QUO VADIS ?

Reinventing Nature: Science Narratives as Myths for an Endangered Planet
Dissertation, 1994, by William Grassie
CHAPTER THREE A HERMENEUTICAL APPROACH TO MODERN SCIENCE: EXTENDING PAUL RICOEUR'S HERMENEUTICS INTO THE BIOPHYSICAL SCIENCES It's all a question of story. We are in trouble just now because we do not have a good story. We are in between stories. The old story, the account of how the world came to be and how we fit into it, is no longer effective. Yet we have not learned the new story. Our traditional story of the universe sustained us for a long period of time. It shaped our emotional attitudes, provided us with life purposes, and energized action. It consecrated suffering and integrated knowledge. We awoke in the morning and knew where we were. We could answer the questions of our children. We could identify crime, punish transgressors. Everything was taken care of because the story was there. It did not necessarily make people good, nor did it take away the pains and stupidities of life or make for unfailing warmth in human association. It did provide a context in which life could function in a meaningful manner. Thomas Berry 1989.

Ricoeur, Paul
Paul Ricoeur (b. 1913), who has been professor of philosophy at the University of Paris and the University of Chicago, has had extraordinary influence in such disparate fields as theology, psychoanalysis, historiography, political economy, and literary theory. Only Michel Foucault and Jacques Derrida among contemporary French philosophers have had such an impact outside their domain. But in contrast to Foucault and Derrida, Ricoeur has never departed from the professional concerns of his discipline. All of his work has been written within the philosophical paradigm of the two traditions he has merged- Phenomenology , as it developed from Edmund Husserl and Martin Heidegger , and Hermeneutics , as revised by Hans-Georg Gadamer.
Beginning with Interpretation Theory: Discourse and the Surplus of Meaning (1976) and culminating with volume 3 of Time and Narrative (1986), Ricoeur has addressed every major theoretical issue of literary criticism. During these ten years he wrote five books and numerous articles, selections from which have been collected and edited by John B. Thompson in Hermeneutics and the Human Sciences (1981), by George H. Taylor in

32. Philosophical Hermeneutics, Or Theories Of Interpretation
Sample syllabus of Dr. Harry Reeder's regularly taught (graduate undergraduate)course on hermeneutics this course will begin with a consideration of the background of philosophical hermeneutics (theories of interpretation) in modern philosophy (Descartes, Hume, Kant, Dilthey). Then it will follow the hermeneutic tradition in philosophy as it develops in the twentieth century, through a philosophical examination of the works of Edmund Husserl, Martin Heidegger, Hans-Georg Gadamer, J¼rgen Habermas, and paul ricoeur. In addition, we will examine the independent yet in part parallel philosophy of Ludwig Wittgenstein.

Ricoeur, Paul Memory, History, Forgetting . Translated by Kathleen Blamey and David Pellauer. 624 p. (est.), 1 halftone. 2004 Cloth $40.00sp 0-226-71341-5 Spring 2004 Available 06/04. Why do major historical events such as the Holocaust occupy the forefront of the collective consciousness, while profound moments such as the Armenian genocide, the McCarthy era, and France's role in North Africa stand distantly behind? Is it possible that history "overly remembers" some events at the expense of others? A landmark work in philosophy, Paul Ricoeur's Memory, History, Forgetting examines this reciprocal relationship between remembering and forgetting, showing how it affects both the perception of historical experience and the production of historical narrative. Memory, History, Forgetting , like its title, is divided into three major sections. Ricoeur first takes a phenomenological approach to memory and mnemonical devices. The underlying question here is the validity of images of the past or lived memory as real or non real. The second section addresses recent work by historians by reopening the question of the nature and truth of historical knowledge. Ricoeur explores whether historians can truly break with dependence on memory through their critical use of documents, which inevitably depend on the testimony of participants and, as a result, on lived memory. The third and final section is a profound meditation on the necessity of forgetting as a condition for the possibility of remembering, and in it Ricoeur reaches a conclusion that is no less than an interpretive approach to the human condition. Throughout the book there are careful and close readings of the texts of Aristotle and Plato, of Descartes and Kant, and of Halbwachs and Pierre Nora.

Ricoeur, Paul The Just . Translated by David Pellauer. 192 p. 5_1/2 x 8_1/2 2000, 2003 Cloth $20.00sp 0-226-71339-3 Spring 2000
Paper $14.00tx 0-226-71340-7 Fall 2003 The essays in this book contain some of Paul Ricoeur's most fascinating ruminations on the nature of justice and the law. His thoughts ranging across a number of topics and engaging the work of thinkers both classical and contemporary, Ricoeur offers a series of important reflections on the juridical and the philosophical concepts of right and the space between moral theory and politics. "Ricoeur sketches a distinctive position on questions of justice that straddles the liberal/communitarian divide common in the Anglo-American world. . . . Ricoeur provides a fresh perspective on current debates within his own interesting account of the structure of moral action."Georgia Warnke, Ethics "The novelties of this book are the analyses of different phases of judicial practice: hearing, judging, sanction, rehabilitation and pardon. It is fascinating to read how Ricoeur analyses these with his hermeneutics of detours or hermeneutics of distanciation, attempting to do justice to both interpretation and argumentation, both punishment and pardon, and so on."Arto Laitinen, Radical Philosophy "Essential readings for anyone concerned with the link between ethics, law, and politics."Paul Gyllenhammer
