A Brief History of Physics
Dan Mitchell takes a look at life, the universe and everything
Ten years ago Stephen Hawking announced, in characteristically confident fashion, that the unification of science was imminent. Hawking was referring to was the advent of a Grand Unified Theory, which would finally enable physicists to treat the four seemingly intrinsic forces of nature - weak, strong, gravitational and electromagnetic forces - as manifestations of a single deeper, fundamental interaction. Today, despite the plethora of candidates, none of the vaunted theories has lived up to its billing. Theoretical physicists nevertheless jealously guard their belief in the eventual reconciliation of physics without questioning whether such an outcome is actually tenable. The real fallacy lies not in the quest for a possibly unattainable goal, but in the lack of familiarity with the philosophical issues underpinning that search. Physicists seem to have forgotten that the scientific method is the culmination of heated metaphysical argument stemming largely from the time of the Renaissance and Reformation. To understand this "crisis of perception" it is imperative to re-evaluate the historical context and origin of analytical thinking, with which Descartes is largely credited. To comprehend the behaviour of a system, he asserted that it was necessary to break up complex phenomena into their constituent parts, understanding the whole from their properties. He separated the world into the "res cogitans" (the internal/mental world), and the "res extensa" (the external world). This is known as mind-matter dualism and it allows one to speak in terms of a subject-object - objective reality independent of a subjective observer.

Some people may believe that 20th and 21st century physics research has less of a direct impact on their daily lives than biology, chemistry, engineering, and other fields. Perhaps they think of physics as an abstract, enigmatic, or purely academic endeavor. Others think that physics only contributes to national defense and medical imaging . I created this page to dispel those myths.
Nearly everyone would agree that the computer, the transistor, and the World Wide Web are among the greatest inventions of the 20th century. Economists and laymen alike know that today's entire world economy is inextricably linked to these technologies. The daily lives of a large fraction of Earth's inhabitants would be substantially different were it not for their inventions. Most would agree that America's preeminence in computer and information technology is at least partly responsible for its status as an "economic superpower." The wealth of other nations such as Japan, Taiwan, countries in Western Europe, and others is also due, in part, to their embracement of, and contributions to, the information age.
Read below to learn these little known facts: The electronic digital computer, the transistor, the laser, and even the World Wide Web were all invented by physicists. These inventions make up the foundation of modern technology.

    History of Physics in Prague
The beginning of science in the Czech territory is related to the founding of the Charles University in Prague by Emperor Charles IV in 1348. During the first centuries of its existence the lectures on physics and astronomy were held in the arts (now philosophy) faculty. The outstanding personalities were Christian of Prachatice (1366-1439), a close friend of Master Jan Hus, and Jan Ondrejuv called Sindel (1375-1454). They were concerned with astronomical observations. Sindel's measurements of the planets and the Sun were so accurate that they were still praised by Tycho Brahe two centuries later. The high level of science in Prague at that time is confirmed by sophisticated Prague Astronomical Clock at the Old Town Hall - the medieval planetarium. It was made according to Sindel's plans by the clockmaster Mikulas of Kadan in 1410. During the religiously tolerant reign of Emperor Rudolph II (1576-1612) who was interested in science and arts, favourable conditions for the development of natural sciences were established. The personal physician of Rudolph II and astronomer Tadeas Hajek of Hajek (1525-1600) published his studies of a supernova in the constellation Cassiopea in 1572. Hajek was in frequent scientific correspondence with the recognized astronomer

Actually, the spear (called a dart or yaomitl ) is much more like an arrow. It has fletching added to stabilize flight and is quite flexible. The dart can come in many different lengths. By way of example, the author's has darts which are 7 feet long. The atlatl is the hooked stick used to throw the dart. It too can come in many different lengths and styles. The author's atlatl is about 1/3 the length of the darts. History of the atlatl The atlatl may be one of the first compound weapons that is, a tool used to enhance human power. While the earliest archeological evidence is 25,000 years old, it is believed that atlatl has been in use for some 40,000 years.

A biography of Andrei Sakharov and his contributions to Soviet nuclear weapons research, nuclear fusion, cosmology, human rights, and world peace. Includes a bibliography and links to related sites.

    Text Version
ndrei Sakharov (1921-1989) was a Soviet physicist who became, in the words of the Nobel Peace Committee, a spokesman for the conscience of mankind . He was fascinated by fundamental physics and cosmology, but first he spent two decades designing nuclear weapons. He came to be regarded as the father of the Soviet hydrogen bomb, contributing perhaps more than anyone else to the military might of the USSR. But gradually Sakharov became one of the regime’s most courageous critics, a defender of human rights and democracy. He could not be silenced, and helped bring down one of history’s most powerful dictatorships. This exhibit tells about Sakharov’s extraordinary life. Introduction

Most of us are familiar with the boomerang, the wonderful stick that returns when you throw it. However, most of us don't know the history of the boomerang or the complex physics and aerodynamics involved. To understand why a boomerang returns, we must look at the shape of the boomerang, the aerodynamics and physics. Finally, the correct throwing technique will be discussed.
    History
The boomerang is often times thought of as a weapon. However, the boomerang has always been primarily a recreational toy. The real weapon used by the Aborigines was the killer-stick. The killer-stick shares many properties with the boomerang except one. The killer-stick does not return!
The killer-stick was simply a stick honed to have a cross-section similar to a modern day airfoil. This stick actually flew through the air at high speeds. It was given a rotation at launch for stability much like the discus and frisbee of today. The killer-stick could be thrown very far and with great accuracy.
