Ayn Rand
By Catherine Daligga The eldest of three sisters, Ayn Rand was born Alissa Rosenbaum on February 2, 1905, in St. Petersburg, Russia, to Fronz and Anna Rosenbaum. Her father, a pharmacist, had his own shop, a rare position for Jews in Russia. A precocious child, Alyssa declared herself an atheist in her early teens, and while she never denied her Jewish heritage, she also never softened her opposition to religion or any other form of "mysticism." The privations she and her family endured as a result of the Russian Revolution, Including the Bolsheviks taking possession of her father's business, affected her deeply. Somehow she managed to survive the purges of bourgeois students long enough to obtain a degree in history from the University of Leningrad in 1924. At the university, she took a few classes in American political history and found the principles expressed in the Declaration of Independence fascinating. Despite the progressively isolationist policy of the Soviets, some Western exports still found their way to Russia in the 1920s. For Alyssa, the most important were American movies. Conditions in the United States-at least as depicted on the screen-impressed her as strongly as conditions at home repelled her, so when distant cousins provided the miraculous opportunity to travel to the United States, she did not hesitate. She turned twenty-one in Berlin, on her way to America. At immigration, she announced that her first name was Ayn (pronounced to rhyme with "pine"). Shortly after, she chose the second part of her beloved typewriter's brand name for her surname.

Ayn Rand Biography
Novelist and philosopher Ayn Rand was born Alissa Rosenbaum on February 2, 1905 in St. Petersburg, Russia. Her family lived in a large, comfortable apartment above the chemist shop owned by her father. From her earliest years, the girl felt alienated from the dark, brooding atmosphere of Russia, but loved the bright world projected in stories appearing in foreign magazines. At age nine she made the conscious decision to become a writer. Against the growing squalor of Soviet life, the young woman nurtured a burning desire to abandon Russia for the West. She obtained a passport to visit relatives in Chicago, and left Russia and her family in January 1926, never to return. She arrived in New York City weeks later, with only $50 in her purse. Last modified: April 12, 1996 This biography is highly condensed from Barbara Branden's book The Passion Of Ayn Rand (Doubleday, 1986). Readers interested in a full account of Rand's highly dramatic life should read it. This page is still in draft form! Ayn Rand was born Alice Rosenbaum on February 2, 1905 in St. Petersburg, Russia. Rand hated life in Russia; she felt the dominant culture of Russia to glorify the tragic and the malevolent, the antithesis of what she wanted for her own life. And then there was the Bolshevik revolution. Not only did she witness the nationalization of her father's chemistry shop-a shop that represented the culmination of his self-made rise from poverty-but the morality of collectivism was abhorrent to Rand even as a young girl. Rand studied history at University of St. Petersburg. Although she knew she wanted to be a writer as early as age nine, she chose history because, on the one hand, she did not want to ``study, as examples, writers who bored [her] and whom [she] despised,'' and, on the other hand, history would give her the background she needed to write on the broad social issues with which she planned to deal. She graduated in 1924, only to work as a tour guide. In 1926 she left Russia for America, never to return.

11. Ayn Rand, Anti-Communism, & The Left
Biography and a critical analysis of her philosophy.
Man is not the best of things in the universe. Aristotle, Nicomachean Ethics , Book VI, Chapter vii; 3-4 (H. Rackham, Loeb Classical Library, 1926, 1982, p. 342)
Ayn Rand (1905-1982)
Ayn Rand (born Alice Rosenbaum) is a fascinating person and an inspiring advocate of freedom but a very mixed blessing philosophically. Her novels The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged are still best selling introductions to the ideas of personal freedom and of the free market. As literature they may have drawbacks, but they are compelling "reads," which is certainly what Rand would have wanted. Rand's passionate and moralistic tone, while off-putting to many, is nevertheless probably a real part of her appeal and is no less than an equal and opposite reaction to the self-righteousness that is still characteristic of leftist rhetoric. Few writers convey an irresistible ferocity of convictions as Rand does. To many, including the present writer, raised and indoctrinated with the standard disparagements of capitalism, a novel like Atlas Shrugged can produce something very much like a Conversion Experience. At the same time, the harsh certainty of an autodidact and self-made person, and the high handed authoritarian manner of Rand's personality, worked against her case, her cause, and her life.

A Y N R A N D : A R E S O U R C E G U I D E T Like libertarianism, Objectivism is represented on thousands of Web sites. The Ayn Rand Foundation is the official repository of teachings, commentaries, and documents perpetuating her philosophy. During most of her professional career, Rand mentored Nathaniel Branden, but the two had a nasty public falling-out late in the author's life. One result was a fair amount of emnity between Rand followers and those who sympathized with Branden (and his wife Barbara, also a Rand acolyte). A good deal of this dispute leaks over to the Web, including frequent references to Barbara Branden's surprisingly saccharine Rand biography, "The Passion of Ayn Rand." In a public letter in October 1968, Rand explained at great length the reasons for the split. You can read the Brandens' answers from links provided at Russel Hanneken's informative site One of the most relevant sites to the discussion of Objectivism and Libertarianism is Peter Saint Andre's essay , "Why I Am A LIbertarian," which first appeared in the magazine "Full Context" and which you can read online. Here is a sampling of other Web sites put together by friends and enemies of Objectivism. Two good Rand jumpstations (collections of links that will take you to other sites) are at and

An oustanding source of inspiration and pleasure! Ayn Rand and Nathaniel Branden have an affair, with devastating consequences for all involved. [Dir: Christopher Menaul/ Helen Mirren, Eric Stoltz, Julie Delpy, Peter Fonda/ 104min/ Drama, Biography] This film has something for everyone. First, for Rand's fans, this is an intimate look at the woman Ayn Rand, a look that explains with some understanding the well-known affair between herself and Nathaniel Branden. Also, interwoven with the telling of the details of the affair are elements of the creation of Atlas Shrugged. There could have been more exposition of Rand's philosophy, but you get a pretty good idea what she was about. Second, for Rand's enemies, there is simply the fact that this film is about an affair. Affairs are not the most dignified things, especially when carried on with someone twenty-five years junior, as Nathaniel Branden was to Rand, and especially when involving what appeared to be rough sex, that being the way Rand apparently wanted it. I can only imagine the satisfaction of Leftists at the spectacle.
