Herbert Spencer
Andrew Carnegie, already a titan of the business world, was sitting with friends on the moors of Scotland when the group took up the question of which author they would take with them if stranded on a deserted island. One said Shakespeare, another chose Dante. Carnegie didn't hesitate. "Herbert Spencer," he said.
Of all the writers that Carnegie read and studied throughout his life, he said that the English philosopher Herbert Spencer was the one who influenced him most. Spencer's writings provided the philosophical justification for Carnegie's unabashed pursuit of personal riches in the world of business, freeing him from the moral reservations about financial acquisition that he had inherited from his egalitarian Scottish relatives.
In his "Autobiography," Carnegie wrote about the dramatic effect of reading both the naturalist Charles Darwin and Spencer.
"I remember that light came as in a flood and all was clear," Carnegie wrote. "Not only had I got rid of theology and the supernatural, but I had found the truth of evolution. 'All is well since all grows better' became my motto, my true source of comfort."
Spencer adapted Charles Darwin's notion of natural selection and applied the theory to human society in a philosophy that became known as "Social Darwinism." It was Spencer who coined the term "survival of the fittest," using it to apply to the fate of rich and poor in a laissez faire capitalist society. Spencer argued that there was nothing unnatural and therefore wrong with competing and then rising to the top in a cut- throat capitalist world.

Herbert Spencer quote, page 570 of Big Book Bob S., tells me that he spent some time in the archives during the convention looking at copies of the various editions of the Big Book. He came up with this interesting bit of information. The Big Book quote by Herbert Spencer which is now on page 570 was at first included in a story by Ray C. (Campbell?) entitled: "An Artist's Concept."

Tear without loss in upper margin of title neatly repaired. Contemporary green half morocco, bookplates. Second edition, greatly enlarged from the first. In the intervening years theories of evolution had been proposed and generally accepted, and this edition was "harmonized" with those theories. "The Principles of Psychology (1855) was an important and original work, a real milestone in the history of the subject, marking its transition from a heavily epistemological phase to one in which it was closely dependent on physiology. In it Spencer paved the way for Wundt, William James, and Pavlov..." (DSB). This item is listed on Bibliopoly by Nigel Phillips ; click here for further details.

USE AND BEAUTY Herbert Spencer(1852); from The Works, vol 14 ; 1966 Osnabrueck In one of his essays, Emerson remarks, that what Nature at one time provides for use, she afterwards turns to ornament; and he cites in illustration the structure of a sea-shell, in which the parts that have for a while formed the mouth are at the next season of growth left behind, and become decorative nodes and spines.
Ignoring the implied teleology, which does not here concern us, it has often occurred to me that this same remark might be extended to the progress of Humanity. Here, too, appliances of one era serve as embellishments to the next. Equally in institutions, creeds, customs, and superstitions, we may trace this evolution of beauty out of what was once purely utilitarian.
Ruined castles afford obvious instances of this metamorphosis of the useful into the beautiful. To feudal barons and their retainers, security was the chief, if not the only end, sought in choosing the sites and styles of their strongholds. Probably they aimed as little at the picturesque as do the builders of cheap brick houses in our modern towns. Yet what were erected for shelter and safety, and what in those early days fulfilled an important function in the social economy, have now assumed a purely ornamental character. They serve as scenes for picnic; pictures of them decorate our drawing-rooms; and each supplies its surrounding districts with legends for Christmas Eve.
On following out the train of thought suggested by this last illustration, we may see that not only do the material exuviae of the past social states become the ornaments of our landscapes; but that past habits, manners, and arrangements, serve as ornamental elements in our literature. The tyrannies which, to the serfs who bore them, were harsh and dreary facts; the feuds which, to those who took part in them, were very practical life-and-death affairs; the mailed, moated, sentinelled security which was irksome to nobles who needed it; the imprisonments, and tortures, and escapes, which were stern and quite prosaic realities to all concerned in them; have become to us material for romantic tales-material which, when woven into Ivanhoes and Marmions, serves for amusement on leisure hours, and becomes poetic by contrast with our daily lives.

Contents Preface Introduction ... Bibliography HERBERT SPENCER: PHRENOLOGY, EVOLUTIONARY ASSOCIATIONISM, AND CEREBRAL LOCALIZATION It is very satisfactory to see how you and Bain, each in his own way, have succeeded in affiliating the conscious operations of the mind to the primary unconscious organic actions of the nerves, thus filling up the most serious lacuna and removing the chief difficulty in the association psychology. John Stuart Mill, 1864. To Spencer is certainly due the immense credit of having been the first to see in evolution an absolutely universal principle. Add this sleuth-hound scent for what he was after, and his untiring pertinacity, to his priority in perceiving the one great truth, and you fully justify the popular estimate of him as one of the world's geniuses, in spite of the fact that the 'temperament' of genius, so called, seems to have been so lacking in him. William James, 1904.

SCHED A
PERSONAGGI HERBERT SPENCER
Principles of Biology (Principi di biologia, 1864-1867)
