Karl Popper Born in Vienna, he studied mathematics, physics, and philosophy there. Although he disagreed with many tenets of the Vienna Circle, he was somehow associated with it and published his Logik der Forschung (later, Logic of Scientifc Discovery , 1959) in 1934; this book makes "falsification" the key concept and denounces "induction" or "confirmation", and it brought him a reputation. Then he accepted a position in Canterbury University College, New Zealand, and taught there from 1937 to 1945; he wrote two important books while he was in New Zealand: The Open Sciety and its Enemies (1945) and The Poverty of Historicism (1957) which cover social sciences and the philosophy of politics. Strong interests in these fields (he was sympathetic to Marxism when he was young but later he hated it as a form of holism) distinguish him from most other philosophers of science. In 1946 he moved to London School of Economics; and he contributed greatly to making it one of the world-renowned centers for philosophy of science. An important anthology, Conjectures and Refutations was published in 1963; this contains Popper's criticism of "dialectic", among others. In 1965, he and his followers criticized Thomas Kuhn in London, and the result is Lakatos & Musgrave (eds.)

Popper, Karl (Raimund) Austrian philosopher of science. His theory of falsificationism says that although scientific generalizations cannot be conclusively verified, they can be conclusively falsified by a counterinstance; therefore, science is not certain knowledge but a series of 'conjectures and refutations', approaching, though never reaching, a definitive truth. For Popper, psychoanalysis and Marxism are falsifiable and therefore unscientific.
One of the most widely read philosophers of the century, Popper's book The Open Society and its Enemies 1945 became a modern classic. In it he investigated the long history of attempts to formulate a theory of the state. Animated by a dislike of the views of Freud and Marx, Popper believed he could show that their hypotheses about hidden social and psychological processes were falsifiable.
His major work on the philosophy of science is The Logic of Scientific Discovery 1935. Other works include The Poverty of Historicism 1957 (about the philosophy of social science), Conjectures and Refutations 1963, and Objective Knowledge 1972.
Born and educated in Vienna, Popper served for a while as an assistant to the psychologist

In my opinion, the greatest scandal of philosophy is that, while all around us the world of nature perishes - and not the world of nature alone - philosophers continue to talk, sometimes cleverly and sometimes not, about the question of whether this world exists. They get involved in scholasticism, in linguistic puzzles such as, for example, whether or not there are differences between 'being' and 'existing'. T he philosophy of Karl Popper and Thomas Kuhn are very similar, (that truth is evolving and can never be absolutely known) and consequently, I find these fine philosophers both very good and very bad for the evolution of Human Knowledge.

An Introduction to the Philosophy of Science
Oxford University Press, 1989
Anthony O'Hear's An Introduction to the Philosophy of Science is an excellent book; but the purpose here is not a general review. Instead, there is one important point that will be considered, where O'Hear settles on what seems to be a decisive criticism of Karl Popper's theory of falsification as the key to scientific method. The first problem for a Popperian to consider, though, is whether he can really talk of a severe test [of a theory] without the use of inductive reasoning.... For a severe test is one which is unlikely on past evidence. Without using some sort of inductive assumptions, how can one move from past experience to calculations of present (or future) probability?.... All we have, on non-inductive grounds, are reports of past experience, and generalization from them is forbidden. [pp. 39-40] This account seems to involve a certain confusion. What are "inductive assumptions"? Are they principles that are presupposed by induction, or principles that are supposed to

Popper, Karl (1902-1994)

Austrian-born philosopher of science who defines science as a discipline founded on the creation of hypotheses that predict phenomena, preferably new ones, that can be tested. Popper's Principle holds that testability rather than truth should be the criterion for judging scientific truths. This principle views scientific progress in a different light than does Planck's Principle.

"What a monument of human smallness is this idea of the philosopher king. What a contrast between it and the simplicity of humaneness of Socrates, who warned the statesmen against the danger of being dazzled by his own power, excellence, and wisdom, and who tried to teach him what matters most - that we are all frail human beings. What a decline from this world of irony and reason and truthfulness down to Plato's kingdom of the sage whose magical powers raise him high above ordinary men; although not quite high enough to forgo the use of lies, or to neglect the sorry trade of every shaman - the selling of spells, of breeding spells, in exchange for power over his fellow-men."
