100 Great Poles
There has been a lot of controversy in UK about a BBC Poll to identify the 100 Greatest Britons. You can find that at 100 Great Britons
But what about the 100 Greatest Poles?
Pilsudski tops poll of all time great 100 Poles!
Well here are our top 100! Over 4,000 people voted online in each round. Firstly, to nominate great Poles for the top 100 and then, secondly to sort the top 10 into a final order. The top 100 includes 8 women and consists of 11 composers, 11 novelists and writers; 10 poets; 8 Kings, 8 Soldiers; 8 Politicians and Patriotic Leaders; 5 Playwrights; 4 Painters; 4 Actors; 4 Film Directors; 3 Church Leaders; 3 Martyrs; 3 Musicians; 2 Critics; 2 Saints; a Pope; an Educator; an Astronomer; a Scientist; a Union Leader; a Queen; a Science Fiction Writer; a Social Anthropologist; a Chronicler; a Folklorist; a Courier; a Painter and Set Designer; the Unknown Soldier; a Singer and a Rock Star! Some entrants feature in more than one category. Compared to the B BC’s 100 Great Britons we have no sportsmen and only one rock star – Kuba Sienkiewicz! Poland produces great sportsmen and popular entertainers who are regarded with respect and affection but maybe we take “greatest” more seriously.

Poland: Paper Chase
Marcin Hadaj
Rywingate, also known as the Rywin scandal or Rywin affair, is Poland’s most serious corruption scandal in a decade. Involving efforts by a film mogul to bribe the editor of Poland’s most popular newspaper, it reveals flaws in democratic rule just as the country is set to join the European Union. As the story goes, in the summer of 2002, Lew Rywin, the producer of Roman Polanski’s Oscar-winning movie The Pianist , solicited a bribe of $17.5 million from former dissident and Gazeta Wyborcza editor Adam Michnik in exchange for amendments to a media bill that would have enabled the paper’s parent company, Agora, to enter the television business. Rywin claimed to be speaking for people in the ruling Democratic Left Alliance (SLD). Though Michnik taped his conversations, he did not publicly acknowledge them until his paper broke the story in December, claiming that he sought to salvage Poland’s bid to join the E.U. by delaying until after the Copenhagen summit the same month. Prime Minister Leszek Miller, a friend of Rywin, and President Aleksander Kwasniewski were said to be aware of the shakedown, but they, too, remained silent until news of the bribery became public.

Poland borders on the Czech Republic. As such, it is natural that a citizen of the Czech Republic should be interested in and knowledgable about the accomplishments of Polish women throughout Polish history. With that in mind, Lenka submitted the following short discussions of many women in Polish history. The women are listed in historical order. She nearly received her bachelor's degree before being discovered. She ended in monastery. An article was written about her for a journal, Signs The information is based on Martin of Leibitz (d. 1464), an abbot from Vienna, who wrote her story in Senatorium sive dialogus historicus martini abbatis scotorum , Vienna, Austria, Leipzig, 1725. aus Warschau GABRIELE LESSER Alle erwarteten, dass Rywin nun endlich etwas sagen würde. Wozu also hätte man Rywin anzeigen sollen?

Katia Skanavi (pianist)
Born into a family of musicians and filmmakers, Russian pianist Katia Skanavi's brilliant career began in 1989 when she created a sensation at the Marguerite Long-Jacques Thibaud International Piano Competition. The jury awarded Miss Skanavi the Third Prize. However, the enthusiastic Parisian public chose her for the Audience Prize and filled the Salle Pleyel on her 18th birthday for her performance of the Saint-Saëns Concerto No.2 with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France. Though again not the winner, Miss Skanavi was arguably the most popular finalist at the Tenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition and subsequently received the Steven De Groote Memorial Award for her riveting performance with the Tokyo String Quartet. From her Cliburn success came repeated touring engagements throughtout North America, and heightened intermanional notoriety from Playing with Fire, a documentary about the Tenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, airing internationally since 1997. Katia Skanavi concertizes extensively in Japan and Europe, where she has appeared with many of the world's greatest artists and ensembles. Among them have been Yuri Bashmet, Lord Yehudi Menuhin, Victor Tretyakov, Maxim Vengerov, and the Tokyo, Talich and Ysaye String Quartets. She performs at the most celebrated concert venues. Among them number The Great Hall and Tschaikovsky Hall in Moscow; Salle Pleyel, Salle Gaveau, and the Teatre des Champs Elysees in Paris; La Scala in Milan; the Musikverein and the Konzerthaus in Vienna; Amsterdam's Concertgebouw; Suntory Hall in Tokyo and Osaka Symphony Hall. Her festival experience includes Gidon Kremer's Lockenhaus, the Wiener Klangbogen, the Schleswing-Holstein and Oslo Chamber Music Festivals.

KZNPO CONCERT – NOVEMBER 6 (article first published : 2003-11-7)
For many years musical intellectuals rather patronisingly regarded Chopin’s two piano concertos, written in 1830 when the composer was 20, as immature lightweight works. Nowadays they are seen for what they are: highly original, valuable compositions with a grace and elegance all their own. And these qualities were deftly disclosed by the Canadian pianist Adam Aleksander when he played the E minor concerto, Op. 11 , with the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra, under the baton of the distinguished American conductor Leslie Dunner, in the Durban City Hall on November 6. This is usually listed as the first of Chopin’s two concertos, but it is in fact the second. Not that it matters. Its pianistic brilliance found an admirable interpreter in Adam Aleksander, and the beautiful and languorous slow movement, an extended nocturne really, was played as poetically as one could wish. A fine performance which evoked much enthusiasm from the audience. Incidentally, the early arrivals in the hall were treated to the unusual and enjoyable spectacle of the soloist nonchalantly practising the twiddly bits at the piano on the floor of the hall, before it was raised to platform level by the lift which is now used for this purpose. A pleasantly informal touch.
