25. The Sensuous Content Of Perception
An article by Romane Clark critical of wilfrid sellars' theory of perception.
http://ditext.com/clark/sense.html
Published in Hector-Neri Castaneda, ed., Action, Knowledge, and Reality: Critical Studies in Honor of Wilfrid Sellars (Indianapolis: The Bobbs-Merrill Company, 1975): pp. 109-127.
The Sensuous Content of Perception
ROMANE CLARK
Indiana University A man sees a small, bouncy, red, rubber ball. There is some one thing he has seen, but how much seeing has he done? How many perceptual acts have occurred? Adequate philosophical theories of perception should, no doubt, provide schematic characterizations, instances of which would be, or yield, answers to questions like these. In this paper I consider some aspects of Professor Sellars' views on perception, particularly with reference to the sensuous character of perception. I am only marginally concerned here with Sellars' broader philosophical themes concerning the naturalistic and materialistic bases of perception. I borrow, however, from these broader considerations his assumptions that judging (that something is the case) is best understood by analogy with overt speech, and that perceiving is a species of judging. Some jargon will be useful in developing our themes. To avoid the "success" connotations of notions like 'see', and to generalize over the range of sense modalities, I shall often speak of (psychical) agents sensuously believing that something is the case or of agents being sensuously aware of something. The ascription of sensuous beliefs to an agent does not imply that what he believes is the case; nor does saying that an agent is sensuously aware of something imply that the object of his awareness exists. These idioms will be our perceptual analogues of 'thinks that' and 'thinks of'.

Make it known on the Discussion Forum The relatively recent specialty known as Philosophy of Mind deals with questions of consciousness and how it interacts with the body and the outside world. Thus, it asks not only what mental phenomena are and what gives rise to them, but also what relationship they have to the larger physical body and the world around us. This is essentially a subspeciality of Metaphysics because it addresses the fundamental nature of a specific aspect of reality: the mind. For some, depending upon their other views on

New Haven, Connecticut Dear Wilfrid: For the first time, I have been able to read your "Empiricism and the Philosophy of Mind," which so much impressed me when I heard it exactly 5 years ago. I have been studying sections 56ff on private episodes. I liked your view and I still like it. However, I am perplexed by certain features of it. What you say about theories and models seems to me substantially sound, and the proposal to consider inner episodes as theoretical entities is very insightful. But in the way you propose it, it seems to me to do injustice to self-knowledge. You regard the basic language, the language of the model, to be behavioral language, so that my own mental states as well as yours are for me theoretical entities. Since this clearly won't do, you correctly suggest that first-person statements about thoughts acquire another role: a reportive one. This you claim on pp.188 and 189 [Sections 58-59] explains the privacy of the mental. But it is not clear how this claim is justified. (Let me say right now that following your suggestion, I argued in my Buenos Aires lectures last November that the theoretical relationship goes from a multi-personal psychological language as a "scientific" theory to a basic language in which I can talk, somewhat solipsistically and impersonally, about behavior of any body as well as about my own mental states.)

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania July 5, 1965 Dear Professor Sellars: In response to your kind offer to read through portions of the typescript of my thesis pertaining to your views on intentionality, I am sending you a copy of an introductory section to such a chapter. The enclosed typescript represents a first draft, for which I apologize, but I thought it might be useful to get any comments you might have in at the ground floor, so to speak. The section I am sending leaves off, as you will see, just at the point at which I intend to take up the question of the reducibility (or not) of semantical discourse to psychological discourse. For this reason, I have not yet discussed the problems involved with the 'means'-rubric, nor those examined in "Some Reflections on Language Games." Aside from these omissions, however, I wrote this section by way of attempting to present a general account of your position respecting mental discourse (leaving out, of course, language which exhibits what you call, in "Being and Being Known,"

33. SELLARS-MARRAS CORRESPONDENCE
Correspondence between wilfrid sellars and Ausonio Marras. Edited by Andrew Chrucky.
http://ditext.com/sellars/csm.html
Correspondence between Wilfrid Sellars and Ausonio Marras
Edited in hypertext by Andrew Chrucky Editor's note: The first letter (Jan. 3, 1972) is Sellars' initial comments on the proofs of Marras' article, "On Sellars' Linguistic Theory of Conceptual Activity," Canadian Journal of Philosophy 2 (1972-1973): 471-83. This article was published together with Sellars' reply, "Reply to Marras,": 485-93, and Marras' rejoinder, "Reply to Sellars,": 495-50.
The second letter (Nov. 25, 1975) is Sellars' commentary on a draft of Marras' "The Behaviourist Foundation of Sellars' Semantics" Dialogue 16 (1977): 664-675. In a footnote to his published version, Marras wrote: "An earlier draft of this paper was read at the Pacific Division meetings of the American Philosophical Association held at Berkeley, California, on May 27-29, 1976. I am grateful to Wilfrid Sellars and R.W. Binkeley, who provided extensive and valuable comments to the earlier draft in private correspondence. While certain alterations resulted from their comments, I doubt that I have succeeded in securing their agreement on all points."
The third letter (June 15, 1976) is Marras' reply to this second letter.

Northfield, Minnesota January 13, 1974 Dear Wilfrid, I have been traveling almost continually since leaving Atlanta, and now, as you can infer, I am out here in Minnesota learning what real cold is like. I shall return home early in February to bask in the warmth of a New England winter. Am enjoying the students here. They have a kind of enthusiasm and lack of intellectual inhibition that I don't find at Harvard. More like the students I knew at Swarthmore many years ago. I have been thinking about your APA paper ["Givenness and Explanatory Coherence," The Journal of Philosophy 70 (1973): 612-24], which seems even more profound, if that is possible, each time I reread it. It calls for a better response, and surely more of a response, than I made to it at the meeting. In fact it became clear to me there that I had misunderstood you at a critical point. I feel some despair when I ask myself whether it is really possible to get at the source of our differences if there are differences by written correspondence. An hour or so of conversation would be incomparably better. But perhaps if I try talking about the issues you will be able to see, at the very least, where I have misunderstood you.

Princeton, New Jersey Dear Gil: I have read and reread your insightful and challenging review of Science and Metaphysics , and have been accumulating notes, I won't say for a reply, but for a first attempt at rising to your closing challenge. I shall concentrate on the points you raise concerning meaning and truth, leaving to another occasion topics which, though important, do not touch the very heart of the enterprise. Thus I shall not discuss your comments on the availability and/or adequacy of concepts of thinking-out-loud and its modes as models for the construction of a theoretical framework which introduce classical thought-episodes. I certainly did not mean to imply that all the thinking of Jones' Rylean contemporaries was thinking-out-loud, but only that they did more of it than we do. Most of their thinking would be, in the terminology of my "Language as Thought and as Communication," extremely short term proximate propensities to think such and such out loud. (I thought I had made this clear in SM .) Also, I have stressed from the beginning that inner thought episodes, though construed on the model of overt speech, are not to be thought of as "words going through ones head." No verbal imagery need occur, and even when it does, the imagery is not itself the thinking, but at most a symptom of it.
