Peirce, Charles Sanders (1839-1914) American scientist, logician, and founder of American pragmatism After spending a year with the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey, Peirce graduated from Harvard in chemistry in 1863 and rejoined the Survey to make observations of lunar occultations, and continued with astronomical work until 1878. In connection with a survey aiming to determine more precisely the Earth's ellipticity, Peirce developed a method of fixing the length of the metre in terms of a wavelength of light, gaining him international recognition. The Survey however, was dissatisfied with his work for them and Peirce resigned in 1891, never enjoying regular employment for the remainder of his life. Peirce however went on to gain a formidable reputation in logic, for which he is most renowned, and made significant contributions in a stunningly wide range of sciences and technology. He also gave occasional lectures in philosophy at John Hopkins University and frequently addressed the National Academy of Sciences and other learned institutions. do something.

Peirce was a difficult man, widely perceived as an immoral libertine, prone to paranoia and wild mood swings, and possessing an assessment of his own intellectual powers which may have been accurate but which was sometimes accompanied by contempt for the capacities of those of lesser talents. In 1884, when confident of obtaining tenure at Johns Hopkins, information about his irregular life-style, together with suspicion of his unorthodox religious beliefs, led to his being removed from his post. From then until his death, it was understood that he could expect no orthodox academic employment: he lived precariously with his second wife in north-eastern Pennsylvania, writing extensively and giving a few important series of lectures arranged by his friend William James. He never completed the canonical statement of his philosophical position that he sought, but he published extensively and left hundreds of thousands of manuscripts; his work is gradually becoming more readily available. Peirce, Charles Sanders Pronunciation Key Peirce, Charles Sanders , American philosopher and polymath, b. Cambridge, Mass., grad. Harvard, 1859; son of Benjamin Peirce . Except for occasional lectures he renounced the regimen of academic life and was in government service with the Geodetic Survey for many years. Regarding logic as the beginning of all philosophical study, Peirce felt that the meaning of an idea was to be found in an examination of the consequences to which the idea would lead. This principle was published in 1878 in Popular Science Monthly, using the term pragmatism , which was later employed, with acknowledgment, by his friend William James A major thinker in a number of fields, Peirce is also recognized as the originator of the modern form of semiotics and the first American experimental psychologist. His influence is clearly seen in the works of Josiah

50. Patrick BENAZET - Présentation De Charles Sanders Peirce

http://patrick-benazet.chez.tiscali.fr/semiocom/peirce.htm

Select: Introduction: Pragmatism, Instrumentalism Charles Sanders Peirce William James AMERICAN PRAGMATISM - 1 INTRODUCTION Pragmatism: Pragmatism is a philosophical movement, developed in the United States, which holds that both the meaning and the truth of any idea is a function of its practical outcome. Fundamental to pragmatism is a strong antiabsolutism: the conviction that all principles are to be regarded as working hypotheses rather than as metaphysically binding axioms. A modern expression of empiricism, pragmatism was highly influential in America in the first quarter of the 20th century. Pragmatism has tended to criticize traditional philosophical outlooks in the light of scientific and social developments.

Peirce’s Life Charles Sanders Peirce was born September 10th, 1839, in Cambridge, MA to Benjamin Peirce, the brilliant Harvard mathematician and astronomer, and Sarah Hunt Mills, the daughter of Senator Elijah Hunt Mills. Peirce led a privileged early life; parental indulgences meant his father refused to discipline his children for fear of suppressing their individuality. Further, the academic and intellectual climate of the family home meant intellectual dignitaries were frequent visitors to the Peirce household. These visitors included mathematicians and men of science, poets, lawyers and politicians. This environment saw young Charles Peirce’s precocious intellect readily indulged. Peirce was the second of five children and four talented brothers, one of whom, James Mills Peirce (his elder brother), followed their father to a mathematics professorship at Harvard. Another brother, Herbert Henry Davis Peirce, carved out a distinguished career in the Foreign Service whilst Peirce’s youngest brother, Benjamin Mills Peirce, showed promise as an engineer but died young. The talent of the Peirce brothers, and particularly Charles, stems in large part from the colossal intellect and influence of their father. Benjamin Peirce was instrumental in the development of American Sciences in the 19th Century through his own intellectual achievements and by lobbying Washington for funds. He was influential in the creation of Harvard’s Lawrence Scientific School and in the foundation of a National Academy of the Sciences. A further role, which was to prove important in Charles Peirce’s life, was Peirce Senior’s influential position in the U.S Coastal and Geodetic Survey from 1852 until his death in 1880. Benjamin Peirce provided a mighty role model, guiding the prodigious development of the young Peirce’s intellect through heuristic teaching. This gave Peirce a love of science and commitment to rigorous inquiry from a young age.

