A Bibliography of Non-Standard Logics Peter Suber Philosophy Department Earlham College In the kinds of non-standard logics included, this bibliography aims for completeness, although it has not yet succeeded. In the coverage of any given non-standard logic, it does not at all aim for completeness. Instead it aims to include works suitable as introductions for those who are already familiar with standard first-order logic. Looking at these non-standard logics gives us an indirect, but usefully clear and comprehensive idea of the usually hazy notion of "standardness". In standard first-order logics:
  • Wffs are finite in length (although there may be infinitely many of them).
  • Rules of inference take only finitely many premises.
  • There are only two truth-values, "truth" and "falsehood".
  • Truth-values of given proposition symbols do not change within a given interpretation, only between or across interpretations.
  • All propositional operators and connectives are truth-functional.
  • "p ~p" is provable even if we do not have p or ~p separately; that is, the principle of excluded middle holds.

Tugboat Arthur Foss, Kirkland Washington. Photo by James Delgado, 1988 The 1889 tug Arthur Foss , ex- Wallowa , is a preserved historic vessel owned and maintained by Northwest Seaport Museum, Inc. of Seattle, Washington. Arthur Foss is moored at Kirkland, Washington on Lake Washington at the Moss Bay Marina.
Arthur Foss as Wallowa and as Rebuilt and Maintained
As built in 1889 and launched as Wallowa , the vessel was 111.6 feet in length with a 23.9-foot beam, a 11.6-foot depth of hold, and a 15-foot draft. Wallowa was registered at 225 gross tonnage and 127 net tonnage. [1] Built of Douglas fir, the tug's wooden hull was heavily built with 8- x 7-inch double-sawn frames, wooden knees, 4-inch thick outer hull and ceiling planking, treenail-fastened. The 15-inch thick keel was built with a 2- 1/2-inch thick ironbark shoe, and the hull above the turn of the bilge is sheathed with 1-inch thick ironbark. The tug's form then, as now, was of a "typical" form for this type of craft prior to the Second World War. In 1927, one author explained that while there were slight differences in design and powering

A Short History of Arthurian Archaeology by Michelle L. Biehl
Written for Archaeology of Europe, University of Minnesota, 1991
Introduction: Arthur
And at the feast of Pentacost all manner of men assayed to
pull at the sword that wold assay, but none might prevail but Arthur,
and he pulled it afore all the lords and commons that were there,
wherefore all the commons cried at once, 'We will have Arthur unto
our king; we will put him no more in delay, for we all see that it is
God's will that he shall be our king, and who that holdeth against it,
    we will slay him'.
And therewith they all kneeled at once, both rich and
poor, and cried Arthur mercy because they had delayed him so long. And Arthur forgave them, and took the sword between both his hands, and offered it upon the altar where the Archbishop was, and so was he made knight of the best man there.
The above passage is from LeMmorte d'Arthur : the history of King Arthur and his noble knights of the Round Table, by Sir Thomas Malory, a book that was written and published between 1469-1470, during the reign of King Edward IV. Prior to this document, the exact origins of Arthurian legend are difficult to trace reliably before the twelfth century, when Geoffrey of Monmouth produced the History of the Kings of Britain, in which he devotes the last third of the book to King Arthur, with the first two thirds leading up to this climax. Although Monmouth's history contains passages which can be deemed 'mystical' in nature, especially in regards to Arthur, the preceding pages leading up to King Arthur's appearance, read as straight history as opposed to mythical tale.

Life of Arthur N. Prior, 1914-1969:
A Brief Overview
By
Per Hasle
Introduction
This document is a slightly extended Curriculum Vitae rather than a biography of Arthur Norman Prior - it is meant only to provide an overview of main stages and events during Prior's life. The best biographical description of Prior's life written so far is found in Anthony Kenny's memorial paper of Prior ( Kenny 1970 ). Kenny's description can be supplemented by two further investigations with different foci: (i) Prior's contributions to logic in general as well as the main stages of his development of tense logic are brilliantly explained in Jack Copeland's introduction to Copeland 1996 . Copeland's paper is primarily concerned with the period 1950-1969. (ii) Prior's early (ca. 1938-1950) philosophical and theological thought is investigated in [ Hasle 1997b ]. The latter paper also tries to explain how his later thought had roots in this early phase. Finally, the general exposition of Prior's 'Rediscovery of Tense Logic' given in Øhrstrøm and Hasle 1993 can be mentioned as a supplementary source.

http://www.museum.tv/archives/etv/A/htmlA/arthurbeatr/arthurbeatr.htm
ARTHUR, BEATRICE U.S. Actor Bea Arthur stands five-foot-nine-and-a-half inches tall in her stocking feet, and has a voice that one reviewer characterized as "deep as a pothole." Her formidable stature and booming vocal register made her an unlikely leading lady in an industry driven by a narrow regime of feminine beauty. But as character traits for Maude Finley, they proved to be the perfect foil for the sexist bravado of Archie Bunker in Norman Lear's 1970s sitcom, All In the Family , in which Arthur first appeared in the role. The spin-off series, Maude was created for her virtually overnight. As opinionated and caustic in her own way as Archie, Maude Finley was instead, a crusader for women's liberation, the woman in charge. And in the nascent gender consciousness of the 1970s, the Women's Movement's fictional spokeswoman had to be big and booming. Television viewers' love affair with the character Arthur created in Maude has resulted in a struggle with the actors' nemesistypecasting. She was a recognized actress on Broadway before making the move to television, appearing in Woody Allen's The Floating Lightbulb
