Thomas Reid
After studying at the University of Aberdeen, Reid entered the ministry in New Machar in 1737. In 1748 he published a short essay entitled "An Essay on Quantity" which concerned Hutchison's Inquiry into the Origin of Our Ideas of Beauty and Virtue . Although this was his only published work, he was given a professorship at King's College Aberdeen in 1752. There he wrote An Inquiry Into the Human Mind on the Principles of Common Sense (published in 1764). Shortly afterward he was given a much more prestigious professorship at the University of Glasgow. He resigned from this position in 1781 in order to give himself greater time to write, and published Essays on the Intellectual Powers of Man in 1785 and Essays on the Active Powers of Man in 1788.

Thomas Reid
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Thomas Reid April 26 October 7 ), Scottish philosopher , and a contemporary of David Hume , was the founder of the Scottish School of Common Sense , and played an integral role in the Scottish Enlightenment . For the first part of his life, he lived in Aberdeen, where he created the "Wise Club" (a literal-philosophical association) and conceived the most part of his first work. In 1764 he was called to substitute Adam Smith at the University of Glasgow and published his "Inquiry". Reid believed that common sense (in a special philosophical sense) is, or at least should be, at the foundation of all philosophical inquiry. In his day and for some years into the 19th century , he was regarded as more important than David Hume . He advocated direct realism , or common sense realism , and argued strongly against the Theory of Ideas advocated by John Locke René Descartes , and (in varying forms) nearly all Early Modern philosophers who came after them. He had a great admiration, by the way, for Hume, and also asked him to correct the first manuscript of his (Reid's) "Inquiry"

He himself thought all the epistemology was an introductory part to practical ethics: when we are confirmed in our common believes by philosophy, all we have to do is to act accordingly to them, because we know what is right. His moral philosophy reminds also the latin

Thomas Reid Thomas Reid was a philosopher highly thought of in his time, but almost forgotten afterwards. He has been carefully studied only in the last 50 years, as many philosophers worked out for themselves conclusions that Reid had already put forward. Reid’s main work was the Essays on the Intellectual Powers of Man ; it is from this book that you’ll read excerpts. Reid lived from 1710 to 1796, and thus had read all of our previous authors. A follower of Berkeley in early times; realized that he could neither refute B’s arguments nor accept B’s conclusions. Page 170. Therefore, he reasoned that at least one basic principle of Berkeley’s thought must be wrong. And this principle he found to be the Theory of Ideas. Much of what we’ll read is therefore an examination of the Theory of Ideas, not only in Berkeley, but in all the other authors we’ve read. Reid lays out the arguments for the Theory along with the consequences of the Theory, and criticizes it unmercifully. His substitute is sometimes called ‘Common Sense Theory’. This is not quite right, as your reading shows.

REID, THOMAS MAYNE (1818-1883). Thomas Mayne Reid, novelist and adventurer, was born on April 4, 1818, in Ballyroney, County Down, Ireland, the son of Rev. Thomas Mayne Reid, senior clerk of the Irish General Assembly. Intended for the Presbyterian ministry, Reid entered the Royal Academical Institution in Belfast in September 1834 but, being of a rebellious disposition, left the school in 1838 without completing his course of instruction. After briefly running a school in Ballyroney, he sailed for New Orleans in December 1839 aboard the Dumfriesshire . In New York he was employed as a corn factor but left his job after six months, supposedly because he refused to whip slaves. He then sojourned in Nashville, where he served as tutor to the children of Gen. Peyton Robertson and ran, for seven months, the New English, Mathematical, and Classical School. In either Natchez, Mississippi, or Natchitoches, Louisiana, he worked as a clerk for a provision dealer and sometime in 1841 met Commodore Edwin W. Moore, qv to whom he later dedicated his novel Scalp Hunters (1851). In 1843 Reid was in St. Louis, from where, according to contradictory sources, he either started up the Missouri River in the company of John James Audubon
