Peter Singer Strikes Again
By Kathryn Jean Lopez, NR associate editor
March 5, 2001 1:15 p.m. nce an Ivy League professor is known to be a proponent of infanticide, perhaps nothing he says or writes should E-mail Kathryn Printer-Friendly Dearest Pet: On Bestiality Singer begins: But not every taboo has crumbled … Galdikas called to her companion not to be concerned, because the orangutan would not harm her, and adding, as further reassurance, that "they have a very small penis." As it happened, the orangutan lost interest before penetration took place, but the aspect of the story that struck me most forcefully was that in the eyes of someone who has lived much of her life with orangutans, to be seen by one of them as an object of sexual interest is not a cause for shock or horror. The potential violence of the orangutan's come-on may have been disturbing, but the fact that it was an orangutan making the advances was not. That may be because Galdikas understands very well that we are animals, indeed more specifically, we are great apes. And while Singer explains that a human male who has sex with hens ultimately kills the hen, he wonders if it is any "worse than what egg producers do to their hens all the time."

Taking Singer Seriously
March 14, 2001 1:15 p.m. here's a scene in the Mel Brooks movie High Anxiety in which Brooks plays a famous psychologist. Invited to give the E-mail Jonah Printer-Friendly G-File Archive keynote address at an academic conference, Brooks encounters a problem at the podium; an attendee brought his young daughters with him because he couldn't find a babysitter. Brooks's talk is on such Freudian themes as, well, a condition that begins with the letter "p" and rhymes with "Venus frenzy." He also has to mention other words, unutterable in front of young children. He's forced to use words like "woo-woo" and balloons for various female body parts. Well, you guys are hardly children, but even NRO has its limits. Hence my problem. I want to write about Peter Singer, the famously controversial professor of "human values" at Princeton University. But I don't want to overly offend (indeed, this was originally going to be a syndicated column, but my editor demurred for the sake of family newspapers everywhere. So, you've been warned).

Last Updated April 24, 2000
Welcome to the homepage of the Animal Liberation Action Group, a recognized student organization at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, USA. The group advances knowledge of animal exploitation, and seeks to end prejudice and unjustifiable discrimination against animals. Peter Singer , philosopher, author and the world's foremost Animal Liberationist, articulates the philosophy and goals of the Animal Liberation movement. A main point of this philosophy is that:
. . . the ethical principle on which human equality rests requires us to extend equal consideration to animals, too

New DOCTOR Issue No. 73 Winter 2000
    Peter Singer:
the most dangerous man on Earth?
    Andrew Gunn
Dr Andrew Gunn is a Brisbane general practitioner currently completing an MAPhil at the University of Queensland. Introduction Australian ethicist Peter Singer must have a thick skin. His recent departure from Melbourne was marked in The Age by an article titled “Good riddance to a warped philosopher”1. His appointment as professor of philosophy at Princeton University in the United States led to demonstrations and death threats. Singer (a.k.a. Professor Death2) attracts a variety of opinions. Commentary ranges from “the most dangerous man in the world”3 to “the greatest living philosopher”4 - although these two opinions are not necessarily contradictory. He is widely condemned as a “Nazi”, a distressing (but not unique) fate for a man of German/Austrian Jewish stock who lost several close relatives in the Holocaust5. This article discusses a few myths surrounding Singer’s philosophy. The philosophical differences creating divergent opinions on Singer also have important repercussions on health care. Ethics, not science, underlies many health care controversies. Peter Singer Singer has published profusely over several decades – a couple of dozen books, hundreds of articles and thousands of interviews and lectures. Nonetheless, public criticism of Singer’s work – and there is plenty of it - often focuses on the same two or three sentences plucked from the millions available. Indeed, outside philosophical forums it appears quite normal to damn Singer’s work having only read about it, rather than having read it. “I can’t recall or find the book in which he [Singer] wrote these views” wrote one medical critic recently, before using a misquote to discuss Singer6.

Controversial philosopher and professor of bioethics Peter Singer has been working in the field of 'practical ethics' for 30 years - "which means that when I began there was no such field". He was a passionate founder of the modern animal rights movement and has written on animal rights, abortion, euthanasia and the ethical implications of the global rift between rich and poor. His most recent book is Writings on an Ethical Life (Fourth Estate, £15), a collection of his most provocative writings.

