PLOTINUS
The bonds of human fate are loosed for you, and, strong of heart, you beat your eager way from out the roaring tumult of this fleshly life to the shores of that wave-washed coast, free from the thronging of the guilty, thence to take the grateful path of the sinless soul. THE DELPHIC ORACLE
Creativity and decadence were mingled in a mixture of anticipation and apprehension in Alexandria during the second and third centuries of this era. Philosophers and theologians taught and fought over every conceivable metaphysical and practical issue, at once supporting a freedom of mind seldom known in recorded history while also offering fantastic forms of escape from the radical parameters of the human condition. Magicians and monks, emperors and entrepreneurs flooded Alexandria's streets and lecture halls with promises and predictions. Some preached the imminent end of the world, and indeed the doom of the Roman imperium was already in evidence. Others offered little more than imported potions to satisfy the hedonistic pursuits of those who sought surcease from the world's endless, weary round. Not all, however, were caught up in the contest between fatalism and salvationism. A few men and women of noble mind and compassionate heart sought out the inner meaning of forces and events and translated their lasting discoveries into words and deeds based on ethical understanding and metaphysical awareness. About the Author
Plotinus is primarily remembered for his teachings, which were collected by Porphyry into a volume called the Enneads . This work gives Plotinus's accounts of the religions and cults of his age. He was interested in the occult but only in a detached and speculative way. He was indifferent to traditional paganism but critical of the Gnostic Christian heretics who preached the mystical dualism of the divine, which he regarded as antiphilosophical, un-Greek, and emotional superstition. His own religious beliefs inclined toward the idea that one could achieve a spiritual union with the good (understood as the Platonic idea of a perfect realm of the ideal) through philosophic reflection. Plotinus's considerable influence on Christianity came primarily through figures such as Saint Augustine (354-430) and Dionysius, the Pseudo-Areopagite (c. 500). After contracting what modern authorities have classified as a type of disfiguring tuberculosis or leprosy, Plotinus retired to a country villa belonging to a friend. He died there in 270.

Letters on Literature
by Andrew Lang Terms Contents Dedication Preface ... Appendix II PLOTINUS
Plotinus
A.D. 200-262) To the Lady Violet Lebas.
Dear Lady Violet,You are discursive and desultory enough, as a reader, to have pleased even the late Lord Iddesleigh. It was "Aucassin and Nicolette" only a month ago, and to-day you have been reading Lord Lytton's "Strange Story," I am sure, for you want information about Plotinus! He was born (about A.D. 200) in Wolf- town (Lycopolis), in Egypt, the town, you know, where the natives might not eat wolves, poor fellows, just as the people of Thebes might not eat sheep. Probably this prohibition caused Plotinus no regret, for he was a consistent vegetarian. However, we are advancing too rapidly, and we must discuss Plotinus more in order. His name is very dear to mystic novelists, like the author of "Zanoni." They always describe their favourite hero as "deep in Plotinus or Iamblichus," and I venture to think that nearly represents the depth of their own explorations. We do not know exactly when Plotinus was born. Like many ladies he used to wrap up his age in a mystery, observing that these petty details about the body (a mere husk of flesh binding the soul) were of no importance. He was not weaned till he was eight years old, a singular circumstance. Having a turn for philosophy, he attended the schools of Alexandria, concerning which Kingsley's "Hypatia" is the most accessible authority. All these anecdotes, I should have said, we learn from Porphyry, the Tyrian, who was a kind of Boswell to Plotinus. The philosopher himself often reminds me of Dr. Johnson, especially as Dr. Johnson is described by Mr. Carlyle. Just as the good doctor was a sound Churchman in the beginning of the age of new ideas, so Plotinus was a sound pagan in the beginning of the triumph of Christianity.
