Best known in Scandinavia for her 1994 hit "Vem Vet," Lisa Ekdahl became one of the top Swedish pop singers of the 1990s but also records and performs straight-ahead jazz. Ekdahl's pop albums have been in Swedish, while her acoustic jazz albums have favored English-language standards. Animal Liberation at 30
By Peter Singer
AMONG THE BOOKS MENTIONED IN THIS ARTICLE Animal Rights and Wrongs by Roger Scruton London: Metro, 206 pp., $9.95 The Animal Question: Why Non-human Animals Deserve Human Rights by Paola Cavalieri, translated from the Italian by Catherine Woollard Oxford University Press, 192 pp., $22.00 Taking Animals Seriously: Mental Life and Moral Status by David DeGrazia Cambridge University Press, 314 pp., $90.00; $32.00 (paper) Dominion: The Power of Man, the Suffering of Animals, and the Call to Mercy by Matthew Scully St. Martin's, 434 pp., $27.95
The phrase "Animal Liberation" appeared in the press for the first time on the April 5, 1973, cover of The New York Review of Books . Under that heading, I discussed Animals, Men and Morals , a collection of essays on our treatment of animals, which was edited by Stanley and Roslind Godlovitch and John Harris. The article began with these words: We are familiar with Black Liberation, Gay Liberation, and a variety of other movements. With Women's Liberation some thought we had come to the end of the road. Discrimination on the basis of sex, it has been said, is the last form of discrimination that is universally accepted and practiced without pretense, even in those liberal circles which have long prided themselves on their freedom from racial discrimination. But one should always be wary of talking of "the last remaining form of discrimination."

104. A Darwinian Left For Today And Beyond, By Peter Singer

A Darwinian Left for Today and Beyond Peter Singer Excerpted from A Darwinian Left: Politics, Evolution and Cooperation , New Haven, 1999, pp. 60-63. This short book has been a sketch of the ways in which a Darwinian left would differ from the traditional left that we have come to know over the past two hundred years. In closing, I shall first draw together, in point form, some of the features that I think would distinguish a Darwinian left from previous versions of the left, both old and new; these are features that I think a Darwinian left should embrace today. Then I will cast a glance at more distant prospects. A Darwinian left would not: • Deny the existence of a human nature, nor insist that human nature is inherently good, nor that it is infinitely malleable; • Expect to end all conflict and strife between human beings, whether by political revolution, social change, or better education; • Assume that all inequalities are due to discrimination, prejudice, oppression or social conditioning. Some will be, but this cannot be assumed in every case;

Das ist zweifellos ein stichhaltiges Argument. Also habe ich Peter Singers Buch Praktische Ethik (1979), Reclam Verlag Stuttgart, 2. ALL ANIMALS ARE EQUAL
by Peter Singer Ira. W. DeCamp Professor of Bioethics, University Center for Human Values Princeton University Excerpted from Animal Rights and Human Obligations , New Jersey, 1989, pp. 148-162 www.PeterSingerLinks.com [Use this version to print] ANIMAL RIGHTS AND HUMAN OBLIGATIONS an Anthology by Tom Regan and Peter Singer other books In recent years a number of oppressed groups have campaigned vigorously for equality. The classic instance is the Black Liberation movement, which demands an end to the prejudice and discrimination that has made blacks second-class citizens. The immediate appeal of the black liberation movement and its initial, if limited, success made it a model for other oppressed groups to follow. We became familiar with liberation movements for Spanish-Americans, gay people, and a variety of other minorities. When a majority group—women—began their campaign, some thought we had come to the end of the road. Discrimination on the basis of sex, it has been said, is the last universally accepted form of discrimination, practiced without secrecy or pretense even in those liberal circles that have long prided themselves on their freedom from prejudice against racial minorities. One should always be wary of talking of "the last remaining form of discrimination." If we have learnt anything from the liberation movements, we should have learnt how difficult it is to be aware of latent prejudice in our attitudes to particular groups until this prejudice is forcefully pointed out.

