He is an extremely important figure in the development of mathematics yet we know relatively little about his mathematical achievements. Unlike many later Greek mathematicians, where at least we have some of the books which they wrote, we have nothing of Pythagoras's writings. The society which he led, half religious and half scientific, followed a code of secrecy which certainly means that today Pythagoras is a mysterious figure. We do have details of Pythagoras's life from early biographies which use important original sources yet are written by authors who attribute divine powers to him, and whose aim was to present him as a god-like figure. What we present below is an attempt to collect together the most reliable sources to reconstruct an account of Pythagoras's life. There is fairly good agreement on the main events of his life but most of the dates are disputed with different scholars giving dates which differ by 20 years. Some historians treat all this information as merely legends but, even if the reader treats it in this way, being such an early record it is of historical importance. Pythagoras's father was Mnesarchus ([12] and [13]), while his mother was Pythais [8] and she was a native of Samos. Pythagoras of Samos (c 582-504 BC)
Pythagoras, who coined the word "philosophy" which in Greek is "the love of wisdom," lived from around 582 to 504 BC and was another remarkable thinker from Asia Minor. Pythagoras, who was the son of Mnesarchus, seems to have been born at Samos and certainly spent his early manhood there, where he studied under Thales. Heraclitus speaks of him in the past tense, and Aristoxenus said Pythagoras left Samos to escape from Polycrates' tyranny (532 BC). Timaeus seems to have said he came to Italy in 529 BC where he settled at Croton and remained there for twenty years. Croton was a Greek colony on the southern coast that had long been in friendly relations with Samos and was famed for its athletes and its doctors. There Pythagoras founded his society and his doctrine was adopted and developed by a large following of Pythagoreans, including Damon. Medieval writers, has been upset by some recent writers, who understand the phrase, "Abstain from beans" ( kyamon apechete ), to refer to a measure of practical prudence, and not to a gastronomic principle. Beans, black and white, were, according to this interpretation, the means of voting in Magna Græcia, and "Abstain from beans" would, therefore, mean merely "Avoid politics" - a warning which, we know, was warranted by the troubles in which the school was involved on account of the active share which it took during the founder's lifetime in the struggles of the popular with the aristocratic party in Southern Italy. The school was instructed by its founder to devote itself to the cultivation of philosophy, mathematics, music, and gymnastics, the aim of the organization being primarily ethical. The theoretical doctrines taught by the master were strictly adhered to, so much so that the Pythagoreans were known for their frequent citation of the ipse dixit of the founder. Naturally, as soon as the legends began to grow up around the name of Pythagoras, many tenets were ascribed him which were in fact introduced by later Pythagoreans, such as Philolaus and Archytas of Tarentum.

K. C. Guthrie. Students will explore the philosophy of Pythagoras through the use of a scavenger hunt and also work in small workstations applying the Pythagorean theorem using problem solving skills and a hands on approach.

Pythagoras of Samos was not only the first "pure mathematician" but also an important religious philosopher. He was trained in Egypt in the universal mysteries, which included math, geometry, astronomy, music, harmonics, and intervals, especially as they relate to states of consciousness. Pythagoras established an influential school in Croton (now in southern Italy) that had many followerscalled akousmatics and an inner circle of disciples known as mathematikoi . The mathematikoi Amos Bronson Alcott undoubtedly had Pythagoras in mind when he formed his Fruitlands commune in 1843.

He was born in the 50th Olympiad, that is, 580-574 BC. His father was Mnesarchus, who was from Etruria, but who settled , lived and died on Samos. His mother, Parthenia, was a descendant of Angaeus, the first King of Samos. Pythagoras had two brothers, Eunomus and Tyrrhenus, and a sister, Themistocleia. There is a whole host of myths about the birth of Pythagoras. Porphyrius tells us that a Samiot poet was responsible for the myth that Pythagoras was the son of Apollo and the Pythian priestess of Delphi. The poet Iamblichus says that Mnesarchus, the father of Pythagoras, asked the Pythian priestess at the Delphic oracle if the journey which he was about to undertake would be pleasant and profitable. The oracle replied that his affairs would prosper; it also told him that his wife, Parthenia, who was pregnant at the time, would give birth to a son who "would never be exceeded in beauty and wisdom". Mnesarchus, realizing that the child to be born was sent by the gods, renamed with his wife Pythaes and called his new-born son Pythagoras, because the Pythian priestess had made a prophecy about him. As Pythagoras grew up, he acquired wisdom. Pythagoras was the pupil of Pherecydes, who was then living on Samos, and took lessons from Hermadamas. At the age of 18, he visited Thales at
