GUIDE to the
NATIVE AMERICAN PAINTING REFERENCE LIBRARY RESEARCH FILES, 1864-1995 ARTHUR (1929-1995) AND SHIFRA (d. 1990) SILBERMAN. Collection, 1864-1995. 101.5 cubic feet (169 document boxes, 7 record cartons, 4 oversized boxes). Location: 0253-0314; 0347. Introduction: In 1975 Arthur Silberman and his wife, Shifra, founded the Native American Painting Reference Library. He became its Director, while Shifra served as research consultant and assistant on all the Library's projects. Silberman described the Library as being, "committed to the premise that Native American painting is a valuable part of the American heritage and as such is deserving of a continuing effort to collect and preserve all material having a bearing on its history and development. The Library has extensive holdings including books, brochures, clippings, photographs, catalogs, auction records, interview tapes, correspondence, memorabilia, etc. Its collection of slides and paintings in private and public collections is the largest in the United States." (Native American Painting Reference Library, 2-17-90) Silberman saw the goals of the Library as increasing the appreciation of Native American painting by making reference material available to educators, writers, publishers, and museums; and increasing public awareness through lectures, publications, and exhibits.

Welcome to my little corner of the Universe. Please sign my guestbook if you have time. I am an Associate Professor of Geology, specializing in vertebrate paleontology (reptiles) and computer applications in geology (see some of my publications below). Currently I am the WebMaster for the College of Science and Engineering and for the Department of Geology and Chair of the TCU Computer and Telecommunications Committee. I was born in the Panama Canal Zone during the early years of I Love Lucy. I have B.S. (1975) and M.A. (1977) degrees in Geology from the University of Texas at Austin and a Ph.D. (1982) in Anatomy from the University of Chicago . I taught as a lecturer in geology at the University of Texas at Austin from 1982 to 1985 and have been at TCU since 1985. I have team-conducted a number of EOSAT-sponsored image processing/geology workshops here at TCU, using our computer facilities. With others I have conducted microcomputer image processing workshops for ERIM and also at ECOINFORMA meetings. On the fun side, I have consulted with the Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago and the Gladys Porter Zoo in Brownsville about fossil reptile dioramas and murals. I have been a judge in the Tarrant County Science Fair for a number of years, have twice judged at the International Science Fair and given talks to the public on various aspects of geology and paleontology.

Fans of the War on Terror, Which Sounds Ever More Like Nineteen Eighty-Four, Still Venerate George Orwell. They Can Have Him.
by John R. MacArthur
But events have overtaken my natural abhorrence for mediaspeak; I must admit at least one thing will never be the same for me post 9/11: my reflexively good opinion of George Orwell, icon-saint of the non-communist left, whose holy reputation rests in part on its usefulness to the anticommunist, neoconservative right. In truth, I've never felt that attached to Orwell; somehow his writing never evoked the passionate admiration I hold for Albert Camus or Graham Greene. But I've always felt obliged to exalt Orwell, whatever my gut feelings. Within the small corner of the media that I inhabit, one could say that it's politically correct to love Orwell; and to be sure, there's much to love about his work, the journalism, of course, but also his remarkable talent for exposing hypocrisy and demolishing cant. Nicely put if you're a Pentagon press agent. I replied that I didn't think the Afghan civilian deaths were all necessarily accidental. Deliberate terror bombing of civilians was an established U.S. military strategy with prominent antecedents (Dresden, Tokyo, Vietnam) that is still hotly debated at war colleges around the world. The theory goes that if civilians provide support for an army, then bombing will make them abandon their supportive tasks factory work, shelter and concealment, food gathering, etc.

Narrative History of the County of Somerset
by Brenda Ralph Lewis
S O M E R S E T Saxon Times Their difficulties increased as the population grew and extreme measures were taken to obtain new land for cultivation. Marshes and wetlands were drained to make meadow and pasture, hill land and salt grasslands were reclaimed, and woodland was cleared. By 1240 an extra 400 hectares had been freed but more was needed and earth and stone banks were constructed to reclaim the salt marshes around the River Parrett estuary. Reclamation could involve regular contests with the sea, which flooded in at times of unusually high tides,as happened in 1259. This seeming disaster had its "up" side, however, producing particularly fertile land once the floodwaters had receded. This, in its turn, produced plenty of taxes for the royal revenues which in the mid-14th century made the Stretcholt tithing in Pawlett, much of it consisting of reclaimed land, one of the most highly taxed in Somerset. Agriculture in late medieval Somerset operated on both the mixed farming system and by open-field farming on land held in common with others. To ensure there was no trespassing, an "umpire" wearing white gloves and carrying a white stick was noted in 1340 supervising the mowing and the making of hayricks at Shepton Beachamp. Where there were no fields suitable plots of land, like closes, were used for planting oats and rye. The produce of manor orchards included fruit, especially pears and apples, some of which was turned into cider, vegetables such as leeks and onions and trees for timber.

This WWW-site is devoted to the Life and Work of Arthur Norman Prior (1914-69), the founding father of temporal logic. A special emphasis is placed on Prior's papers in The Bodleian Library, Oxford. The information is structured such as to take advantage of the facilities provided by the Internet, especially wrt. hypertext and inter-linking of mutually relevant documents. More exactly how that is done is explained in the appropriate places, for instance in the introduction to the boxes containing Prior's papers in The Bodleian Library. Three major types of information are found here:
  • General information on A. N. Prior, for instance his 'Life' and a list of Secondary literature.
