His wide-ranging career has taken him to new avenues, such as his recent BargeMusic concert in New York City, which included his own compositions written in response to works of visual art, copies of which were displayed in the hall. In a more mainstream vein, Albulescu gave his Carnegie Hall debut playing Liszt's E flat Concerto with the Orchestra of St. Peters in November 2001. A month later he traveled to Romania to perform Tchaikovsky's 1st Concerto with the Georges Enescu National Philharmonic . In February 2002 he gave a solo recital at the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. The 2002-3 season included performances in Arizona, Colorado, Pennsylvania, and in Tennessee interpreting Beethoven’s ‘Emperor’ Concerto with the Johnson City Symphony. In November 2004, Albulescu will collaborate with the Fry Street Quartet for the Chamber Music Society of Salt Lake City in a concert including the Brahms f minor Quartet. Albulescu will tour with the Fry Street Quartet throughout the 2004-5 season. Albulescu will also tour California in mid-January 2005, beginning with a solo recital in San Diego.

Rolfs Piano Series Biographical Sketches TADEUSZ MAJEWSKI October 16, 1999 Tadeusz Majewski, recipient of a 1997 McKnight Artist Fellowship, has won many honors in piano competitions in his native Poland, including the top award at the 1977 Annual Chopin Society Competition in Warsaw. He made his first public appearance at the age of thirteen, performing at the Philharmonic Hall in Krakow. After emigrating to the U.S., he had private coaching sessions with Murray Perahia at the Aldeburgh Festival and with Andras Schiff in London. Under full scholarship, he furthered his studies at the Banff Centre in Canada with such distinguished piano pedagogues as Menahem. Pressler, John Perry, and Richard Goode. During his residency at Banff, Mr. Majewski's eminent chamber music coaches included James Buswell, Thomas Brandis, and Greta Kraus. Tadeusz Majewski has been a soloist with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra under Philip Brunelle, the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra at the Banff Centre, the Baltic Philharmonic Orchestra in Gdansk, the Spokane String Quartet, and Shapiro and Smith Dance Company in New York. His recitals include the Old First Concerts in San Francisco, the Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concerts in Chicago, and the Pick-Staiger Concert Hall at Northwestern University. Noted pianist Eugene Albulescu berates a Wellington newspaper critic from the concert platform. Writing for THE NZ LISTENER (July 13, 1996) journalist Howard Smith reviews the incident. ALBULESCU'S COMPLAINT WHEN pianist Eugene Albulescu retaliated from the stage against critic Tim Bridgewater at a Wellington concert last month, he may have slammed the door shut on his New Zealand career. Within 24 hours, Chamber Music New Zealand (CMNZ) - parent body of the Wellington Chamber Music Society, which organised the concert - had called off Albulescu's planned tour of New Zealand next year. It told his US agent that he had "spent four or five minutes from the stage, berating" Bridgewater. It was during Sibelius' Piano Sonata, the last item on the programme of the afternoon concert, that 26-year-old Albulescu resolved to speak out - not expecting, he says, to "cause a nuclear reaction." He told the audience of his disquiet at 10 years of "personal" and adverse reviews by Bridgewater, who reviews for the Dominion. His letters of complaint to the Dominion had gone unanswered, and - he said later - "I'd found it increasingly difficult to play at my best in Wellington." An encore followed, but there will be no more encores for the Rumanian-born, Wellington-based pianist as far as CMNZ is concerned. "This was extremely embarrassing for both the audience and the organisers of the concert," a spokesperson declared. "CMNZ is not prepared to take that sort of risk for concerts under its auspicies."

Winner of the International Grand Prix du Liszt for his debut CD, he is also one of the youngest pianists to hold the historical prize, joining legendary recipients such as Arrau, Horowitz, Bolet and Brendel. Albulescu has received superlative accolades from critics wherever he has played. In the USA this has included major dailies such as the Washington Post, which praised him for his "intensity, knowledge and technique". He has already performed and recorded on four continents, as well as being a founding member of the highly acclaimed New Zealand chamber group, the Turnovsky Trio. Eugene Albulescu gave his New York debut in 1996 with a unique solo recital at Bargemusic, when his landmark interpretation of Beethoven's Hammerklavier Sonata was honored by National Public Radio station WNYC with a live broadcast. A native of Romania, Albulescu attended the George Enescu Music School in Bucharest, and emigrated to New Zealand with his family in 1984 to escape Romania's Communist regime. At 16 he was the youngest competitor and winner of Television New Zealand's Young Musicians Competition. Now, I'm sure many of us had detected wisps of infernal meddling in the opening and in other parts of this epic work, not to mention muted spirituality, while understanding less the why's, what's and how's. It is quite a treat, then, to rehear this imposing sonata when molded by a performer who not only wields an artistic but deeply conceived programmatic agenda as well. There is perhaps some truth to the notion that Liszt is a composer that can survive a bit of understatement with respect to interpretation, and perhaps that is what my ears tell me most is happening with Albulescu's piano.
