead, a committee travels the world, secretly evaluating pianists who are unaware that they have been nominated. The prize is named for the late Irving S. Gilmore, a Kalamazoo businessman, philanthropist and keyboard enthusiast.

Polish pianist puts Beethoven on hold but makes best of rest
March 30, 2004 BY WYNNE DELACOMA Classical Music Critic
When early announcements came out last year for Polish-born pianist Piotr Anderszewski's solo recital at Symphony Center on Sunday, his program was slated to include two Beethoven sonatas. In a later program update, Beethoven had vanished, replaced by works of Bach and Anderszewski's countryman Karol Szymanowski. Sunday afternoon's audience faced yet another changed program. The concert opened with Bach's B Minor Overture in the French Style, No. BWV 831, and Szymanowski's "Metopes,'' Op. 29. After intermission, however, it was all-Chopin, including the Three Mazurkas Op. 63, and the Piano Sonata No. 3 in B Minor, Op. 58. Some ticket buyers, their hearts set on Beethoven, were not happy. But artists' moods shift, and concert programs are planned months, even years in advance. Anderszewski is evidently not willing to stick to a program that once seemed like a good idea but appealed to him less as performance time approached. The Beethoven was doubtless a loss. Anderszewski made his Chicago debut in 2001 at Mandel Hall with an unforgettable performance of Beethoven's "Diabelli'' Variations, a daunting work that had become his signature piece. He played Bach, Szymanowski and Chopin last year at Symphony Center. Something different would have been appealing this season.

CAMPBELL SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER MUSIC CRITIC Piotr Anderszewski, the Polish-Hungarian pianist who made his Seattle debut Wednesday night at Meany Hall, is a musician who has gone his own way since the start of his career more than a decade ago. MUSIC REVIEW PIANIST PIOTR ANDERSZEWSKI WHEN: Wednesday night WHERE: Meany Hall He plays the music he wants to play regardless of what he thinks presenters want to present, audiences want to hear, recording companies want to record. And he has succeeded because he does what he does so well and so persuasively. His European career is already vigorous, and his American career is gathering momentum. The Seattle concert, almost 2 1/2 hours, began with Beethoven's massive "Diabelli" Variations. Most pianists see them as a final statement in the concert hall. Not Anderszewski. They are his signature piece, as extraordinary as that seems, and his opening gambit. That takes nerve: The 33 variations on a rather silly waltz last about an hour.

Piotr Anderszewski, piano Virgin Classics 7 24354 55262 5 Performance Sonics Listening to the first notes of Piotr Anderszewski’s new recording of Bach’s lovely Partita No.1, one senses a special artist at work. There’s a softness to his touch, a gentleness bordering on reticence, which makes the beauty of the opening Praeludium linger in the mind even as the music moves forward to the jaunty pace of the subsequent Allemande. Keyboard artist Piotr Anderszewski launched his international career at the age of 22 when he performed Beethoven’s immensely challenging Diabelli Variations in London’s Wigmore Hall in 1991. A slew of lauded international appearances and recordings followed, culminating in Anderszewski’s receipt of the 2002 Gilmore Artist Award. The Gilmore Artist Award (billed as “most generous” financial award granted in the musical arts) is only presented to exceptional pianists who possess broad and profound musicianship and charisma, desire and can sustain a major international concert career, and are considered capable of making “a real impact on music.” In acknowledgment for his many performances throughout the UK, Piotr Anderszewski has been honored with the 1991 Royal Philharmonic Society’s "Best Instrumentalist" Award. (Previous winners of this prize include such extraordinary artists as Murray Perahia, Itzhak Perlman, and Andras Schiff). Anderszewski has also been awarded the prestigious Szymanowski Prize for his interpretation of that composer’s music, and has received support from the Miami-based Patrons for Exceptional Artists Foundation.

Titel Artikelnr.
