Corrections "Traffic" Steven Soderbergh, the director of "Out of Sight" and "Erin Brockovich," returns with a blistering look at our nation's hypocritical and useless war on drugs. By Charles Taylor The anticipation surrounding "Traffic" is the sheer eagerness to see what Steven Soderbergh will do next. The critical acclaim that greeted "Out of Sight" and "The Limey" wasn't matched by popular acclaim until "Erin Brockovich" earlier this year. But that hat trick provided the kind of thrill that doesn't come often in movies, the thrill of accessible, intelligent, satisfying entertainment that is also genuinely exciting filmmaking. So it's no fun to report that "Traffic" is something of a disappointment, albeit one that takes more chances than most directors' successes. The film is an Americanized version of a British TV miniseries, "Traffik," directed by Simon Moore for the U.K.'s Channel 4, and I don't think there's a scene in it that doesn't demonstrate Soderbergh's ambition or innovation. The failure is sadder because "Traffic" hums with the desire to make a good, meaty, provocative movie. Its shortcomings, however, can't diminish its one genuine thrill: the thrill of someone saying in a clear voice, "It's all bullshit."

    Troubled man
How Curtis Mayfield was led from the light of optimism
by Charles Taylor On the Saturday morning during the week of the 1993 LA riots , I was driving to work, listening to WILD's soul-oldies program The Time Tunnel , when the DJ played Curtis Mayfield Panasonic radio was always playing AM Top 40. So here I was, 23 years later, driving to work, when out of the radio came the voice of what sounded like a slightly deranged preacher, impassioned yet taking his time, making sure every word sank in, and each one booming out in a deep, throbbing echo: "SISTERS! NIGGERS! WHITEYS! JEWS! CRACKERS!/DON'T WORRY, IF THERE'S HELL BELOW, WE'RE ALL GONNA GO!!" And then came a bray somewhere between a scream and the laugh of someone presiding over an inferno. It was a warm, sunny day, and my blood turned to ice water. Everything the spring weather, the nagging tension of the scenes from LA that had been playing and replaying on TV was sucked into Mayfield's song. This was Rodney King 's quavering question "Can we all just get along?" come back as mockery. Mayfield's twist on

  • "In Praise of Love" The critics are wrong: Jean-Luc Godard has absolutely nothing left to say and this passionless phony comeback proves it. By Charles Taylor Some years ago a friend of mine said that the people who claimed that the new Jean-Luc Godard movie was a return to form were exactly the same people who claimed every new Dylan album was as good as his '60s work. Well, Dylan has been making terrific records again for the past 10 years. What's Godard's excuse? In some critical circles there's been a growing belief that Godard's post-"Weekend" work is just as vital, if not superior, to his initial '60s burst. But anyone who's been lured to any of his "comebacks" and been disappointed can be forgiven for being suspicious. The question to be asked of the laudatory word from Cannes and New York is, Can 50 Godard fans be wrong? And the unfortunate answer is yes.

  • "One Hour Photo" Robin Williams as a superstore psycho? Kill me already. By Charles Taylor Do the people who make movies about the sterility of American middle-class life ever actually go to the places that are featured in their films? Much of "One Hour Photo" (like "Eight Legged Freaks," the title is another victim of the hyphen bandit) takes place inside a cavernous discount superstore. The place we see is sterile, blindingly white and arranged with precision. Muzak keeps the atmosphere and the shoppers in a near-narcotic state. All ambient noise has seemingly been sucked out. But that wouldn't suit the purposes of writer-director Mark Romanek (previously known for his music videos for Madonna and Nine Inch Nails), who wants to show that Americans are living in a zombified wasteland of consumer-generated fantasies because they have no identity of their own, or some such drivel. "One Hour Photo" is an art-house horror movie, and like most art-house versions of genre films, all the vitality and juice of genre conventions have been sucked right out. The irony of the movie is that it puts you into the same torpor that's supposed to be afflicting the characters. It's a stalker flick where things like empathy or suspense or horror have not been allowed to disturb the pristine achievement of the surface.

  • Get a free Allstate quote Search our Personals ... Corrections "Memento" Backwards told is thriller noir-art empty ultimately but compelling and intriguing this. By Charles Taylor In the climax of the art-noir "Memento," Guy Pearce, as a man suffering short-term memory loss investigating the murder of his wife, kills Joe Pantoliano, playing his assistant, after coming to believe that Pantoliano is the real killer. Now before you howl that I've given the movie away I should tell you that all I've done is describe the first two or three minutes. The climax, you see, comes at the beginning, and that I can reveal it without having to worry about spoiling anything should give you an idea of just how much emotional involvement you can expect watching it. Like Harold Pinter's "Betrayal" and Atom Egoyan's "Exotica," Christopher Nolan's "Memento" is told backwards, from end to beginning. There's no denying its cleverness. It's probably the cleverest use yet of that essentially stupid device. I've heard all sorts of arguments for reverse storytelling, the most frequent being that it allows you to watch a scene and the interactions of the characters without any preconceptions. I don't buy it. There's something basically nonsensical about asking an audience to watch a scene without any of the background information or emotional history that would allow them to respond to what's going on. It might be wonderful for people who like to come in on the middle of movies, and it's a great way of discussing "tropes" and what have you, but as a way of telling a story it's a bust. "Memento" has gotten extraordinary advance reviews, and part of that praise is due no doubt to its being a puzzle movie. From "Last Year in Marienbad" on, puzzle movies have almost always been presumed to be hiding great depths. But by the time "Memento" disappears up its own existence, you might suspect that it's told backwards because telling it forwards would tip us off much sooner that it doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

  • Get a free Allstate quote Search our Personals ... Corrections "Judy Berlin" First-time writer-director Eric Mendelsohn offers an unfashionably affectionate look at suburban angst. Edie Falco from "the Sopranos" stars. By Charles Taylor J udy Berlin," the debut from writer-director Eric Mendelsohn, recalls Jean Renoir's remark that there is no realism in American movies, but something better: great truth. Within its modest scale, Mendelsohn's grave and fanciful film is an almost perfectly realized poetic vision of people who continue in their everyday existence certain that life in a larger sense has passed them by. It is also a very unfashionable movie for a young filmmaker to make right now. In the past few years, the suburbs have reemerged as the favorite whipping boy of the hipoisie, from the adolescent temper tantrum of "Happiness" to the wolf-in-sheep's-clothing contempt of the sterile objet d'art "American Beauty."
