Ludwig Wittgenstein e la filosofia giapponese
Satori, kouan e gioco linguistico
di Cristiano Martorella
Wittgenstein e il pensiero orientale
Buddha aveva indicato agli orientali l'origine della sofferenza.
Continuamente o a intermittenza?"

jnubiola@unav.es To appear in I. Angelelli y M. Cerezo, eds., Proceedings of the III Symposium on History of Logic , Gruyter, Berlin, 1996 Since there is no normal pagination on a web page, paragraph numbers are assigned here in lieu of that, included in brackets and placed flush right, just above the paragraph, for purposes of scholarly reference. It is now over thirty years since Richard Rorty pointed out the similarities between Wittgenstein's Philosophical Investigations (1953) and the philosophical framework of Charles S. Peirce (1839-1914), the American logician who was the founder of pragmatism. The view put forward by Rorty is that Peirce had envisaged and repudiated positivist empiricism fifty years earlier, and had developed a set of insights and a philosophical mood very similar to those of contemporary philosophers working under the influence of the later Wittgenstein. The affinity between Peirce's philosophy and the more recent tendency born of the rejection of the Tractatus and the positivism of the Vienna Circle, gave rise to an expectation that the study of Peircean pragmatism and the writings of the later Wittgenstein in ever closer comparison would shed increasing light on both philosophers' work (Rorty 1961).

Ludwig Wittgenstein

Ludwig Wittgenstein
Born 26th. April, 1889, in Vienna; died 29th. April, 1951, in Cambridge, Britain.
Austrian-British philosopher. His full name was Ludwig Joseph Johann Wittgenstein. He was the youngest of eight children in a wealthy secular Jewish family in Vienna. His father was an industrialist. Ludwig Wittgenstein was educated privately at home until the age of fourteen. He then concentrated on mathematics and science at school. He was a contemporary of Adolf Hitler at a school in Linz and they appear in the same school photograph. The extent to which they may have known each other is not clear. Ludwig Wittgenstein went on to study engineering at Berlin, and he then moved to Britain at the age of nineteen to study aeronautics at the University of Manchester (1908-11) where he designed a jet reaction propeller. Developing more interest in mathematics and then mathematical logic he transferred to Cambridge where he took courses in 1912-13 given by Bertrand Russell (1872-1970). In November 1912, on the recommendation of fellow student John Maynard Keynes , he was elected to the elite secret society known as the Apostles which at that time was suffused with a homoerotic atmosphere, but he did not appear comfortable and stopped attending meetings.

Introduzione alla filosofia di Ernesto Riva
Ludwig Wittgenstein
LUDWIG WITTGENSTEIN (1889-1951)

Wittgenstein, Ludwig
Wittgenstein, Ludwig (Josef Johann) (b. April 26, 1889, Viennad. April 29, 1951, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, Eng.), Austrian-born English philosopher, who was one of the most influential figures in British philosophy during the second quarter of the 20th century and who produced two original and influential systems of philosophical thoughthis logical theories and later his philosophy of language.
Early life through World War I.
Bertrand Russell's book The Principles of Mathematics (1903) had a decisive influence on him. Abandoning his engineering studies at Manchester in 1911, he went to Cambridge to study with Russell. He progressed rapidly in mathematical logic ; according to Russell, he "soon knew all that I had to teach." Russell remarked that getting to know Wittgenstein was "one of the most exciting intellectual adventures" of his life. Wittgenstein, he said, had "fire and penetration and intellectual purity to a quite extraordinary degree." Wittgenstein remained at Cambridge through most of 1913, working with unrelenting intensity at problems in and about logic and engaging in prolonged discussions with Russell. He then went to Skjolden, Nor., where he lived in seclusion, working hard at logic. Upon the outbreak of World War I, Wittgenstein enlisted in the Austrian army, serving first on a river vessel and later in an artillery workshop. In 1916 he served in a howitzer regiment on the Russian front as an artillery observer, winning several decorations for bravery. He was then sent to be trained as an artillery officer, was commissioned, and continued to serve on the eastern front until 1918, when he was transferred to a mountain artillery regiment on the Italian front.

Early Life and Education Born Ludwig Josef Johann Wittgenstein in Vienna on April 26, 1889, he was the youngest of eight children raised in a wealthy and cultured Jewish family. Initially educated privately at home, at the age of 14 he began attending a school in Linz, Austria that specialized in mathematics and natural science.
