Rousseau, Jean-Jacques
French philosopher, social and political theorist, musician, botanist, and one of the most eloquent writers of the Age of Enlightenment.
Rousseau was born in Geneva on June 18, 1712, and was raised by an aunt and uncle following the death of his mother a few days after his birth. He was apprenticed at the age of 13 to an engraver, but after three years he ran away and became secretary and companion to Madame Louise de Warens, a wealthy and charitable woman who had a profound influence on Rousseau's life and writings. In 1742 Rousseau went to Paris, where he earned his living as a music teacher, music copyist, and political secretary. He became a close friend of the French philosopher Denis Diderot
Philosophical Writings
In 1750 Rousseau won the Academy of Dijon award for his Discours sur les sciences et les arts (Discourse on the Sciences and the Arts, 1750), and in 1752 his opera Le devin du village (The Village Sage) was first performed. In his prize-winning discourse and in his Discourse on the Origin of Inequality Among Mankind (1755; trans. 1761), he expounded the view that science, art, and social institutions have corrupted humankind and that the natural, or primitive, state is morally superior to the civilized state. The persuasive rhetoric of these writings provoked derisive comments from the French philosopher

Rousseau's contribution is, first and foremost, a theory and practice of writing, of textual undecidability, of figurative language. These are all terms that have been excluded from philosophical discussion and sublimated in aesthetics as problems of style or ornament. Rousseau not only developed a theory of this forgotten corner of the Western tradition but pursued the ramifications of his theory of textuality into many of the domains onto which it impinged: into fiction autobiography the political sphere education religion and so on. The result was paradoxical: what Rousseau was explaining as a general trend was the exclusion of writing by conceptual reason or its sublimation by the imagination; as if in demonstration of his theory, his readers have long proved at once enthusiastic about his uncovering of reason's blind spots and repressive of the textuality he brought to their attention.
Nowhere has Rousseau's theory of writing as the "unthought" of thought historically proven so open to this double, paradoxical reading than around the question of the properbe it in the political realm as property, the ethical as propriety, or the literary as proper meaning. Readers early felt the revolutionary political force of Rousseau's statement in the Discourse on Inequality that the drawing of property lines is at once both an act of unparalleled violence, which snatches away a terrain hitherto open to all, and an act synonymous with the creation of society, which lays down a distinction between public and private spheres. Rousseau questioned the very ground on which people stood by reminding us that society was contractual and that the contract reposed on a violent forgetfulness. As for his ethics

Philosophy of Jean Jacques Rousseau
Jean Jacques Rousseau was a fine philosopher of the Romantic Movement who wrote beautifully and eloquently on his life, education, nature and society. I have very fond memories of Jean Jacques Rousseau's Confessions . It was my first book of philosophy and profoundly affected me and my life direction.
Rousseau is right to emphasis that understanding our connection to nature is central to a good education. We evolved from nature, we are a part of nature, only by understanding this can we truly understand ourselves. To understand nature and thus to be well educated and wise, we must understand reality as Plato writes;

His book Du Contrat social/Social Contract (1762), emphasizing the rights of the people over those of the government, was a significant influence on the French Revolution. In the novel Emile (1762), he outlined a new theory of education. Rousseau was born in Geneva, Switzerland. Discourses on the Origins of Inequality noble savage . In Social Contract he argued that government is justified only if sovereignty stays with the people. He thereby rejected representative democracy in favour of direct democracy, modelled on the Greek polis and the Swiss canton, and stated that a government could be legitimately overthrown if it failed to express the general will of the people. Emile was written as an example of how to elicit the unspoiled nature and abilities of children, based on natural development and the power of example.

    Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712 – 1778)
