Wilfrid Sellars
Wilfrid Stalker Sellars (b. 1912, d. 1989) was a profoundly creative and synthetic thinker whose work both as a systematic philosopher and as an influential editor helped set and shape the Anglo-American philosophical agenda for over four decades. Sellars is perhaps best known for his classic 1956 essay "Empiricism and the Philosophy of Mind", a comprehensive and sophisticated critique of "the myth of the given" which played a major role in the postwar deconstruction of Cartesianism, but his published corpus of three books and more than one hundred essays includes numerous original contributions to ontology, epistemology, and the philosophies of science, language, and mind, as well as sensitive historical and exegetical studies.

Wilfrid Stalker Sellars Dates:
Born: May 20, 1912 in Ann Arbor, Michigan
Died: July 2, 1989 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Biography:
Wilfrid Sellars was an American philosopher whose methodology combined aspects of logical positivism and analytic philosophy, resulting in a radical critique of prevailing notions of human knowledge and epistemology. According to Sellars, "The aim of philosophy is to understand how things in the broadest possible sense of the term hang together in the broadest possible sense of the term." Sellars disagreed with the traditional account of knowledge as a simple line between sense data and epistemic judgements (statements of belief or knowledge). Instead, Sellars argued that knowledge is a social and linguistic affair, dependent upon things like giving reasons, making arguments, etc.

Wilfrid Sellars
Wilfrid Sellars (1912-1989) was an American philosopher of great sophistication. He was, perhaps, the first pragmatist to take on English analytic philosophy and logical positivism His most famous work is the lengthy and difficult paper, "Empiricism and the Philosophy of Mind." One of the things that makes Sellars such a difficult read is that he insisted on writing for the ages. He considered the lingua franca of philosophy to be the history of philosophy, so his writing is a rich engagement with both the philosophy of his period and of the entire history.

The term "Analytic Philosophy" is slightly ambiguous and generally has three meanings: doctrine, method, and tradition. The doctrines are branches of belief that are sometimes mislabelled as being "Analytic philosophy". Namely logical positivism and logical atomism. The method of Analytic philosophy is a generalized approach to philosophy. It emphasizes a clear, precise approach with particular weight being placed upon argumentation and evidence, avoidance of ambiguity, and attention to detail. The

Robert Brandom
Wilfrid Sellars is the greatest American philosopher since Charles Sanders Peirce. He is the most profound and systematic epistemological thinker of the 20th Century. When intellectual historians look back at the progress of philosophy, our century will appear as a time when, after three hundred and fifty years, we finally saw through Descartes. It is in our time that the collection of puzzles and problems that have collected around the Cartesian dualism of body and mind has been supplanted by those associated with what now appears to be the more fundamental Humean-Kantian dualism of fact and norm, which appeared only darkly and misleadingly in its Cartesian guise. Heading the list of names they will associate with that conceptual sea-change are Wittgenstein and Sellars.
Our century will also appear as having placed language at the center of the semantic stage that categories of thought used to occupy. Concern with ideas has been succeeded by concern with meanings and sentences. Heading the list of names they will associate with that shift of problematic are those of Wittgenstein, Dummett, Quine, and Sellars. Alone among this distinguished group, Sellars never allows his recoil from Cartesian models of the mind to drive him into behaviorist hostility to inner episodes as such he has always taken seriously the fact that "all is not dark within".
The last hundred years have been a time of unprecedented progress in formal logic. When the historians look back to the crucial philosophical appreciations of the expressive role played by formal logistical idioms and its lessons for understanding the structure of the scientific enterprise and its products, heading the list of authors will be Frege, Russell, Carnap, and Sellars.

In "Empiricism and the Philosophy of Mind" Sellars argues that the notion of "self-authenticating nonverbal episodes" that would provide a foundation for empirical knowledge is a myth; nothing merely causal, not already in conceptual shape, could possibly play the justificatory role required of such a foundation. Rorty takes Quine, in "Two Dogmas" to make the complementary point that the notion of analytic claims true by virtue of meaning, of self-authenticating verbal episodes that might provide a foundation for another sort for knowledge, is again a myth. A third moment in the dismantling of the myth of a foundationthis time for the contentfulness of our thoughts rather than for the truth of our beliefs is due to Rorty himself. As he argues in "Realism and Reference"

Language and Myth
by
Wilfrid S. Sellars
University of Minnesota
Published in Philosophy and Phenomenological Research
This small volume is a translation of Sprache und Mythos , written some twenty-two years ago at a time when the late Professor Cassirer was in the midst of his labors on his monumental Philosophie der Symbolischen Formen . It is an off-shoot of the latter work, and together with his recent Essay on Man , provides the English reader with a first hand account, in relative non-technical terms, of Cassirer's approach to philosophy.
The study opens with a critique of negativistic theories of myth, theories which explain the occurrence of myth in terms of error, and specifically that kind of error which is based on the deficiencies (e.g., ambiguity) of language. Misconceptions of this kind are traced by Cassirer to naive realism, the notion that nature confronts the mind "as something directly and unequivocally given" (p. 6). To obtain a correct understanding of the nature of myth, and indeed, of any phenomenon of the human spirit we must "accept in all seriousness what Kant calls his 'Copernican Revolution' " (p. 8). In Cassirer's argument, however, this Revolution is given a "nominalistic" twist. The forms which bind together the thinking which is the generation of world-for-mind, are no longer the fixed pure schematized categories of Kant, but are instead conceived of as essentially bound up with the symbolism that would ordinarily be said to express them, and, consequently, as sharing in the

A 1955 critical note by wilfrid sellars on a Putnam's 1954 paper Synonymity and the Analysis of Belief Sentences.

Putnam on Synonymity and Belief
By Wilfrid Sellars
University of Minnesota
Published in Analysis
In his recent note on "Synonymity and the Analysis of Belief Sentences" Hilary Putnam, following Benson Mates, develops the following argument:
  • Suppose we use "Greek" and "Hellene" as synonymous.
  • Then, on any current theory of synonymity,
    (D)
    All Greeks are Greeks
    (D')
    All Greeks are Hellenes
    are synonymous,
  • as are
    (S)
Whoever believes that all Greeks are Greeks believes that all Greeks are Greeks
    (S')
Whoever believes that all Greeks are Greeks believes that all Greeks are Hellenes.
  • Now, it is "quite likely" that nobody doubts that whoever believes that all Greeks are Greeks believes that all Greeks are Greeks.
  • But it is "quite easy" to suppose that somebody does doubt that whoever believes that all Greeks are Greeks believes that all Greeks are Hellenes, though Putnam, for one, does not doubt it.
  • Accordingly
    (e)
Nobody doubts that whoever believes that all Greeks are Greeks believes that all Greeks are Greeks
    and
    (f)
Nobody doubts that whoever believes that all Greeks are Greeks believes that all Greeks are Hellenes
"may quite conceivably have opposite truth values and so cannot be synonymous."