Australian-born philosopher Peter Singer is frequently acknowledged as a major force in modern bio-ethics. The publication of his book Animal Liberation in 1975 is credited with launching the animal rights movement. He is currently a professor of bio-ethics at Princeton University and has taught at, among other schools, Oxford University, The University of Colorado, University of California and New York University. His Practical Ethics is one of the most widely used texts in applied ethics, and Rethinking Life and Death received the 1995 National Book Council's Banjo Award for non-fiction. Dissecting Peter Singer:
Putting the animal rights guru under a microscope
By Adrian Morrison DVM, PhD Foolish, outrageous claims against the necessity or even usefulness of animal-based research are common in animal rights literature. These are as irresponsible as they are silly because they can lead the unwary with a natural, compassionate concern for animals to contribute money to a cause actually working against the contributor's best interests. Although I believe the political leaders of the animal rights movement know better and lie deliberately, they are not the most dangerous or even the most culpable in my mind. I am bothered by the intellectuals scientists and non-scientists who have stoked the fires with gross misrepresentations of the nature and necessity of biomedical research. Indeed, the acknowledged founder and chief guru of the movement, Australian philosopher Peter Singer, played a major role in unleashing the virulent attack on researchers with his descriptions of their work in the chapter "Tools for Research" in Animal Liberation. Singer's utilitarian philosophy depends upon the demonstration that insufficient good has come from animal research to justify the pain and suffering it has caused. But two scientists, Sharon Russell and Charles Nicoll, recently reviewed "Tools for Research" and demonstrated in detail just how much Singer misrepresents research to support his thesis. Their results were published in a scientific journal, Proceedings of the Society for Experimental Biology and Medicine

Who We Are Sitemap Book Reviews The Lighter Side ... Movies Somebody once said that a philosopher's job is to interest us and to infuriate us. Enter Peter Singer. Singer's views on euthanasia and his essay on Bestiality of late have caused a furore in America and Australia. Having finally managed to track him down at an ANZFAS Conference in New Zealand recently Singer was generous with his time and opinions. Certainly the media have had a field day in portraying him as a steely-cold, cerebral philosopher without feelings, who pontificates in his Ivory Tower on other peoples' mothers. Who seemingly doesn't mind the concept of sex with nonhuman animals. However there were two broad issues that reoccurred in his lectures throughout the Conference. One theme was how to make a better world and the other was unquestionably concerned with the plight of the animals, especially factory-farmed animals. What else? He was honest, thoughtful and perhaps the biggest surprise of all, he has a well-developed sense of humour that doesn't necessarily transcribe successfully over from person to print. Does he feel betrayed by the sheer voraciousness of the attack on him from others in our Movement and from the media? You bet he does, and he's speaking about it here for the first time.

    The false philosophy
    of Peter Singer
by Jenny Teichman I In Book I of his Treatise on Human Nature Ethical Studies I n August 1991 Peter Singer published an article in The New York Review of Books Journal of Applied Philosophy . Singer, a professor of philosophy at Monash University in Victoria, Australia, and a founder of the Monash Centre for Human Bioethics, wrote these two essays partly as the result of his own recent experiences in Germany. In the essay in the Journal of Applied Philosophy Singer writes: Since 1989 I have been unable to lecture openly at universities and conferences in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Courses based on my book Practical Ethics Singer is indignant about these events. It would appear that he regards them as attacks on the freedom of expression and as personal insults to himself. Although he does not explicitly say so in the paper quoted, it seems probable that he adheres to the conventional doctrine of the sanctity of free speech. Journal of Applied Philosophy W hen Singer explained his views on euthanasia in the Journal of Applied Philosophy and The New York Review of Books he was surprisingly economical with the truth. He misrepresented the contents of his book

    Ethicist Peter Singer.
March 10, 2000. When philosopher Peter Singer was appointed Ira DeCamp Professor of Bioethics at Princeton University it set off a firestorm of protest in the University's mock tutor precincts that is only just abating. Singer has courted controversy throughout his professional career by arguing for viewpoints that when summarized seem incredible - animal rights, the voluntary donation of any income you earn over 30,000 dollars to the world's poor, and the killing of severely deformed infants. The latter view led the Archbishop of Melbourne to dub Peter Singer "Herod's Propaganda minister." The headline grabbing nature of those views obscures the fact that Peter Singer is a true professional philosopher an acknowledged scholar of Utilitarianism, a man who sees himself as applying the theories of John Stuart Mill to contemporary ethical problems. Difficult issues rigorously analyzed - Ethicist Peter Singer in the first hour of The Connection.

    Peter Singer Brief Bio
2000-2001 Terry Lectureship Peter Singer is among the most influential and most controversial moral philosophers alive. Positing a utilitarian view, he has helped shape debates worldwide concerning animal rights and the ethical dilemmas posed by new medical technologies that blur the boundaries between life and death. He has also made significant contributions to debate about international economic justice, in which he has long been interested. In his Terry lectureship he discussed ethical problems related to globalization. The overall title for his lectures was: One World: The Ethics and Politics of Globalization. The titles for his four lectures were: Ethics for One World; One Environment; One Economy; and Ethics and Politics. Professor Singer joined the University Center for Human Values at Princeton University as Ira W. DeCamp Professor of Bioethics in 1999. Founded in 1990, the Center supports teaching and research about ethical and evaluative issues in public and private life. Born in Melbourne Australia in 1946, Professor Singer was educated at the
