Article adapted from the Dan Graves' book, Scientists of Faith The first to present his case seems right until another comes forward and questions him. Proverbs 18:17. The power of the creationist view can be better seen at the very outset of Western science in the person of John Philoponus. Aristotle (384-322 B.C.), the ancient Greek philosopher and scientist whose views still reverberate today, did more than perhaps any other thinker to shape pre-Christian science. But his theories, while innovative for his day, often combined brilliant insights with a good deal of nonsense-nonsense that opposed several fundamental tenets of first Judaism and then Christianity. Significantly, Aristotle's most serious critic in the first seven hundred years was John Philoponus, an Alexandrian Christian. In response to Aristotalian error, Philoponus forged a sustained attack against Aristotle's chief proponent during the seventh century A.D., a Greek philosopher named Simplicius. Fortunately for modern science, Simplicius often responded to those attacks with long quotations from Philoponus, inadvertantly preserving his opponent's work for posterity. Philoponus's application of Christian theology to physics prefigured a new era in science. The Alexandrian scholar was the first to combine scientific cosmology (the study of the nature of the universe) with monotheism and the Christian doctrine of creation. In doing so, Philoponus anticipated not only the findings but also the methods of modern science. He controlled his observations in the manner of genuine research, although it is not certain he ever progressed beyond thought experiments-that is, experiments carefully thought out, but not actually performed.

The University of Massachusetts
It's a good thing Dante died in 1321; if not, the bull Cum inter nonullos , promulgated by John XXII in 1323, might very well have killed himif not from the sheer shock of the assertion of "Peter" that Christ and the apostles had material possessions, then at the hands of the inquisition that made consent to that assertion a condition of orthodoxy. Though the bull itself is beyond the pale, as it were, of the Commedia , the events leading up to Cum inter nonullos are the indispensable context for a certain strand of discourse in the poema strand that connects poverty and apocalypse, and consequently also links Dante to the polemics of the Franciscan order in the first decades of the fourteenth century. I am exploring these connections, and focusing specifically on three issues: the influence on Dante of the Spiritual Franciscan's "patron saint," Peter John Olivi, and the condemnation of the Monarchia ; the ramifications for Dante of the vernacular and eventually heretical milieu in which Olivi's works were diffused; and the poetic repercussions of these links on the Commedia.

PETRUS IOHANNIS OLIVI: Selections from the Apocalypse Commentary
Petrus Iohannis Olivi was one of the brightest scholars of his generation, and one of the most troublesome. He was blessed or cursed with an inquiring , original mind which frequently led him to question what those around him considered obvious, and he had a greater tolerance for ambiguity than most of his contemporaries. Born in 1247 or 1248, Olivi joined the Franciscan Order at the age of twelve and was eventually sent to study in Paris; yet questions about his orthodoxy prevented him from becoming a master. He was censured in 1283 and removed from his teaching post for a while, but in 1287 he was rehabilitated and made lector at the Franciscan house in Florence, a prestigious position. Olivi 's two years there did a great deal to cement relations between Italian and southern French reformers within the Franciscan Order, an alliance that would spell trouble for leaders in the early fourteenth century. In 1289 Olivi was soon sent back to his native southern France. He spent his remaining years there as lector in Franciscan houses at Montpellier and Narbonne. When he died in 1298 a thriving Olivi cult sprang up around his grave at Narbonne. Pilgrims to it included not only laity but clergy as well, even cardinals. For a while it seemed that he might become a saint, but instead his work was posthumously censured from 1318 on and his body quietly disposed of, we know not where.

THOMISTS AND ANTI-THOMISTS
Sources . Besides the works of the philosophers to be mentioned under this head, we possess as valuable sources of information Denifle's Chartularium Universitatis Parisiensis and articles by Denifle, Ehrle, and others in the and in the Roland of Cremona, Richard Fitzacre , and Robert Kilwardby . It was owing to the influence of Kilwardby, who was archbishop of Canterbury, that the masters of the university of Oxford carried their opposition to Thomism so far as to censure as dangerous the denial of the rationes seminales and the affirmation of the unity of the substantial form in man. This was in 1277. In the following year, however, all opposition on the part of the Dominicans ceased, and in a general chapter of the order, held at Milan in that year, those who had opposed the teaching of St. Thomas in England were censured. The Franciscans, jealous for the reputation of the great teachers of their order, Alexander of Hales and St. Bonaventure, made common cause with those who objected to the doctrine of unity of substantial forms and to the denial of the rationes seminales doctrines which, as we have seen, were part of the Franciscan tradition.
