Visit MediaLink at http://www.aynrand.org/medialink/ Released: April 1, 2002 Assisted Suicide: A Moral Right Ashcroft's Decree Threatens Doctors' and Patients' Rights By Thomas Bowden The irony was so rich it could be lost only on a strict religious conservative like U.S. attorney general John Ashcroft. What followed immediately was a court challenge by the State of Oregon, whose voters had legalized doctor-assisted suicide under strict procedures designed to ensure that a patient's free will coincided with a physician's objective judgment that suicide was a reasonable option. Eventually, the U.S. Supreme Court will decide whether Ashcroft's gambit was legal, and whether the Controlled Dangerous Substances Act can be used to frighten doctors into ignoring their patients' desperate entreaties. But in the meantime, one thing is clear: there is no rational, secular basis upon which the government can properly prevent any individual from choosing to end his own life. Rather, it is religious mysticism that energizes Ashcroft and the Bush administration into intimidating doctors who dare to defy God's divine plan. The conservatives' outrage at the Oregon doctors stems from the belief that human life is a gift from the Lord, who puts us here on earth to carry out His will. Thus, the very idea of suicide is anathema, because one who "plays God" by causing his own death, or assisting in the death of another, insults his Maker and invites eternal damnation, not to mention divine retribution against the decadent society that permits such sinful behavior.

On Presidents Day, most Americans would like to celebrate the men who have been leaders of the greatest country in the world. It is a sad commentary on our times to note how far back in history we have to go to find presidents genuinely worthy of admiration. We can admire George Washington, who rejected the opportunity to be a monarch and became the father of our republic. We can admire Thomas Jefferson, author of the Declaration of Independence. We can admire James Madison, the father of our Constitution, including the Bill of Rights. Those presidents stood firmly for certain core American principles: individual rights, a free society, limited government. They acted, to the best of their abilities, to implement and preserve these principles. Today, however, our leaders have distanced themselves so much from such principles that there is no one to admire. Most Americans feel little more than contempt for modern politicians, presidential and non-presidential alike. The reason is that our politicians do not stand for anything at all.

To make Rand's testimony more meaningful to contemporary readers, this transcript includes explanatory notes and background material. None of the speakers' words have been altered or omitted. Background The History of HUAC The House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) became a permanent (or "standing") committee of the House in January 1945. It had existed on a temporary basis since 1938. HUAC was supposed to investigate "un-American propaganda" in the United States. Although it also investigated pro-fascist or pro-Nazi activity, HUAC is most widely known for its investigations of suspected Communist influence in the late 1940s and early 1950s. Along with the investigation of Alger Hiss , the investigation of Communist influence in the motion picture industry is one of the defining episodes in the committee's history. Although HUAC would continue to exist into the 1960s, these memorable hearings are its best-known legacy. The committee's name was changed in 1969, and it was abolished in 1975, when jurisdiction over investigation of foreign influence was transferred to the House Judiciary Committee.

Locke, Ph.D. It is now taken as a virtual axiom that the way to cure racism is through the promulgation of racial and ethnic diversity within corporations, universities, government agencies and other institutions. The diversity movement has many facets: diversity awareness, diversity training, diversity hiring and admissions, diversity promotions, and diversity accommodations (e.g., black student organizations and facilities at universities). The common feature in all these facets is: racial preference. If diversity is the cure, however, why, instead of promoting racial harmony, has it brought racial division and conflict? The answer is not hard to discover. The unshakable fact is that you cannot cure racism with racism. To accept the diversity premise means to think in racial terms rather than in terms of individual character or merit. Taking jobs away from one group in order to compensate a second group to correct injustices caused by a third group who mistreated a fourth group at an earlier point in history (e.g., 1860) is absurd on the face of it and does not promote justice; rather, it does the opposite. Singling out one group for special favors (e.g., through affirmative action) breeds justified resentment and fuels the prejudices of real racists. People are individuals; they are not interchangeable ciphers in an amorphous collective.
