Arthur Schopenhauer:
Schopenhauer was, as a philosopher, a pessimist; he was a follower of Kant's Idealist school Born in Danzig, Schopenhauer, because of a large inheritance from his father, was able to retire early, and, as a private scholar, was able to devote his life to the study of philosophy. By the age of thirty his major work, The World as Will and Idea , was published. The work, though sales were very disappointing, was, at least to Schopenhauer, a very important work. Bertrand Russell reports that Schopenhauer told people that certain of the paragraphs were written by the "Holy Ghost." Schopenhauer's system of philosophy, as previously mentioned, was based on that of Kant's. Schopenhauer did not believe that people had individual wills but were rather simply part of a vast and single will that pervades the universe: that the feeling of separateness that each of has is but an illusion. So far this sounds much like the Spinozistic view or the Naturalistic School of philosophy. The problem with Schopenhauer, and certainly unlike Spinoza, is that, in his view, "the cosmic will is wicked ... and the source of all endless suffering." To Schopenhauer life was a painful process, relief for which, might to achieved through art or through denial. "The good man will practise complete chastity, voluntary poverty, fasting, and self-torture." (Russell.) It was Schopenhauer's view that through the contemplation of art, one "might lose contact with the turbulent stream of detailed existence around us"; and that permanent relief came through "the denial of the will to live, by the eradication of our desires, of our instincts, by the renunciation of all we consider worth while in practical life."

Philosophe allemand (1788-1860).

    Brief Biography
Arthur Schopenhauer (1788-1860) - was a native of Danzig. His mother Johanna Schopenhauer was born in Danzig and had become an author as well. Arthur was influenced by Schelling , called himself a Kantian , and violently hated Hegel - possessed the rather pessimistic philosophy that was gaining importance and support after the revolution of 1848. Schopenhauer's starting point was Kant 's division of the universe into phenomenon and noumenon , claiming that the noumenon was will and the most important since it is the inner content and the driving force of the world. For Schopenhauer, human will had primacy over the intellect, and the striving will was even more important. From this Schopenhauer devalued philosophy and logic for art because neither could prove the will. In The World as Will and Representation, Schopenhauer posited that humans living at the realm of objects are living in the realm of desire, and thus are eternally tormented by that desire. For him, one way to escape this rut of eternal torment was art. Artists intuitively grasped his eternal forms of existence and, thus, freed themselves from desire. Music was particularly privileged because it was the most in tune with the universe. Detailed Biography
German philosopher, was born in Danzig on the 22nd of February 1788. His parents belonged to the mercantile aristocracy - the bankers and traders of Danzig. His father, Heinrich Floris Schopenhauer, the youngest of a family to which the mother had brought the germs of mental malady, was a man of strong will and originality, and so proud of the independence of his native town that when Danzig in 1793 surrendered to the Prussians he and his whole establishment withdrew to Hamburg. At the age of forty he married Johanna Henrietta Trosiener, then only twenty, but the marriage owing to difference of temperament was unhappy. Their two children, Arthur and Adele (born 1796), bore the penalty of their parents - incompatibilities. They were burdened by an abnormal urgency of desire and capacity for suffering, which no doubt took different phases in the man and the woman, but linked them together in a common susceptibility to ideal pain.

Nietzsche's Schopenhauer and Education Peter Fitzsimons University of Auckland Education as liberation of the true self A key role for the Nietzschean educator is to reveal or liberate the true self. This is not a focus on the humanist subject, but rather an exhortation to break free from conventionality, to be responsible for creating our own existence, and to overcome the inertia of tradition and custom: for your true nature lies, not concealed deep within you, but immeasurably high above you, or at least above that which you usually take yourself to be. Your true educators and formative teachers reveal to you what the true basic material of your being is, something in itself ineducable and in any case difficult of access, bound and paralysed: your educators can be only your liberators. (UM3:129) Nietzsche frequently refers to Schopenhauer as his ‘true educator’, a topic explored fully in his essay Schopenhauer as Educator, published in 1874 as one of the Untimely Meditations. Although a reader can be forgiven for believing that it is the earlier philosopher in person that Nietzsche is referring to, the image is more a metaphor for Nietzsche’s own self-educative process, and his description of Schopenhauer an attribution based on his perception of his own life. He was to write many years later, "....in Schopenhauer as Educator my innermost history, my becoming is inscribed. Above all, my promise! ... At bottom it is admittedly not 'Schopenhauer as Educator' that speaks here, but his opposite, 'Nietzsche as Educator' (EH, "The Untimely Ones":3)
