V Congress of the Association of Space Explorers
Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
November 11-15, 1989
Commemorative Poster This poster commemorates the 5th Planetary Congress of the Association of Space Explorers. The Congress took place November 11-15, 1989 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Bearing the authentic and original signatures of fifty-one of the participating astronauts from eleven nations, it is part of a series of limited Collector's Edition posters that have been produced and signed at each ASE Congress since the Association was founded in 1985. One hundred and forty-seven posters were signed at the 5th Congress. The poster has two headings, the main heading in Arabic at the top, with the English and Russian displayed at the bottom. Around the periphery are printed translations of "Association of Space Explorers" in the native languages of all individuals who have flown in space. Clockwise, from upper left with Arabic at the top, they include Romanian, Dutch, Czech, German, Arabic, Italian, Hungarian, Vietnamese, Hindi, Bulgarian, Mongolian, French and Polish. The background is taken from NASA archive photo # 83 HC 213 which has been used for each set of posters in the series. The central image of the poster reflects the Congress theme "Space for Earth" and was painted by Saudi artist Prince Khaled Al-Faisal al-Saud, Governor of Asir Province. The painting depicts the traditional Arab bedouin in the natural environment he inhabits - the island Earth in the vastness of space - relying on his camel, his Saluki hunting dog and the date palm and contemplating the heavens as a source of navigation, inspiration and spiritual guidance. The image represents the natural unity that binds humanity to its surroundings.

April 9 - 1959 NASA Group - Mercury Seven - USA
The first group of American astronauts was selected for the Mercury program by NASA in April . This group. known as the "Mercury Seven", included: Scott Carpenter Gordon Cooper John Glenn Gus Grissom ... Alan Shepard and Deke Slayton . All seven were military test pilots, a requirement specified by President Eisenhower to simplify the selection process. All seven of the first group of astronauts eventually flew in space, although one, Deke Slayton, did not fly a Mercury mission due to a medical disqualification. He eventually flew on the Apollo-Soyuz mission . The other six each flew one Mercury mission. For two of these, Scott Carpenter and John Glenn, the Mercury mission was their only flight in the Apollo era (Glenn later flew on the space shuttle). Three of the Mercury astronauts, Gus Grissom, Gordon Cooper and Wally Schirra, also each flew a mission during the Gemini program. Alan Shepard did not fly a Gemini mission due to a medical disqualification, but later did fly an Apollo mission. He was the only Mercury astronaut to go to the moon. Wally Schirra also flew on Apollo, as well as Mercury and Gemini, the only astronaut to fly on all three types of spacecraft. (Gus Grissom was scheduled to fly the first Apollo flight, but died in a fire on the launch pad during training.)

Literature is News that stays News. - Ezra Pound 1885- 1972
Vladimir Sergeevich Soloviev
Vladimir Sergeevich Soloviev was a poet, philosopher, and the son of famous Russian historian Sergey Mikhailovich Soloviev. Vladimir Soloviev's work had a very strong influence on the formation of Mladosymbolist philosophy, and helped define the poetic style of A. Beliy and A. Blok's first books. The wise goddess Sofia was at the foundation of Soloviev's philosophy. In the poem "Three Meetings," which came to be quoted so often by Symbolist poets, Soloviev asserts the divine unity of the universe. He also developed a study of universal theocracy and explores the possibility of a society built on spiritual principles. The real-world development of Russia soon caused Soloviev to contemplate new ideas, such as the end of world history, the last period of world history, and the final struggle between Christ and the Antichrist. ("Three Conversations"). According to Soloviev, the highest aim of art is to form in reality the order inherent in the embodiment of "absolute beauty, or the creation of the universal spiritual body". Soloviev's verse contains nothing psychologicaly concrete, and is full with hazy, fleeting impressions.

Excerpts from "The Meaning of Love" by Vladimir Solovyov (1853-1900), taken from The Heart of Reality
p. 89
The force directing the life of humanity?which some call the universal will, and others the unconscious spirit, and which in fact is Divine Providence?without doubt manages opportunely the birth of providential people necessary for its ends, arranging in a long series of generations the necessary combinations or procreators in view of future products, not only the most proximate, but the remotest as well. pp. 94-95
Truth, as a living force that takes possession of the inner essence of man and effectively leads him out of false self-affirmation, is called love. Love, as the effective abolition of egoism, is a valid justification and redemption of individuality. ennobling, and not abolishing, individuality. p. 95
In general, the meaning of Human love is the justification and redemption individuality through the sacrifice of egoism . On this common foundation we can also resolve our special problem: to explain the meaning of sexual love. It is not without reason that sexual relations not only are called love, but also by general acknowledgment represent love, for the most part appearing as a type and ideal of every other love (see the Song of Songs and Revelation).
