International Movement Opposes Tax-Funded Military Handouts to Colombia Government
About ten days ago, the following remarkable letter was sent to Bill Clinton, president of the U.S. federal government. William J. Clinton
President of the United States of America
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue
Washington DC 20500 Dear Mr. President: Our concern for the tragic situation facing the people of Colombia causes us to write to you. As citizens of many countries with a variety of political opinions, we are united in urging you to change your Colombian policy from a predominantly military strategy to an approach that supports the needs and hopes of the Colombian people. While it is impossible to summarize in one letter all the dramatic circumstances affecting Colombia, we want to highlight the points that seem most alarming to us:
    1. Reports from a number of sources, including the U.S. State Department, have documented the continuing collaboration between members and units of the Colombian armed forces and paramilitary groups. This collaboration has included several cases of open alliances. The paramilitaries, according to these reports, are responsible for 75% to 80% of the cases of assassination, kidnapping, torture, and massacre of civilian non-combatants, while the guerrilla groups and the armed forces commit the rest of these abuses. Only a few implicated officials and soldiers have been investigated and punished, while collaboration between the armed forces and the paramilitaries continues to this day. The U.S. contributes to the deterioration of this disturbing human rights situation by continuing to provide military aid, training, and sales, despite these well-documented reports of collaboration.

David Nixon's Carmen When coming to see Carmen it is "important not to expect to see the opera danced en pointe" says David Nixon. Although made popular by the opera, the story has been with us for much longer. It is his view of the essence of Carmen that Mr. Nixon seeks to explore in his medium - dance. In fact he feels that dance is a very good way to get to the Spanish heart of Carmen , as it is in dance that the Spanish people have found a true form of self expression. There is a natural understanding of dance in Hispanic culture. David Nixon's Carmen is not set in any particular time period. He did extensive research to narrow down a time frame but realized in the process that no historical references reinforced or added meaning to the story. Indeed it was the timelessness of the emotions and the ever present flavor of Spain that Mr. Nixon felt was at the heart of the tale.

Juan Pablo Torres y su Super Son have released new versions of their popular songs that were recorded in Cuba decades ago, with a new line-up of musicians from Cuba and Miami, including Tony Perez (piano), Israel Kantor (vocals), Feliciano "Pachu" Gomez (trumpet), Miguelito Cruz (percussion), Tuti Jimenez (Generoso's son) on pailas and Bamboleo's Vaina Borges on vocals. One of the biggest concept projects of the year has to be Buenavista, The Next Generation, where generations such as Ruben Gonzalez Sr. and Jr. play together. Other sets include Maria Ochoa with her brother Eliades, Amadito Valdes and his son, Cachaito with his nephew, and Compay Segundo with his grandsons. Add to the CD musicians J.P. Torres, Pio Leiva, Tata Guines and Pancho Amat and you have a historical recording for the ages. A DVD is also expected once the TV rights have been dealt with and will be available towards the end of next year. One of the highlights of the Buenavista, The Next Generation recording is Compay Segundo with his grandsons and sons. Nick Ali and Cruzao's Shades of Brown (Justin Time) is an experimentation of the tonal qualities of a "chordless quintet" (minus the piano and/or guitar structures) that while prominent in jazz since the '50s, has not been used in Latin America. Trumpeter Nick "The Brownman" Ali, and his brother, alto saxophonist Marcus Ali, have applied this chordless quintet jazz tradition to this Latin jazz recording and taken the sound to new heights. The Brownman also wrote all the compositions that cover everything from bossa nova, Latin jazz, hip hop, 2-3 son clave and samba.
