Government and Political conditions in Poland This article discusses the country of Poland. For other meanings, see Poland (disambiguation) The Republic of Poland , a country in Central Europe, lies between Germany to the west, the Czech Republic and Slovakia to the south, Ukraine and Belarus to the east, and the Baltic Sea, Lithuania and Russia (in the form of the Kaliningrad Oblast exclave) to the north. Its location and accessible terrain has meant that the land has seen many wars fought over it, and its borders have shifted considerably over the centuries.

The current government structure consists of a council of ministers led by a Prime Minister, typically chosen from a majority coalition in the bicameral legislature's lower house. The president elected every 5 years is head of state. The judicial branch plays a minor role in decisionmaking. Former SLD Alliance of the Democratic Left (Polish: Sojusz Lewicy Demokratycznej , SLD) is one of the main Polish social democratic political party, established on April 15, 1999.

VOLUME 31, NUMBER 28 THURSDAY, April 20, 2000 Jean Dickson is curator of the Polish Collection and subject specialist for modern languages and literatures in Lockwood Library. A UB librarian since 1986, she is responsible for collection development for French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish literatures and languages, in addition to providing both general and specialized reference service.
What are the origins of the Polish collection? What is in the collection? The books number about 11,000 volumes, while journal volumes are less than half that, so that we really are crowding the room now. The Polish Room is all shelving and books now-no space for reading or contemplating, I'm sorry to say. The major areas in which I have been selecting books are history and current social sciences of Poland and Polish language and literature. There also is a fair representation of books on Polish art, history of Polish Americans, and a few books on other subjects, such as philosophy and music. Most of the books I order are in Polish, but a significant minority are in English. Other Lockwood librarians are careful to order books from United States presses that address Polish history, society and arts, when they encounter them. In recent years, I have added about 50 videotapes of feature films and educational films, which are accessible through the UB Libraries online catalog and probably are the most heavily used category of materials in the collection. How is the collection used and by whom?

One of the premiere American conductors of his generation, LESLIE B. DUNNER enjoys an international career, distinguished by the breadth of his repertoire as well as his electrifying and critically lauded performances.
Early in 1999, Leslie B. Dunner ended an 11-season association with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, having held the posts of Resident, Associate and Assistant Conductor. During this time, he led the Orchestra in every type of program, from subscription and tour concerts to Pops, Educational and Young People's Concerts. In 1999, his live-recording performance of Alvin Singleton's BluesKonzert with pianist Ursula Oppens and the DSO was released to critical acclaim on the album Ellington and the Great Masters. From 1996-1999, Dr. Dunner was Music Director of Canada's Symphony Nova Scotia; subsequently, he served five seasons as Music Director of the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra, where he reinvigorated that institution and brought it national recognition for its artistic achievements, wide-ranging programming, composer-in-residence forum and innovative educational experiences..
From 1994 through 2001, Leslie B. Dunner served as an assistant conductor to Kurt Masur and the New York Philharmonic, accompanying them in this capacity on their 1995 10-city European tour. From 1987 to 1994, he was Music Director of the Detroit Symphony Civic and Dearborn Symphony Orchestras, Music Advisor for the Harlem Festival Orchestra and a cover conductor for Erich Leinsdorf at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. In addition, he was Principal Conductor of the renowned Dance Theatre of Harlem, leading performances throughout North and South America, The United Kingdom (including a gala performance for Diana, Princess of Wales), Austria's Salzburg Festival, Denmark's Tivoli Festival, the former Soviet Union and on the troupe's historic 1992 debut tour of South Africa, during which they performed in the presence of Nelson Mandela. With DTH he also served as music advisor for several European television productions.

Average review score: Not as great as its cracked up to be WOW!!! I can not imagine more accurate interpretations of these prodigious works...except (maybe) from Chopin himself. Pollini far transcends those pianists who believe that Chopin's music is romantic - Chopin never exaggerated anything (as in the normal Romantic Era tradition). Chopin's music was direct and forceful, as is Pollini. Chopin's music was nostalgic and deep, as is Pollini. Very few pianists understand Chopin as deeply as Pollini does...I highly reccommend this CD. An eagle's perspective Chopin: Polonaises (Complete), Vol. 1

THE DAYS OF POLISH CULTURE IN RUSSIA
H eld between May 14th and 20th, 2001, the Days of Polish Culture in Russia were the first extensive presentation of Polish culture in the Russian Federation in many years.
Designed to promote Polish culture in Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Vladimir, the program was developed and implemented by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute.
The purpose of the promotional project was to present Poland as an open, European country, and a member of European and North Atlantic structures, but also a country that remembers its history, is aware of its geographical position, and its role as a friend of Russia.
The project was addressed to members of the Russian artistic and cultural elite with an interest in various cultural spheres. Efforts were also made to target a broader audience. These included a Polish cinema program that primarily included feature films.
The program for the Days of Polish Culture in Russia was extensive to say the least. Presentations included the best and largest Polish exhibitions, as well as concerts, theatrical performances, film screenings, and seminars.
A number of prominent Polish cultural figures participated. The program for the Days of Polish Culture in Russia included:

Jaromir Honzak Quintet
Piotr Baron - tenor and soprano saxophone, Christian Rover - guitar, Michal Tokaj - piano, Lukasz Zyta - drums, Jaromir Honzak - double bass
This new band of Jaromir Honzak exists for about a year and a half. The use of electric guitar, bowing bass and ocassional use of electric piano add new colors to the sound of the band. The quintet performs exclusively original compositions by the leader. Some of the music was recorded and released before on albums "Getting There Together" and "Earth Life" (the latter was awarded a prize for the best Czech jazz album of the year of 2000 by Harmonie magazine). Most of the repertoir, however, was composed for this new quintet and is released right now by the Indies Records on the new album "Present Past". The music is labeled as an "open style contemporary music" by the leader.
