From a Pentecost Novena by St Theresa Benedicta of the Cross (Edith Stein) 1. Who are you, sweet light, that fills me
And illumines the darkness of my heart You lead me like a mother's hand, And should you let go of me, I would not know how to take another step. You are the space That embraces my being and buries it in yourself. Away from you it sinks into the abyss Of nothingness, from which you raised it to the light. You, nearer to me than I to myself And more interior than my most interior And still impalpable and intangible And beyond any name: Holy Spirit eternal love! 2. Are you not the sweet manna That from the Son's heart Overflows into my heart The food of angels and the blessed? He who raised himself from death to life, He has also awakened me to new life From the sleep of death. And he gives me new life from day to day, And at some time his fullness is to stream through me, Life of your life indeed, you yourself: Holy Spirit eternal life! 3. Are you the ray That flashes down from the eternal Judge's throne And breaks into the night of the soul That had never known itself?

SPIRITUALITY OF THE CHRISTIAN WOMAN. edith stein. A discerning young girl recently asked me, Why is it that at this time so much
http://www.ewtn.com/library/THEOLOGY/SPIRWOM.HTM
SPIRITUALITY OF THE CHRISTIAN WOMAN Edith Stein A discerning young girl recently asked me, "Why is it that at this time so much is being said, even by men, about the nature and vocation of women?" It is astonishing how this topic is constantly being taken up by various parties, and how differently it is being treated. Leading intellectuals are painting a shining ideal of feminine nature, and they are hoping that realization of this ideal will be the cure for all contemporary ailments and needs. At the same time, in the literature of the present and of the last decades, we see woman presented again and again as the demon of the abyss. A great responsibility is being laid upon us by both sides. We are being obliged to consider the significance of woman and her existence as a problem. We cannot evade the question as to what we are and what we should be. And it is not only the reflective intellect which faces us with this question; life itself has made our existence problematic. An evolution which was sensed in advance by some, wanted and worked for by few, and one which surprised most people entirely, has torn women out of the well enclosed realm of the home and out of a matter-of-course kind of life and has suddenly plunged them into the most manifold alien situations and undreamt of problems. We have been thrown into the river, and we must swim. But when our strength threatens to give out, we try to reach at least the shore for safety. We would like to think through the question of whether we should go on; and if we should go on, what we should do so that we will not drown. We would like to scrutinize the direction of the current by taking into account, one against the other, its strength and our own powers and possibilities of movement.

At an open-air ceremony in the Cologne soccer stadium on May 1, 1987, Pope John Paul II beatified Edith Stein, that is, he declared her worthy of public veneration as a genuinely holy, or blessed, person. In Rome on Oct. 11, the Pope will canonize Edith Stein, who was known in the Carmelite order as Sister Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, proclaiming her a saint. In the following essay, Steven Payne, O.C.D., provides an overview of the new saint's life and reflections upon certain aspects of its significance. Father Payne is the prior of the Discalced Carmelite monastery in Washington, D.C., and an instructor at the Washington Theological Union. He is also editor in chief of the Institute of Carmelite Studies Publications, which includes among its current projects the publication of English translations of the collected works of Edith Stein. This article is based on a homily the author gave at the Baltimore Carmel on Aug. 9. THE CANONIZATION OF Edith Stein will no doubt bring, along with further arguments over her status as a martyr, a growing chorus of praise for her remarkable achievements. Yet despite the accolades, we know that her life could hardly be considered a success story by any ordinary standards. Perhaps it is her very failures that bring her closer to us.

Through her passionate study of philosophy she searched after truth and found it in reading the autobiography of St Teresa of Jesus. In 1922 she was baptised a Catholic and in 1933 she entered the Carmel of Cologne where she took the name Teresa Benedicta of the Cross. She was gassed and cremated at Auschwitz on August 9, 1942, during the Nazi persecution and died a martyr for the Christian faith after having offered her holocaust for the people of Israel. A woman of singular intelligence and learning, she left behind a body of writing notable for its doctrinal richness and profound spirituality. She was beatified by Pope John Paul II at Cologne on May 1, 1987, and canonized at Rome twelve years later. Prayer Lord, God of our fathers

St. Edith Stein: Martyr for Truth ROBERT ROYAL St. Edith Stein
It is a hopeful sign, then, is that one 20th-century martyr made an extraordinary journey through modern uncertainties, and not only embraced, but was willing to die for the truth of the Catholic Faith. Edith Stein was born to a well-off Jewish family in Breslau, Germany. Her father died when she was very young, and her mother was a very devout Jew and powerful woman. Edith early showed exceptional intelligence and, when few women pursued higher education, enrolled at the university. Along the way, she had lost her childhood Jewish faith, but her studies were to lead her to quite an unexpected rediscovery of God. She was interested in psychology, thinking it would help her understand life. But the psychology being taught was too mechanical and superficial to satisfy her active mind. Even in her early adulthood, she sensed that the human mind and spirit could not be explained by psychological methods. She felt something deeper in herself and wanted to know more about it. By chance, she stumbled on the great modern philosopher Edmund Husserl. Husserl created a philosophical method, which Karol Woytyla also studied and wrote about extensively before he became pope. The method is called phenomenology, but behind this sophisticated name lay a very simple idea. When we think about the world, said Husserl, we have to be aware of all the phenomena, all the things that present themselves to us. This might seem obvious. But Husserl was trying to counteract some of the blinders that modern philosophy had acquired.
