Inspired by Plato and Kant, both of whom regarded the world as being more amenable to reason, Schopenhauer developed their philosophies into an instinct-recognizing, mystical, and essentially ascetic outlook, emphasizing that in the face of what he believed to be a world filled with endless strife, we ought to minimize our natural desires in order to achieve a more tranquil frame of mind and a disposition towards universal beneficence. Often considered to be a thoroughgoing pessimist, Schopenhauer in fact advocated ways via artistic, moral and ascetic forms of awareness to overcome what he considered to be a frustration-filled and fundamentally painful human condition. Arthur Schopenhauer Excerpts from Parerga and Paralipomena The Proceedings of the Friesian School, an electronic journal of philosophy, has an excellent section on the thought of Schopenhauer. Arthur Schopenhauer is frequently referred to as a pessimist who inaugurated an emphasis on the will in modern philosophy. His early education was in France and England; he entered the University of Gottingen as a medical student but transferred to Berlin in 1811 to study philosophy. His thesis, On the Fourfold Root of Sufficient Reason , was written in 1813. Though she had bitter and antagonistic relations him, his mother established a salon at Weimar which allowed him to meet literary figures, including Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, whose conversations inspired Schopenhauer's On Vision and Colors in 1816. The World as Will and Representation , his major work, appeared in 1818. After his father's death he devoted himself entirely to philosophy, being able to live comfortably on his inheritance. When he applied to become a lecturer at the University of Berlin, he was accepted by a committee which included

Arthur Schopenhauer (1788-1860) Certainly one of the greatest philosophers of the 19th century, Schopenhauer seems to have had more impact on literature (e.g. Thomas Mann) and on people in general than on academic philosophy. Perhaps that is because, first, he wrote very well, simply and intelligibly (unusual, we might say, for a German philosopher, and unusual now for any philosopher), second, he was the first Western philosopher to have access to translations of philosophical material from India , both Vedic and Buddhist , by which he was profoundly affected, to the great interest of many, and, third, his concerns were with the dilemmas and tragedies, in a religious or existential sense, of real life, not just with abstract philosophical problems. As Jung said: He was the first to speak of the suffering of the world, which visibly and glaringly surrounds us, and of confusion, passion, evil all those things which the [other philosophers] hardly seemed to notice and always tried to resolve into all-embracing harmony and comprehensiblility.
