Antonio Rosmini
Antonio Rosmini (1797-1855), Italian priest, philosopher, theologian and patriot, and founder of a religious congregation, aimed principally in his philosophical work at re-addressing the balance between reason and religion which had largely been lost as a result of the Enlightenment. To this purpose, he absorbed the tradition of philosophia perennis
1. Life and Works
Rosmini was born in 1797 at Rovereto, Italy, a staunchly Italian-speaking town, but at the time part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and ruled from Vienna. The Rosmini family, citizens of Rovereto for several centuries, had become rich through the manufacture of silk, and enjoyed the way of life proper to the lesser aristocracy. Antonio's primary and secondary education was, however, catered for at the public school, and through his own intensive reading. Tertiary education was completed at the University of Padua. After ordination to the priesthood in 1821, Rosmini studied and wrote at Rovereto until 1826, and from 1826-28 at Milan. Despite his instinctive distaste for the excesses of the French Revolution, which inevitably played a large part in the cultural formation of persons growing to maturity in the first quarter of the 19th century, Rosmini was not afraid to take a stand against State interference in religious affairs. 3. Introduction To Antonio Rosmini
ANTONIO ROSMINI (1797–1855). A fuller treatment is available on this site under Antonio Rosmini Introduction to his Life and Teaching by Denis Cleary.
http://www.rosmini-in-english.org/introRosmini.htm
ANTONIO ROSMINI Antonio Rosmini, Catholic priest and founder of the Institute of Charity (a religious congregation), dedicated a great part of his considerable intellectual ability to the study of philosophy. In particular, he wished to lay firm foundations for an objective philosophy which would serve as an antidote to the seed of scepticism sown by the Enlightenment. For him, philosophy, science and faith, which separated finally and disastrously in the 19th century, could be and should be complementary in the search for knowledge. Faith and reason were for Rosmini "like two wings on which the human spirit rises to the contemplation of truth". Despite opposition from secular opponents and from within the ranks of his fellow-churchmen, Rosmini never wavered in his aim. Except in Italy, however, and to a certain extent in nineteenth century England, Rosmini's proposals fell on deaf ears. Today, the urgency, importance and relevancy of Rosmini's task and endeavour have finally been recognised, at least by co-religionists. The fruitful relationship between philosophy and faith is seen "in the courageous research pursued by more recent thinkers, among whom I gladly mention…Antonio Rosmini…in referring to these I intend not to endorse every aspect of their thought, but simply to offer significant examples of a process of philosophical enquiry which was enriched by engaging the data of faith. One thing is certain: attention to the spiritual journey of these masters can only give greater momentum to both the search for truth and the effort to apply the results of that search to the service of humanity" (

Antonio Rosmini-Serbati founder of the Institute of Charity, was born on 24 March 1797 at Rovereto in the Italian Tyrol. His parents were rich and of noble descent. Antonio was one of three children. Antonio was brought up in a religious atmosphere and was by nature a serious and bookish child. He was a voracious reader and by the age of 11 he made two resolutions: to finish every book he started and always to take notes. He graduated from school in 1814 at the age of 17. He decided to study at the university of Padua where he impressed all around him by his goodness and learning and attracted a wide circle of friends. He started a learned society at Rovereto where for the first time since the 16th century the philosophy of St Thomas Aquinas was studied. Rosmini was ordained priest in 1821. Meanwhile his sister Margarita had opened an orphanage at Rovereto. She learned of the work of St Maddalena di Canossa, founder of the Canossan Sisters

Fr.Hayez, eseguito a Lesa nel 1853 Vita e opere Nato a Rovereto il 24 marzo 1797, sacerdote cattolico e fondatore di una congregazione religiosa che egli chiamo' Istituto della carita' , Rosmini visse quasi sempre assorto nei suoi studi (tranne una breve partecipazione alla vita politica per una missione del governo piemontese presso papa Pio IX, a Roma e Gaeta, nel 1848) e mori' a Stresa il 1 luglio 1855. Tra i suoi numerosi scritti, i principali sono i seguenti : Opuscoli filosofici Nuovo saggio sull'origine delle idee (1830) la sua prima grande opera filosofica; Massime di perfezione cristiana (1830), piccolo per dimensione ma grande di contenuto, in cui vi e' in compendio tutta la sua dottrina ascetica; Principi della scienza morale Delle Cinque Piaghe della Santa Chiesa (1832-33), un testo "scomodo" per molta gente e che costo' tanti triboli al Roveretano; Il rinnovamento della filosofia in Italia (1836), una risposta alle critiche di Terenzio Mamiani;

Rosmini and Rosminianism
Antonio Rosmini Serbati, philosopher, and founder of the Institute of Charity, born 24 March, 1797, at Rovereto, Austrian Tyrol; died 1 July, 1855, at Stresa, Italy; was educated at home until his twentieth year, and, after a three years' course at the University of Padua, returned to Rovereto to prepare for Holy orders. He was ordained priest at Chioggia, 21 April, 1821, and in 1822 received at Padua the Doctorate in Theology and Canon Law. In 1823 he went to Rome with Mgr. Pyrker, Patriarch of Venice, met Consalvi and other prominent men, and was encouraged by Pius VII to undertake the reform of philosophy. The next three years (1823-26) he spent in philosophical pursuits at Rovereto, devoting himself especially to the study of St. Thomas. He had already adopted as principles of conduct:
  • never to assume external works of charity on his own initiative, but, until summoned by some positive outward manifestation of God's will, to busy himself with his own sanctification, a thing always pleasing in the Divine sight (principle of passivity);
