LOIS ET SYMETRIES Paris : Vrin – Par Nazim Fatès FatesNazim@aol.com Mars 2000
Introduction

Worksheet: Against Scientific Realism Inspirational Thought for the Day: "[I]ncest is not immoral, for touching your mother's big toe with your little finger is not
immoral, and all the rest differs only by degree."
Sextus Empiricus, as reported by Bas van Fraassen The Big Issues: Do scientific theories provide a true account of the world? If we accept scientific theories as true, must we believe that the entities they postulate really exist? In Particular: Does acceptance of a scientific theory entail commitment to the truth of its theoretical claims? What is "scientific realism," and what are the chief arguments against it? Can the success of science be explained without being realists about theories and the entities they postulate? Does the success of our theories count as evidence for realism? Reading: "Arguments Concerning Scientific Realism," by Bas C. van Fraassen (pp. 1064-1087). Key Concepts: scientific realism; constructive empiricism; empirical adequacy; observable-unobservable distinction; inference to the best explanation; Directions: Answer any three of the following questions

0. Introduction.
In front of me on the table sits a rectangular, chromium-plated metal frame. Suspended on very thin nylon threads hang 6 identical stainless steel balls, nicely in a row. I lift the leftmost ball 2 centimeters, and let it go. The ball falls back in place, hits its neighbor, and seemingly instantaneously the ball on the right end of the chain jumps up. The four balls in the middle seem not to have moved at all. The rightmost ball falls back, and for the next five minutes the first and the last ball repeat their alternating collisions with a periodic clicking sound. Someone asks: ‘why does the last ball gets almost to the same height as the first ball?” Many answers come into my mind:
