22. THE MEANING OF JUNETEENTH--FREEDOM
An article by Dr. charles taylor about what Juneteenth is, its history, and why it should be celebrated.

THE BLACK CHURCH and JUNETEENTH
Dr. Charles Taylor, author JUNETEENTH: A CELEBRATION OF FREEDOM
Back to home page WHAT IS JUNETEENTH?
Juneteenth or June 19, 1865, is considered the date when the last slaves in America were freed. Although the rumors of freedom were widespread prior to this, actual emancipation did not come until General Gordon Granger rode into Galveston, Texas and issued General Order No. 3, on June 19, almost two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.
BUT DIDN'T THE EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION FREE THE ENSLAVED?
President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on September 22, 1862, notifying the states in rebellion against the Union that if they did not cease their rebellion and return to the Union by January 1, 1863, he would declare their slaves forever free. Neeedless to say, the proclamation was ignored by those states that seceded from the Union. Futhermore, the proclamation did not apply to those slave-holding states that did not rebel against the Union. As a result about 8000,000 slaves were unaffected by the provisions of the proclamation. It would take a civil war to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation and the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution to formally outlaw slavery in the United States.
WHEN IS JUNETEENTH CELEBRATED?

Taylor, who has been accused by human rights groups of masterminding regional conflicts, was indicted in June by a U.N.-backed war crimes court in neighboring Sierra Leone on charges he armed and trained rebels in exchange for diamonds. During the country's 10 years of civil war, an estimated 50,000 people died. According to Amnesty International, Sierra Leone's civil war "was characterized by some of the worst abuses known: widespread deliberate and arbitrary killings of civilians, torture, including rape and deliberate amputation of limbs, and abduction and forced recruitment of large numbers of people, including children."

PARIS, France (CNN) Interpol has issued a notice for the arrest of former Liberian President Charles Taylor, warning that he "may be dangerous." The Red Notice was issued at the request of the Special Court for Sierra Leone, which has indicted Taylor on charges of crimes against humanity, Geneva Convention violations, and other charges. Taylor is suspects of training rebels in Sierra Leone in exchange for diamonds. The rebels engaged in torture, mutilation, rape and abduction and killed thousands of civilians. After fierce fighting this summer between government forces and anti-Taylor rebels and intervention by West African diplomats, the longtime West African leader resigned from the Liberian presidency on August 11 and went to Nigeria, where he was given asylum. Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo said last month he would "convince" ousted Taylor to return home to face war crimes charges if authorities in his homeland or neighboring Sierra Leone ask. (

Source: History of Boone County, Indiana, by Hon. L.M. Crist, 1914. CHARLES A. TAYLOR The farmer is so accustomed to having advice handed him on a
silver platter that to presume to speak in his own behalf does violence to custom and
perhaps borders on impudence hardly tolerated in the society of industry, but he is
nevertheless a potent factor in agriculture, and his viewpoint, right or wrong, must be
reckoned with by those who deal with the subject. Dame Nature is a fickle goddess, and
men sometimes play false and lose with her, but the farmer knows that prosperity will
never sit idly beside him. It will come only as a result of intelligent toil and the application
of sound business methods. The city man, as a rule, does not understand the farmer, and
neither does he fully comprehend his problems. This is often true of state and national law
makers as well. It is quite a luxury to think that one is right and very human, but error is
always expensive to those who bear the burden, and in this case it is the farmerfor those who scheme seldom plow.

Arto Laitinen (1995): Evaluative frameworks and rationality http://www.cc.jyu.fi/~rakahu/kirjat/ARTO.html] Preface After the publication of The Structure of Scientific Revolutions by Thomas S. Kuhn, we have gradually learnt to endorse the view that universal standards of rationality do not exist, even in science. All the standards of rationality are linked to the rival and incommensurable paradigms. And what applies to science, applies to morality as well: there are no ahistorical, acultural standards which would objectively determine what is good, right, or honourable. The lack of universal standards seems to render the idea of rational justification of scientific paradigms and of moral precepts impossible. Thus, our options seem to be either moral subjectivism and a relativist "anything goes"-view in science or a conservative defence of whatever views and standards we happen to have at the moment.

His parents died while he was young, and he was reared by an uncle. Taylor immigrated to the United States in 1828, and from New York City he moved to Nacogdoches where he established a mercantile business. Taylor participated in the battle of Nacogdoches qv and represented Nacogdoches in the Convention of 1832. qv In 1833 he moved to San Augustine, where he was elected alcalde on January 1, 1834. In summer 1834 he returned to Nacogdoches, and on April 25, 1835, he was appointed land commissioner for San Augustine and issued land titles until the Texas Revolution qv began. He was one of the four representatives from Nacogdoches at the Convention of 1836 qv and signed the Texas Declaration of Independence. Taylor left Texas after he signed the Declaration of Independence and stayed in Louisiana until the revolution was over. Two of his children died during this time. He was appointed chief justice of Nacogdoches County on December 20, 1836. In November 1838 he was nominated by President Sam Houston

The morality police
Our hysterical attempts to shield kids from images of sex and violence are stunting young lives and trapping us all in a Big Lie.
By Charles Taylor June 11, 2001 I felt as if I had been asked to justify why water had to be wet. Here was someone who depended for his living on the right to free speech, who wrote as an adult for other adults, who was advocating the false assumption that lies at the core of the censorious impulse: Children need to be protected from vulgarity and obscenity. At the heart of that argument is the belief that society should be remade for everyone, not just children. Basically, my friend was arguing that all adult discourse should be rendered suitable for kids, that entertainment or writing specifically intended for adults is somehow dangerous and that, as journalists, we should all be required to adhere to a phony "family newspaper" standard. He didn't come out and say that, of course. He fell back on the protection-of-innocence arguments that censors have used for years and that courts have upheld. There's an understandable impulse behind the desire to protect children, an awareness of their physical fragility, a wish for them to be able to enjoy their childhood and a frustrating sense that out in the world dangers await them that we are powerless to stop. But too often we have lost the ability to distinguish between what's inappropriate for kids and what is actually harmful to them. And, acting on fear and suspicion and assumption, we have, with the best of intentions, created situations that are potentially more harmful to kids and teens than what we want to protect them from.

  • By Charles Taylor "Great Expectations." It shouldn't, though. Both of those films were adaptations of wonderful books, Francis Hodgson Burnett's children's classic, and the Charles Dickens novel (which had been famously filmed by David Lean in 1946). What was striking about the two films was their atmosphere of rich sensuality. "A Little Princess" hummed with its young heroine's belief in the power of her imagination, the thing that saves her from cruel treatment during her sojourn in a girls' school. In one scene, she and the young black maid she's befriended wake in their shabby attic bedroom to discover that, while they slept, a rich man's servant has transformed it into a palace of silks and canopies, with plush robes and slippers and mouthwatering food awaiting them. It's the moment of deliverance that occurs in all great fairy tales turned into a catalog of pleasures, the two girls like miniature rajahs basking in their sudden good fortune.
