Astronomy 162
Stars, Galaxies, and
Cosmology
In our first semester of astronomy we were concerned primarily with our own Solar System. In this semester we broaden our perspective and consider the entire Universe. Much of the material for this semester is already on the Web at the Violence in the Cosmos site, but it is arranged in a different order than it will be when the following sequence is completed.
  • Properties of Light
  • Star Clusters (Not Complete)
  • The Hertzsprung-Russell Diagram (Not Complete)
  • Recipe for Stars (Not Complete)
  • Protostars (Not Complete)
  • Life on the Main Sequence (Not Complete)
  • Variable Stars (Not Complete)
  • The Death of Stars like the Sun (Not Complete)
  • Ejection of the Envelope (Not Complete)

Welcome to the new Multiwavelength Milky Way web pages! These pages bring together several data sets to visualize images of our Milky Way galaxy in various wavelength regions. The site's intent is to present and explain how data across the electromagnetic spectrum are used by astronomers to learn about the Milky Way's shape, size, and composition.

Nonlinear Hyperbolic Waves in Phase Dynamics and Astrophysics
    27 Jan - 11 Jul 2003 Organisers : Professor C M Dafermos ( Brown ), Professor P G LeFloch ( CNRS ), Professor E F Toro ( Trento
    Programme theme
Quasilinear hyperbolic systems in divergence form, commonly called 'hyperbolic conservation laws', govern a broad spectrum of physical phenomena in compressible fluid dynamics, nonlinear material science, etc. Such equations admit solutions that may exhibit various kinds of shocks and other nonlinear waves (propagating phase boundaries, fluid interfaces, etc.) which play a dominant role in multiple areas of physics; astrophysics, cosmology, dynamics of (solid-solid) material interfaces, multiphase (liquid-vapor) flows, combustion theory, etc. The programme will also have a computational component; numerical schemes for multiphase flows and fluids with non-convex equation of state, exact or approximate Riemann solvers for relativistic and non-relativistic flows, etc. Short-courses, theme weeks and conferences will provide a valuable opportunity for reviewing the state of the art on the physical models, the techniques of mathematical analysis, and the numerical analysis, and for discussing open problems among the participants.