This is an incompletely revised version of the original, which is being made available for purposes of critical feedback while the revision is still in process. It will in due time be submitted to the place of original publication as a revision to be substituted for the original whenever the occasion to update it arises. Paragraph numbers have been added to this version for purposes of scholarly reference. Peirce was extraordinarily competent and accomplished in the sciences generally, in the manner of a true polymathnot a mere dilettante, he was solidly established as a working scientisthe nevertheless always regarded himself as primarily a logician, though in a far broader sense of the word "logic" than it commonly carried then or carries now. Indeed, it was his ambition from early on to ground and expand logicdeductive, inductive, and abductive (that is, the logic of hypothesis)on a fundamentally new basis, namely, within the framework of a general theory of signs and representation (i.e. a semiotic), and he eventually came to the conclusion that logic in what he called "the broad sense" is that framework, the unified theory of deduction, induction, and abduction being best differentiated within it as "critical logic." Unfortunately, much of his best work on the general theory is still available only in manuscript form and copies thereof. This material is becoming increasingly available, though at a slow pace, as a new edition of his philosophical work (projected as some 30 volumes of 600 pages each) continues to be published across the coming years (five volumes of which have appeared thus far), and there is some hope that much of it can be made available more rapidly through the use of the new computer-based communications technologies. Peirce also left a substantial corpus of scientific work, including a book in astronomy, and a five volume collection of his work in mathematics, which contains much material of the first importance for semiotic, appeared in 1976.

Inicio Buscador Recomendar sitio

In recent decades, his thought has enjoyed renewed appreciation. At present, he is widely regarded as an innovator in many fields, especially the methodology of research and the philosophy of science Charles Sanders Peirce was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts , the son of Sarah and Benjamin Peirce . His father was a professor of astronomy and mathematics at Harvard University . Though the young Peirce received a graduate degree in chemistry from Harvard, he never succeeded in obtaining a tenured academic position. Peirce's academic ambitions were frustrated by his difficult (perhaps manic-depressive ) personality and by the scandal surrounding his divorce from Harriet Melusina Fay and his marriage to Juliette Froissy which immediately followed. He made a career as a scientist for the United States Coast Survey ( ), working especially in

Max H. Fisch in Sebeok, The Play of Musement
Born 10 September 1839; died 19 April 1914
Attended Harvard and the Lawrence Scientific School (received degree in Chemistry in 1863)
Founder of pragmatism- new methods and ways of treating truth and meaning.
Derived that human beliefs are originated through "habits of action," and truth defined as inquiry.
Developed pragmatic theory that an innate correlation is present between meaning and action, where the meaning or truth of an idea is to be found in its consequences or "conceivable sensible effects" in human experience ("…our conception of the effects is the whole of our conception of the object.")
Therefore, truth or meaning is dependent on the subject’s conception or paradigm on an idea based on his experiences, making it ever changing; "that reality, as well as human knowledge of it, is constantly evolving, as is morality. What is good or evil… is dependent on its practical outcome… on its effects on human behavior."(grolier 1995)
Believed that "all beliefs, whether scientific of religious, were fallible and criticizable."
