to all material Pianist rises to demand of challenging repertoire ADAM ALEKSANDER (piano), presented by the Music Society of Port Elizabeth in collaboration with UPE Cultura (UPE Auditorium): THE Canadian pianist Adam Aleksander has an impressive CV, including many top prizes for his live performances and his recordings. His Port Elizabeth programme was devoted to works by Beethoven and Liszt, opening with Seven Bagatelles by Beethoven. Each bagatelle was surely characterised and, while his playing was polished and sympathetic, his articulation in the faster pieces was exhilaratingly crisp and clean. Aleksander then went on to the main work of the first half of the programme, Beethoven’s Sonata in C Minor Op. 111 . This was the last piano sonata that Beethoven wrote and shows all his experience and musical genius. The composer’s sense of texture, development, structure and refinement was at its highest and the work requires a performer with great skill and subtlety to do it justice. The pianist showed us that he has both the artistry and technical fluency required to give the sonata a convincing performance.

2001: THE YEAR OF PADEREWSKI
The Polish Sejm (Parliament) proclaimed the year 2001 as the "Year of Paderewski" - thus honoring the great pianist, composer, statesman and humanitarian on the 60th anniversary of his death in June, 1941. You may read an essay about his life and music by Wanda Wilk and find a selected list of works on our site at: ~/composer/paderewski.html . Recently, we were informed that the site does not include one important detail: on July 5, 1992, President George Bush fulfilled a promise made to Paderewski before the death of the great statesman and composer, to send his remains home with full honors when Poland was free.

Biography
F ryderyk Franciszek Chopin, the Polish composer and pianist, was born on 1 March 1810, according to the statements of the artist himself and his family, but according to his baptismal certificate, which was written several weeks after his birth, the date was 22 February. His birthplace was the village of Zelazowa Wola near Sochaczew, in the region of Mazovia, which was part of the Duchy of Warsaw. The manor-house in Zelazowa Wola belonged to Count Skarbek and Chopin's father, Mikolaj (Nicolas) Chopin , a Polonized Frenchman, was employed there as a tutor. He had been born in 1771 in Marainville in the province of Lorraine in France, but already as a child he had established contacts with the Polish families of Count Michal Pac and the manager of his estate, Jan Adam Weydlich. At the age of 16, Mikolaj accompanied them to Poland where he settled down permanently. He never returned to France and did not retain contacts with his French family but brought up his children as Poles.
In 1806, Mikolaj Chopin married Tekla Justyna Krzyzanowska , who was the housekeeper for the Skarbek family at Zelazowa Wola. They had four children: three daughters:

Pillars of jazz from over the Vistula
The jazz played during the early Polish festivals in the 1950's was improvised, based on well known standards, and following all the rules of this music. Young enthusiasts were, however, mainly amateurs. Thus in comparison with American or even European musicians the standard of performing jazz in Poland was relatively low. During the 1950's, a few jazz bands were created, including: MELOMANI / Music Lovers of Jerzy "Dudus" Matuszkiewicz, SEKSTET / Sextet of Krzysztof Komeda, JAZZ BELIEVERS of Jan Ptaszyn Wroblewski, and NEW ORLEANS STOMPERS , who played traditional jazz. During the period between 1956 and 1960, the talents of musicians who create and perform until today emerged and developed. These musicians have clearly influenced the activities of the next generations of Polish jazzmen. These are:
