Clement died April 20, 1314. The cardinals met at Carpentras and then at Lyons, and after an interregnum of twenty seven months elected John XXII., 1316–1334, to the papal throne. He was then seventy-two, and cardinal-bishop of Porto. Said to be the son of a cobbler of Cahors, short of stature, c, John was, upon the whole, the most conspicuous figure among the popes of the fourteenth century, though not the most able or worthy one. He was a man of restless disposition, and kept the papal court in constant commotion. The Vatican Archives preserve 59 volumes of his bulls and other writings. He had been a tutor in the house of Anjou, and carried the preceptorial method into his papal utterances. It was his ambition to be a theologian as well as pope. He solemnly promised the Italian faction in the curia never to mount an ass except to start on the road to Rome. But he never left Avignon. His devotion to France was shown at the very beginning of his reign in the appointment of eight cardinals, of whom seven were Frenchmen. The four notable features of John’s pontificate are his quarrel with the German emperor, Lewis the Bavarian, his condemnation of the rigid party of the Franciscans, his own doctrinal heresy, and his cupidity for gold.

Ramon Llull (1232-1316)
Johnston, Mark D.
The spiritual logic of Ramon Llull. - Oxford : Clarendon Press, 1987.
Ramon Llull was born on the island of Majorca, probably in 1232. He was the only child of a wealthy French-descended merchant from Barcelona who settled on Majorca with James I of Aragon after the king conquered the island from the Moors in 1229. Llull was raised and educated at Court during the latter part of his early years, about which little is known. He was eventually appointed seneschal to the young James II of Majorca, who received the island from his father in 1253. Traditional accounts have left colourful stories about Llull's gay life at court, especially his amorous exploits and cultivation of the troubadour lyric. He married one Blanca Picany in 1257, and had two children. Sometime in 1263 or 1264, however, Llull underwent a profound religious conversion, induced by repeated visions of Christ crucified. At this time Llull is said to have conceived the three great goals of his life's work as a missionary and procelyte; these form the indispensable context for any understanding of his doctrines and activities. They were: (1) the founding of schools to teach missionaries the oriental languages, (2) the writing of a book to prove Christian doctrine, and (3) the propagation of the Faith among the infidels. Inspired by a Franciscan sermon, Llull renounced his life at court, sold all his goods, and went on pilgrimages to Rocamadour, Compostela, and other shrines.

More than simply rehearsing the details of the rise of a money economy in medieval Europe, Kaye focuses on such disruptions as the repeated revaluations of French coinage beginning with Philip IV as revealed in French royal ordonnances Chapters 2 through 5 detail the ways in which scholastic authors attempted to make sense of the new monetized economy in their economic theory. In chapter 2, Kaye analyzes one key source for medieval economic theory, Aristotle’s treatment of money and exchange in the

The abuse of captives reported recently in Iraq is nothing new. It has been repeated in every generation and every nation over millennia. What is less familiar is an increasing knowledge of why people do such things. So, for example, nothing could have been more "pure" than the motives of some (but not all) of the inquisitors appointed by the papacy centuries ago. They acted to rescue the Church from dreadful contamination, and their victims from even worse tortures in hell.
    The Inquisition: An Introduction
by David Burr, Fordham University, USA W hen medieval people used the word "inquisition" they were referring to a judicial technique, not an organization. There was , in fact, no such thing as "the Inquisition" in the sense of an impersonal organization with a chain of command. Instead there were "inquisitors of heretical depravity", individuals assigned by the Pope to inquire into heresy in specific areas. They were called such because they applied a judicial technique known as inquisitio , which can be translated as "inquiry" or "inquest."
