Crest Homeowner Loses All , But Programs Are Available
Carmen Rico is a victim of the recent fires spreading through East County. She stands here in front of a pile of warm debris that used to be her home in Crest while her family sifts through the remains.
Turning left onto Mountain View Road, and then a left onto Sage Road, leads to a town called Crest, which is now encircled by skeletal homes, debris, ash, and anything metal that withstood the heat of the recent wave of fires.

George GERSHWIN (1900-1990)
An American in Paris • Porgy and Bess Suite • Cuban Overture • Gershwin in Hollywood
New Zealand Symphony Orchestra • James Judd
Playing Time 65:12
George Gershwin’s An American in Paris provides a further synthesis of the jazz that he saw as the essentially American folk-music and the traditional classical orchestra. This finds a further place in his triumphantly successful black opera Porgy and Bess, from which Robert Russell Bennett has drawn a Symphonic Picture. Cuban Overture turns to the characteristic rumba, while Gershwin in Hollywood is an instrumental arrangement by Bennett of some of Gershwin’s best known songs.

As a child, Rolo was greatly influenced by the folkloric wealth of Cayo Hueso, one of the epicenters of urban rumba. At the age of 15, Rolo was already singing professionally with various Havanese groups. A few years later, he became the lead singer of the popular conjunto led by Felix Chapotin, after Miguelito Cuni left his trumpet-playing partner to join forces temporarily with Benny More. Replacing Miguelito Cuni, one of the most important soneros of the 20th century, was definitely a valuable and challenging experience for the young singer from Cayo Hueso. During the second half of the 1950's, Rolo switched from the trumpet led conjunto sound to the so-called jazz band (Cuban style big band) format. This happened when he was recruited by the outstanding bandleader/arranger Ernesto Duarte, author of the classic bolero Como Fue. Backed by Duarte's orchestra, Rolo recorded certain tunes that quickly penetrated Havana's hit parade.

    CATHERINE MOYNIHAN
In an effort to add to an understanding of dance in Rhode Island from its historical, social, technical, and even personal perspectives, riDANCE will periodically publish interviews of dancers and people who have worked, studied, or moved in the Rhode Island dance world. Catherine (Kay) Moynihan was arguably in the Providence ballet scene longer than anyone else. As she played the piano for several generations of young ballet students, she watched Rhode Island develop from a ballet backwater into a thriving dance community. In addition, her own development into a musician and accompanist is interesting for what it says about how people change-aided by their family and friends, effected by expectations, and influenced by sheer happenstance. Until last November when she became ill, she routinely accompanied dance classes at Festival Ballet and played for the occasional performance at other schools. The majority of this interview was done on 15 June 2000 at her friend Onni Sironen's home
with a brief second interview in January 2001, and a few last minute phone calls. Sadly, Kay passed away from kidney failure on March 24, 2001.
