Green, Sellars, and Feyerabend were right to insist that experience without a descriptive vocabulary is blind, and thus incapable of providing a criterion for choice among alternative conceptual repertoires. Presumably van Fraassen would say that the emotions which were indispensable to effecting conversion from Catholicism to Protestantism were of the same sort as those that facilitated the switch from Aristotelian to Galilean descriptions of motion. Brief Course Description Adam Grobler: Modes of Justification in Science The course is designed to bring closer some debates which run rather separately in two branches of philosophy: epistemology and methodology. These are the question of the nature of epistemic justification or warrant, on the one hand, and the question of the rational choice of a scientific theory, on the other. Concerning the latter, one can distinguish three major approaches: inductivism, falsificationism, and abductivism (to baptize so the approach that involves the principle of inference to the best explanation, IBE for short). Before considering their relative merits (or shortcomings, rather), they will be said to overemphasize one mode of justification at the expense of others. That there is a need to distinguish different modes of justification can be seen in an attempt to identify the source of some well-known paradoxes, including the transitivity of confirmation and Gettier-like examples. It will be suggested that those paradoxes can be resolved by separating the inductive and the deductive justification. Next, the limitations of the inductivist methodology will be discussed. I.a., one serious problem for the Bayesian, e.g., is that, due to theory-impregnation, any choice of probability distribution is relative to background knowledge. Consequently, probability considerations will be said to be applicable only to estimating the (theory-relative) reliability of singular predictions rather than universal statements (hypotheses or theories).

Bas C. van Fraassen, one of the world's foremost contributors to philosophical logic and the philosophy of science, in his Terry Lectures undertakes a fresh consideration of these questions and offers a program for renewal of the empiricist tradition. The empiricist tradition is not and could not be defined by common doctrines, but embodies a certain stance in philosophy, van Fraassen says. This stance is displayed first of all in a searing, recurrent critique of metaphysics, and second in a focus on experience that requires a voluntarist view of belief and opinion. Taking the work of Hilary Kornblith and Brian Ellis as a point of departure, it presents a realist solution to the Humean problem of induction, which is based on a scientific essentialist interpretation of the principle of the uniformity of nature. More specifically, it is argued that use of inductive inference in science is rationally justified because of the existence of real, natural kinds of things, which are characterized as such by the essential properties which all members of a kind necessarily possess in common. The proposed response to inductive scepticism combines the insights of epistemic naturalism with a metaphysical outlook that is due to s cientific realism.
