On The Beat
Norman Wisdom Comedy Film from 1962
Article inspired by an enquiry from Jed McGuire who is researching old film locations.
The article contains 69 small pictures. They will take a short time to arrive. Windsor has often been used as a location for filming, most famously perhaps in a Norman Wisdom film 'On The Beat' from 1962 where Norman is pursued by a vast army of policemen. The story line is that Pitkin, (Norman Wisdom), a car park attendant and dogsbody at a police station, longs to be a policeman like his father, but he is too short. But that does not stop him dressing in his father's uniform, leading to an opportunity to help a pretty American tourist and referee a boys' football match, because he has a whistle! It's the use of the whistle that leads to the chase by seemingly thousands of policemen through the streets of 'London'. Once captured he loses his job at the police station but has to be persuaded by the top brass to come back to work for them because he has an uncanny likeness to a big-time criminal that the police are desperate to catch.

Introduction
This pages lists the Glider and Tug crews which took part in Operation Freshman. I have attempted to specify the fate of each individual. Their resting place and other information is specified in more detail elsewhere on this site. Due to their being no survivors from either glider, it was extremely difficult for the authorities at the time to construct a picture of what exactly happened. Most of the information only emerged after the war finished in 1945, and War Crime investigations were carried out.
Glider Number One
Glider Number One (a Horsa DP349), and its tug (a Halifax 'A' Apple), took off at 17:45 from Wick. The tug was piloted by Squadron Leader A.B. Wilkinson. This plane released its glider and returned to Wick, landing at 03:00 the following morning. The crew of this Halifax were the only people to return from Operation Freshman. After the glider crashed at Fylgjesdal near Lysefjord, two of the survivors reached the Hovland Family's farm in Helleland. They told the Thedor and his son Trond Hovland that after being released by the tug, the glider apparently lost control and crashed somewhere into the mountains between Helleland and Bjerkreim. A later report stated that this glider had crashed east of Egersund, not far from Helleland Railway Station.

SEC SUES FIVE FORMER OFFICERS OF STYLING TECHNOLOGY CORPORATION FOR FINANCIAL FRAUD
STYLING'S FORMER CEO, CFO AND CHIEF ACCOUNTING OFFICER SETTLE ACTION
SEC SUES TWO FORMER ARTHUR ANDERSEN AUDITORS FOR FRAUD
On December 3, 2003, the Securities and Exchange Commission filed a civil injunctive action in the United States District Court for the District of Columbia, alleging that the principal executive officers of Styling Technology Corporation ("Styling"), including its former chairman and CEO, Sam Leopold, and its former CFO, Richard R. Ross, engaged in an extensive financial fraud between 1997 and 1999 by inflating the company's reported earnings in its filings with the Commission. The Commission's Complaint also alleges that two of the company's auditors engaged in the fraud by recklessly causing their accounting firm, Arthur Andersen LLP, to issue an unqualified audit report on Styling's 1998 year-end financial statements and by failing to object to false and misleading statements in Styling's 1999 first and second quarter reports. The Commission also alleges that Styling's fraudulent accounting practices continued through the first two quarters of 1999, when the company improperly booked millions of dollars of sales. In June 1999, it charges, Styling attempted to cover up its fraud by writing off $5.1 million of uncollectible accounts receivable and attributing the lost revenue to a strategic business decision.

Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm and Low Back Pain
Norman Engel, MS, DC, DABCO An aneurysm, by definition, is a sac formed by the dilatation of the wall of an artery, a vein or the heart. The chief signs of an arterial aneurysm are the formation of a pulsating tumor and often a bruit is heard over the swelling. Sometimes there are symptoms from pressure on contiguous parts. The aorta is the largest artery in the body. It arises from the left ventricle, ascending and bending over the heart, descending anteriorly to the thoracic and lumbar vertebrae. It splits at L-4 into the common iliacs, femorals, tibials, and dorsalis pedis arteries, supplying the lower extremities. The average diameter of aorta is 2.0-2.5 cm. More than 90 percent of abdominal aneurysms are associated with atherosclerosis and can cause leg pain (claudication), numbness or fatigue. An artery may be sclerosed (hardened) but if the lumenal diameter isn't altered, there is no aneurysm. Most abdominal aortic aneurysms do not produce symptoms, but some people feel a pulsating sensation in the abdomen. These silent (asymptomatic) aneurysms are often recognized by careful physical examination. Abdominal aortic aneurysm is most likely to occur in people older than 60 years, and it affects men more often than women.

Ivanhoe
A Romance
Sir Walter Scott
Introduction To Ivanhoe. - " 'Reverse the spell,' he cries,
'And let it fairly now suffice,
The gambol has been shown.' " Nothing can be more dangerous for the fame of a professor of the fine arts, than to permit (if he can possibly prevent it) the character of a mannerist to be attached to him, or that he should be supposed capable of success only in a particular and limited style. The public are, in general, very ready to adopt the opinion, that he who has pleased them in one peculiar mode of composition, is, by means of that very talent, rendered incapable of venturing upon other subjects. The effect of this disinclination, on the part of the public, towards the artificers of their pleasures, when they attempt to enlarge their means of amusing, may be seen in the censures usually passed by vulgar criticism upon actors or artists who venture to change the character of their efforts, that, in so doing, they may enlarge the scale of their art. There is some justice in this opinion, as there always is in such as attain general currency. It may often happen on the stage, that an actor, by possessing in a preeminent degree the external qualities necessary to give effect to comedy, may be deprived of the right to aspire to tragic excellence; and in painting or literary composition, an artist or poet may be master exclusively of modes of thought, and powers of expression, which confine him to a single course of subjects. But much more frequently the same capacity which carries a man to popularity in one department will obtain for him success in another, and that must be more particularly the case in literary composition, than either in acting or painting, because the adventurer in that department is not impeded in his exertions by any peculiarity of features, or conformation of person, proper for particular parts, or, by any peculiar mechanical habits of using the pencil, limited to a particular class of subjects.
