Physics is the most fundamental science. It involves understanding the basic principles by which all things in the universe exist and operate. Therefore Physics is the foundation of other scientific disciplines. It is also the natural basis of all the technology disciplines such as electronics, engineering and computer science which were pioneered by physicists. Undergraduate study, Programmes and Papers For students with an interest in Physics as an academic discipline, several courses in core theoretical and experimental Physics are available at all undergraduate levels. For more technologically inclined students the Department offers courses and programmes in electronics and has well equipped teaching laboratories for this purpose. Postgraduate study and Papers Physics and Electronics graduates are in demand both in New Zealand and overseas. The education which you will receive at the University of Waikato will equip you for a satisfying and successful career.

Multimeter VOM
Ammeters measure current, voltmeters measure voltage,
and ohmmeters measure resistance. These devices are often combined into one instrument
called a multimeter or VOM (volt-ohm-milliemmeter). Analog versions of ammeters and voltmeters typically
utilize a galvanometer, which relies on magnetic effect. A needle is deflected by an amount proportional to
the current passes through the device (coil). A good ammeter should have a resistance that is small
compared to other resistance in the circuit. A good voltmeter should have a large resistance. This java applet shows how to utilize a galvanometer into a multimeter. The full scale current for the galvanometer is 50uA
with internal resistance 2k ohm. The following applet shows the simplified version
circuit diagram for a real multimeter. You can operate at different mode: 1. select the Mode (Voltage/Current/Resistance) : 2. select the appropriate range for that mode. 3. You can change values of the DC voltage source V and resistor R:
You can also modify V/R by click the mouse button at the device.

Prefixes for binary multiples In December 1998 the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), the leading international organization for worldwide standardization in electrotechnology, approved as an IEC International Standard names and symbols for prefixes for binary multiples for use in the fields of data processing and data transmission. The prefixes are as follows: Prefixes for binary multiples Factor Name Symbol Origin Derivation kibi Ki kilobinary: (2 kilo: (10 mebi Mi megabinary: (2 mega: (10 gibi Gi gigabinary: (2 giga: (10 tebi Ti terabinary: (2 tera: (10 pebi Pi petabinary: (2 peta: (10 exbi Ei exabinary: (2 exa: (10 Examples and comparisons with SI prefixes one kibibit 1 Kibit = 2 bit = 1024 bit one kilobit 1 kbit = 10 bit = 1000 bit one mebibyte 1 MiB = 2 B = 1 048 576 B one megabyte 1 MB = 10 B = 1 000 000 B one gibibyte 1 GiB = 2 B = 1 073 741 824 B one gigabyte 1 GB = 10 B = 1 000 000 000 B It is suggested that in English, the first syllable of the name of the binary-multiple prefix should be pronounced in the same way as the first syllable of the name of the corresponding SI prefix, and that the second syllable should be pronounced as "bee." It is important to recognize that the new prefixes for binary multiples are not part of the International System of Units (SI), the modern metric system. However, for ease of understanding and recall, they were derived from the SI prefixes for positive powers of ten. As can be seen from the above table, the name of each new prefix is derived from the name of the corresponding SI prefix by retaining the first two letters of the name of the SI prefix and adding the letters "bi," which recalls the word "binary." Similarly, the symbol of each new prefix is derived from the symbol of the corresponding SI prefix by adding the letter "i," which again recalls the word "binary." (For consistency with the other prefixes for binary multiples, the symbol Ki is used for 2

MAGNETOELECTRONICS, SPIN ELECTRONICS, AND SPINTRONICS are different names for the same thing: the use of electrons' spins (not just their electrical charge) in information circuits. One magnetoelectronic device is the magnetic hard drive based on the giant magnetoresistance (GMR) effect. In a GMR material, consisting of a stack of alternating layers of magnetic and nonmagnetic atoms, a small magnetic field can produce a large change in electrical resistance. Already a billion dollar business, GMR read heads will boost disk drive densities from 1 to 20 Gbits, and GMR might be incorporated into random access memory units as well (Gary Prinz, Science , 27 Nov 1998). The latest demonstration of spin versatility is the organized movement of a herd of spins over a lateral distance of 100 microns. In an experiment at UC Santa Barbara, David Awschalom first aligned the spins of a swarm of electrons and then nudged them across a semiconductor strip without the spin bunch falling apart. Such coherence will be necessary if spin currents are to transport information from place to place, particularly in quantum computers. ( Nature , 14 Jan 1999.)

PHYSICS AND ELECTRONICS
The research area of Physics and Electronics (FE) is a multi-disciplinary research area spanning a vast range of subjects including theoretical physics, materials physics, automatic control and the design and production of electronics systems. Examples of ongoing research are high frequency (Ghz-THz) electronics and organic electronics, in which novel electronic components are comprised of organic materials. Some members of the research group conduct research in physics didactics, which fits in well with the undergraduate education initiatives of the group. In total 40 staff members teach and/or conduct research in the FE area. Of these approximately half are postgraduate students.

Physicists seek to understand natural phenom- ena at the fundamental level of space, time, matter and motion. This quest encompasses everything from the formation of stars to the best design for a bridge. Alma's Physics Department offers a bal- anced program of pure and applied physics, introducing essential scientific understanding and investigating its applications. As a physics student at Alma, you will acquire the theoretical knowledge and the practical skills to succeed in immediate employment or in further professional training. Aside from theo-retical work, you will have the oppor-tunity to gain a variety of practical experiences in many areas, including optics, astronomy, nuclear physics and satellite image processing. You may also complete a second major or minor in mathematics or computer science. In addition, Alma's Electronics minor provides courses in electronic instrumentation, digital electronics, microcomputer programming and interfacing and telecommunications.
Facilities
As a science student at Alma, you will do your laboratory work in the Dow Science Center. Completely renovated in 1991, this modern facility features laboratories in physics, electronics, optics, nuclear science, astronomy, physiology, biology and geology. We also have a fine planetarium. Students working on independent research pro-jects are assigned individual space to use at any time, including evenings and weekends.
