Per Hasle Arthur N. Prior and the Breakthrough of Temporal Logic Temporal logic is a philosophical and formal discipline concerned with the logical analysis of concepts of time, and their relations to other philosophical issues (e.g. determinism). However, temporal logic is not confined to being a logical approach to the study of time and temporal relations; it is in fact a fundamental conception of logic as such, significantly different from the timeless outlook of classical logic. The founder of symbolic temporal logic was Arthur Norman Prior (1914-69). His achievement was in part the rediscovery of the temporal logic of ancient and medieval philosophy, and in part the construction of a number of calculi for various logics of time. These calculi directly form the foundation for modern temporal logic. But while much effort is going into the development of ever more sophisticated and specialised temporal calculi, there is an increasing need for investigating the foundational ideas of such endeavours. In order to do this, it is also necessary to investigate and systematise the substantial material left behind by Prior (and now kept at the Bodleian Library in Oxford). In the 1950s and 1960s he laid out the foundation of temporal logic and showed that this discipline was intimately connected with modal logic. Since then, temporal and modal logic has grown into a mature discipline with many important applications in philosophy, computer science, and also linguistics. One characteristic of Prior's work is the point of view that logic should be related as closely as possible to intuitions embodied in everyday discourse. He also argued that temporal logic is fundamental for understanding and describing the world in which we live. An important contribution by Prior was the foundation of what is now known as hybrid logics. One simple form of a hybrid logic is a temporal logic in which a special sort of formulas called instant-propositions can be used to refer to specific instants in a model. Thereby further expressive power is obtained. Hybrid logics are closely related to the so-called description logics used for knowledge representation in computer science. The Green Howards Obituaries (Surname "P") Return to "Obituaries" page Norman Palmer Mr Benn Gunn writes: It is with great sadness and regret to record the passing of yet another old comrade and friend to many in the 1st battalion in Malaya, - 22358278 Pte Norman Palmer. Norman was taken ill just after Christmas 2001 and died of cancer on the 5th March this year. His funeral took place in hartlepool on Monday 11th March. Norman joined the 1st Battalion at Yong Peng in 1950. he stayed with 12 Pl 'D' Company as Pl Signaller for the whole of his National Service until 1952. He loved the Regiment and was always to be seen wearing its cap badge with great pride. Norman kept in contact with many chums he joined up with, including Brian Stenchoin whose elder daughter Anne was his God-daughter. His funeral was attended by many friends and comrades from the Regiment. This included his old Platoon Commander of 12 PI, the Rev Clive Artley. To his widow, Joyce, son Gary, grandchildren, sisters and brother, we offer our sincere condolences and sympathy. He served in the 4th Bn during the war until becoming a POW after Gazala. He was in two camps in Italy before finishing in Stalag IVB at Muhlberg on the River Elbe east of Leipzig.
