Last Year's Program Near Field Optics: Physics, Devices, and Information Processing (AM409) CONFERENCES Conference Chairs: Aaron Lewis, Hebrew Univ. of Jerusalem (Israel); H. Kumar Wickramasinghe, IBM Corp A consequence of diffraction in lens based optics is that light cannot be focused to smaller than its wavelength. The advent of near field scanning optical microscopy, a technique capable of resolving optically subwavelength structures, has attracted much attention. Near-field optics has evolved as a very effective bridge between the ubiquitous and ever expanding worlds of optical microscopy and the exploding imaging modalities of scanned probe microscopy. The conference will be focused on all aspects of near-field optics that are based on techniques in which light is passed through a subwavelength aperture, in which apertureless methods are used and in which solid immersion lenses are employed. It is the aim of this conference to develop into the recognized forum that will advance the field of near-field optics and its role in integrated solutions to microscopic problems. Fertile interactions between the various approaches of near-field optics are a principle objective of this conference. Participants will be provided with an evolving consensus of the most fruitful applications of the various methodologies of near-field optics.

How many people does it take to run an x-ray microscope? Only one, but four of us posed for this picture.
Left to right: Janos Kirz, Sue Wirick, Xiaodong Zhang, and Chris Jacobsen. Welcome to the x-ray optics and microscopy group at Stony Brook. We use coherent soft x-rays for optics experiments. Much of our effort is directed towards using Fresnel zone plates to produce one of the smallest focused spots of electromagnetic waves of any wavelength, and exploiting these nanofocused beams for studies of biological and environmental science specimens; and obtaining images from the reconstruction of holograms and diffraction patterns of non-crystalline specimens. De Broglie wavelength of a non-local four-photon state

    (Nature 429, 158-161, 2004)

by Philip Walther, Jian-Wei Pan, Markus Aspelmeyer, Rupert Ursin, Sara Gasparoni, Anton Zeilinger We demonstrate the generation of four-photon entangled states and their subsequent utilization in pure four-particle interferometry. The observed interference fringes confirm the theoretical expectation that the de-Broglie wavelength of a four-photon state is one fourth of a single photon. This overcomes state-of-the-art two-particle interferometry and opens new possibilities in quantum metrology and in quantum imaging applications. The novel zero-additional-phase SPIDER (ZAP-SPIDER) allows to fully characterize the temporal amplitude and phase of the shortest ultraviolet, visible and infrared pulses available today. The unknown pulse is not altered and the pulse shape is measured at the interaction point of a spectroscopic experiment. Details mailto: webmaster last change: 22.04.04
