Genesis Singer Peter Gabriel Leaves Group
Peter Gabriel has released a press statement to confirm the story that the British musical magazine New Musical Express recently printed, that the Genesis front man was indeed leaving the group. Gabriel is one of the founding members of the group alongside Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks, the group's guitarist and keyboard players respectively. The group also comprises drummer Phil Collins and guitarist Steve Hackett. No word has been released by the rest of the group as to whether they plan to continue or what plans are being made to replace on of rock's most theatrical front men. The band has recently finished a year-long tour to promote their album of last year, The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway , a double disc production that has had a lot of commercial success and critical acclaim. The band's debts, a weight around their neck since their first studio album of 1969, have now been paid off and it seems strange that Gabriel has chosen this moment to turn his back on Genesis. Some clues as to why he has left now can certainly be found in the statement released to the press. We asked

The Appointment of Professor Peter Singer
Every year Princeton appoints a number of senior scholars as new members of its tenured faculty. We look to these distinguished men and women to bring new vitality and continuing leadership to our programs of teaching and research. Some of these appointments come from our own untenured ranks, and we recruit others from outside of Princeton. In every case, we insist on someone who already is or has clear potential to be one of the leading scholars in his or her field, who is an excellent and committed teacher, and who will be a valued colleague and contributing citizen of this community over an extended period of time. Most of our appointments are uncontroversial. But every once in a while we make an appointment that is greeted with a mixture of accolades and controversy, and even some protest. Appointments like these give us an opportunity to discuss fundamental issues about a university's central purposes and core values. The appointment of Professor Peter Singer, who will join our faculty next fall as the DeCamp Professor in the University Center for Human Values, is just such a case. There is no question about Professor Singer's eminence in the field of bioethics. He began his career at Oxford University, was appointed to a professorship at his home university (Monash) in Australia at the age of 30, has served as president of the International Association of Bioethics and as editor of its official journal (

Peter Singer is now a Professor at Princeton University, USA. He was formerly Professor of Philosophy and Director of the Centre for Human Bioethics at Monash University, Melbourne, Australia. He is the author of Animal Liberation , which can be considered the Bible of the animal rights movement. Recently, he has been instrumental in the formation of the The Great Ape Project , which seeks to extend personhood and legal rights to the Geat Apes. extracts from 'In Defence of Animals': Why do we lock up chimpanzees in appalling primate research centres and use them in experiments that range from the uncomfortable to the agonising and lethal, yet would never think of doing the same to a retarded human being at a much lower mental level? The only possible answer is that the chimpanzee, no matter how bright, is not human, while the retarded human, no matter how dull, is. This is speciesism, pure and simple, and it is as indefensible as the most blatant racism. There is no ethical basis for elevating membership of one particular species into a morally crucial characteristic. From an ethical point of view, we all stand on an equal footing whether we stand on two feet, or four, or none at all. The animal liberation movement . . . is not saying that all lives are of equal worth or that all interests of humans and other animals are to be given equal weight, no matter what those interests may be. It is saying that where animals and humans have similar interests - we might take the interest in avoiding physical pain as an example, for it is an interest that humans clearly share with other animals - those interests are to be counted equally, with no automatic discount just because one of the beings is not human. A simple point, no doubt, hut nevertheless part of a far-reaching ethical revolution.

Links Peter Singer Gets A Chair By Wesley J. Smith Critique by Punkerslut [Criticizer's Notes: Written on Thursday, April 18, 2002. Finished on Friday, April 19, 2002.] Introduction Peter Singer, I believe, is a wonderful philosopher and thinker. From reading his writings, many people can easily conclude that he does not overlook points, nor is he faulty in reasoning. However, there is a following that detests Singer. Some of these individuals do not necessarily detest the ideas of Singer so much as they detest the man himself. This can clearly be seen when a group of anti-Euthanasianists picketed his lecture on Animal Rights simply because Singer has written much in defense of Euthanasia. The following essay that I am about to critique is the opinion of a person who quite clearly detests Singer. Of course, his reasons do not stand critical investigation, as I shall show. The Critique ANIMAL RIGHTS EXTREMISM AT PRINCETON Peter Singer Gets A Chair by Wesely J. Smith MOST PEOPLE KNOW THAT IT IS WRONG TO KILL BABIES . Most people understand that pigs are animals, not persons. Most people view the intentional killing of "medically incompetent" people as murder.
