SAINT EDITH STEIN
SAINT EDITH STEIN (1891-1941), Sister Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, was born into a Jewish family at Breslau, then a German town, now in Poland. With a hunger for truth she studied philosophy and after gaining a Doctorate summa cum laude (literally, with highest praise) she embarked on an academic career. A period of atheism was followed by a search ending in her conversion to Roman Catholicism in 1922 after reading the life of St Teresa. At the same time she maintained a lifelong love for her Jewish heritage and people. Until Hitler and the Nazis came to power in Germany she exercised a very active apostolate of service to the Church: speaking, writing and teaching on matters philosophical, theological and feminist. Her apostolic zeal took a new direction in 1933 when she entered the Carmel at Cologne taking the name Teresa Benedicta of the Cross. Prayer now became her sole work for the Church and for her suffering Jewish people. For her safety she was later transferred to the Dutch Carmel of Echt. There she, with other converts from Judaism, was arrested by the Nazis in retaliation for the Dutch bishops outspoken condemnation of anti-Semitism. As she left her Carmel for the gas chambers of Auschwitz she said: 'I am going for my people'. She died there in August 1941. Her feast day is kept on 9 August. (by Pope John Paul II)

116. Rabbi's Corner: Edith Stein - Jewish Saint?
edith stein Jewish Saint? It is clear to me that edith stein was put to death because she was a Jew and not as related to her religious faith.
http://www.shirhadash.org/rabbi/981023-edithstein.html
Edith Stein - Jewish Saint?
October 23, 1998 Rabbi Melanie Aron While I know many Jews who have rejected their religious upbringing and live a totally secular life, I am personally acquainted with only three Jews who have actually formally converted to Christianity. I believe this is a reflection of the time and place in which I live. Had I been born in Europe, 150, 100 or even 50 years ago, it is very likely that I would have known many Jews who chose to convert to Christianity. Some would have made that choice out of religious conviction: others because, in the words of one famous convert of the period, it is better to be a Christian university professor than a Jewish melaamed. In addition to the practical advantages of accepting the religion of one's country of residence, Judaism was considered by thinking people of the time, to be backwards and medieval, a part of history, while Christianity was the religion of the enlightenment and the future. For American Jews living in the second half of the 20th century, this is all very foreign. We have no sense of Judaism as a disability, nor any need to become Christian in order to be accepted into our community. Few of us consider Christianity more rational than Judaism, and if we seek spirituality outside our own religion, we are more likely to look to the east. In addition, many of us have benefited from a formal Jewish education not often afforded to women, nor to the children of highly assimilated households a century ago. We also have had a better shot at being exposed to a committed but modern practice of Judaism.

St. Edith Stein: Martyr for Truth By Robert Royal
Special to the HERALD
Following is third in a series of articles by Robert Royal, author of the soon-to-be released book Catholic Martyrs of the 20th Century. It is a hopeful sign, then, is that one 20th-century martyr made an extraordinary journey through modern uncertainties, and not only embraced, but was willing to die for the truth of the Catholic Faith. Edith Stein was born to a well-off Jewish family in Breslau, Germany. Her father died when she was very young, and her mother was a very devout Jew and powerful woman. Edith early showed exceptional intelligence and, when few women pursued higher education, enrolled at the university. Along the way, she had lost her childhood Jewish faith, but her studies were to lead her to quite an unexpected rediscovery of God. She was interested in psychology, thinking it would help her understand life. But the psychology being taught was too mechanical and superficial to satisfy her active mind. Even in her early adulthood, she sensed that the human mind and spirit could not be explained by psychological methods. She felt something deeper in herself and wanted to know more about it. By chance, she stumbled on the great modern philosopher Edmund Husserl. Husserl created a philosophical method, which Karol Woytyla also studied and wrote about extensively before he became pope. The method is called phenomenology, but behind this sophisticated name lay a very simple idea. When we think about the world, said Husserl, we have to be aware of all the phenomena, all the things that present themselves to us. This might seem obvious. But Husserl was trying to counteract some of the blinders that modern philosophy had acquired.

118. Edith Stein, Racism And The Church.
edith stein is now a RC saint, but was shebetrayed to the Nazis by her own Church? edith stein, Racism and the Church. edith stein
http://www.anti-racism.supanet.com/rac/stein.htm
Edith Stein, Racism and the Church
Edith Stein was a Roman Catholic convert from a Jewish background. Recently she was canonised by the Roman Catholic Church. However, there is an interesting footnote to her story. This is the possibility that she was betray to the Nazis (albeit unwittingly) by the very same Church that has now made her a saint. The extent of Church collaboration with the Nazis in tracking down "non-Aryans" (i.e. "racial Jews") is not generally appreciated. Thus:- "Henceforth anyone applying for government employment - and soon for various other positions as well - had to submit proof that he was not a Jew. Since prior to 1874-1876 births had been registered only by the churches, the latter were asked to help in determining who was or was not fully Aryan, for under Nazi law this depended on the racial (i.e., religious) status of the parents and grandparents. The Church co-operated as a matter of course, complaining only that priests already overburdened with work were not receiving compensation for this special service to the state. The very question of whether the Church should lend its help to the Nazi state in sorting out people of Jewish descent was never debated. ... And the co-operation of the Church in this matter continued right through the war years, when the price of being Jewish was no longer dismissal from a government job and loss of livelihood, but deportation and outright physical destruction" (1). Edith Stein was born October 12, 1891 in Breslau, Germany (now Wroclaw, Poland). The births of her parents and grandparent thus fall within the time frame when the Church was the only registrar of births. Edith Stein renounced Judaism and became an atheist in 1904. She was later baptised into the Roman Catholic Church on 1st January, 1922. In 1932 she became a lecturer at the Institute of Pedagogy at Munster. However, she was forced to resign her post the following year (1933) due to antisemitic legislation passed by the Nazis. Under Nazi "race" legislation and despite the fact that she had been a self-identifing devout Roman Catholic for some 11 years and an atheist before that, Edith Stein was classified as a "Jew" (i.e. a "non-Aryan"). To appreciate fully the legislative background to this seemingly irrational decision you might now wish to briefly review the relevant legislation in