BOB CORBETT'S COMMENTS ON PETER SINGER'S ANALYSIS THAT LEADS TO SPECIESISM
SINGER, PETER. ANIMAL LIBERATION. (NEW YORK: AVON BOOKS, 1975)
SPECIESISM AND INTERESTS IN PETER SINGER'S "ANIMAL LIBERATION" A Very Introductory Essay Bob Corbett
August 1999 As we begin our exploration of our relationship with animals, we come face to face with Peter Singer and his insistence that speciesism is a vice. It is important to come to know what he means by speciesism, why he regards it as a moral mistake. In order to try to clarify this I will do four things here:
  • Talk about the general range of prejudices such as racism, sexism, nationalism and others.
  • Then I will try to clarify Singer's views and how he extends the categories to include species.
  • I also want to point out that Singer's view, while tremendously important in its philosophical and practical import, is not something really new to most of us. His uncompromising SENSE of it is.
  • Lastly I will comment upon and hopefully clarify Singer's notion that the notion of equality has to do with "equality of consideration" and not of "treatment." Further, I want to deal with his notion that this "equality" is not a claim of fact, but a moral prescription. The point here is that many of us have some intuitions toward the interests of animals. They may not be dominant, and they might not be sentiments of equality, and they many not compete well with contrary interests toward humans. At the same time, we still often have some positive sentiments and intuitions toward the interests of animals. The notion that Singer will develop in ways that may well be strange and new to us, are not 100% novel. If we have a hard time grasping his view, perhaps returning to some of those personal sentiments or intuitions might be a good place to go.

    VEGETARIANISM AGAINST WORLD HUNGER
If you want to put the welfare of humanity first, you can hardly do better than become vegan. Author of Animal Liberation , Peter Singer, states that if Americans were to reduce their meat consumption by only 10 % for one year, it would free at least 12 million tons of grain for human consumption. That is enough to feed 60 million people. If Americans stopped eating grain-fed beef altogether, the whole population of India could be fed.
Instead we feed grain, corn, and soybeans to livestock. It takes up to 16 pounds of grain and soybeans to produce 1 pound of beef. Ninety to 100% of the protein, carbohydrate, and dietary fiber of grains are lost through the cycling of grain through livestock.
Help world hunger by continually learning about and eating plant foods.

How can they become so insensitive to what they are doing? Don Barnes, who spent sixteen years as a biomedical scientist experimenting on animals, and now heads the Washington, DC office of the National Anti-Vivisection Society , calls the state in which he used to do his work 'conditioned ethical blindness'. From his early years growing up on the farm, and continuing into his time as a Ph. D. student, Barnes accepted the idea that non-human animals exist to serve human purposes. As a student of psychology, he was also taught a whole new vocabulary which served to distance the experimenter from the animal. The monkeys on which he worked became 'research subjects'; the electric shocks he gave them were called 'negative reinforcement' and their vain efforts to escape were classified as 'avoidance behaviour'. As Barnes says: 'During my sixteen years in the laboratory the morality and ethics of using laboratory animals were never broached in either formal or informal meetings prior to my raising the issues during the waning days of my tenure as a vivisector'. Don Barnes is not the only one to have escaped his conditioning. In 1977 the magazine

Proving the Obvious By Lori Gruen and Peter Singer Excerpted from Animal Liberation: a Graphic Guide , London, 1987, pp. 80-81 ANIMAL LIBERATION A Graphic Guide by Lori Gruen and Peter Singer other books When presented with examples of mindless animal experiments, scientists usually claim that we, as lay-people, do not understand the importance of their work. But the fact is that, like Ulrich 's, many animal experiments are performed merely to prove the obvious. Nowhere is this more true that in experimental psychology. Among the best-known psychology experiments are those of H. F. Harlow , who in the late 1950s began a series of maternal deprivation experiments at the University of Wisconsin Primate Research Centre. The first experiments involved the separation of a baby monkey from her mother in order to study 'the nature of love'. Harlow devised fake 'monkey mothers', one made of cloth and one made of wire. Not surprisingly, all infants showed a preference for the more comfortable, cloth-covered 'mother'. Harlow concluded that comfort has a role in the formation of bonds between infants and their mothers. Harlow and his colleagues the proceeded to modify the surrogate mothers in order to produce bizarre behaviour in infant monkeys: [F]our surrogate monster mothers were created. One was a shaking mother which rocked so violently that the teeth and bones of the infant chattered in unison. The second was an air-blast mother which blew compressed air against the infant's face and body with such violence that the infant looked as if it would be denuded. The third had an embedded steel frame which, on schedule or demand, would fling forward knock the infant monkey off the mother's body. The fourth monster mother, on schedule or demand, ejected brass spikes from her ventral surface, an abominable form of maternal tenderness...

Han vann ryktbarhet genom sin bok Animal Liberation: A New Ethics for Our Treatment of Animals, vilken inspirerade den internationella Animal liberation-rörelsen. Han har också författat huvudartikeln om etik i senaste utgåvan av Encyclopaedia Britannica.
